Marriage and the Economy

Marriage and the Economy

Marriage and the Economy explores how marriage influences the monetized economy as well as the household economy. Marriage institutions are to the household economy what business institutions are to the monetized economy, and marital status is clearly related to the household economy. Marriage also influences the economy as conventionally measured via its impact on labor supply, workers' productivity, savings, consumption, and government programs such as welfare programs and social security. The macro-economic analyses presented here are based on the micro-economic foundations of cost/benefit analysis, game theory, and market analysis. Micro-economic analysis of marriage, divorce, and behavior within marriages are investigated by a number of specialists in various areas of economics. Western values and laws have been very successful at transforming the way the world does business, but its success at maintaining individual commitments to family values is less impressive.

The original book published with the IZA, this work presents and analyzes the work of one of the most important economists of the 20th century - Jacob Mincer. Mincer's work has had a lasting influence on contemporary labor economics in both theoretical and methodological terms. Mincer played a central role in shaping contemporary labor economics, not the least by largely determining its research agenda. His work in the 1960s and 70s on the determinants of individual earnings, notably human capital, and on labor force supply, particularly female participation, have had an enormous impact on the way others have approached labor economics. This book presents a systematic analysis of his extensive published work, emphasising its continuity as a lifetime research program that has made a lasting influence on modern labor economics.

BY SHOSHANA GROSSBARD In 2004, the Society of Labor Economists announced its ?rst Award for Lifetime Achievement in Labor Economics. Jacob Mincer and Gary Becker were the - recipients. The award was then renamed the Jacob Mincer Award. Two years earlier, Mincer was the ?rst to win the IZA Award in Labor Economics. These awards recognize Mincer’s primary role in shaping labor economics, but they only hint at the breadth of his reputation and accomplishments: he is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and has been appointed a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the Econometric Society, as well as a distinguished Fellow of the American Economic Association. Mincer is one of the principal architects of Modern Labor Economics (MLE), a premier application of micro-economics in the spirit of Chicago’s positive e- nomics. There are typically three steps to such application: (1) a theoretical model is developed or borrowed, leading to testable implications; (2) empirical work is p- formed; and (3) the ?ndings are analyzed in light of the theoretical analysis. All of Mincer’s work has followed those steps, even when this was a rare occurrence. When he started, in the mid 1950s, labor economics was a sub-?eld of institutional e- nomics. Labor economics is now a major ?eld of economics. As a result of his work and that of other pioneers, MLE became an example for other applications of e- nomic models.

Studies in Labor Supply, the second volume of Jacob Mincer's essays to be published in this series, focuses on the family context of labor supply especially that of women. Special attention is devoted to wage incentives and wage consequences of labor supply and to long term trends in the female labor force, a major social phenomenon of the twentieth century.Jacob Mincer's research reveals a rare combination of imaginative empirical analysis guided by a command of theory. His work and professional style have set the standard for empirical economics. This is especially true of his work on the labor force participation of married women. This is the second of two volumes containing carefully edited selections of Professor Mincer's most important essays, some of which are published here for the first time. Introductions to each volume provide overviews of the interconnections of the topics discussed, their conceptual coherence and empirical significance. Studies in Human Capital, the first volume of Professor Mincer's essays, is also available as part of this series.

Great Science, Fabulous Science, And Voodoo Science: An Introduction To The Use And Misuse Of Data
Science is often portrayed as following a very clearly defined set of procedures: start with a hypothesis, do an experiment and, based on the results, reject the hypothesis or adopt it as a working assumption. The actual process, however, is rarely so straightforward. In addition, the stories as usually told or recorded may differ from what really happened. This text will present some famous, some lesser known, and some infamous experiments, mainly in the physical sciences but also in several other fields, selected to illustrate intellectual tours de force, cases of error, cases of fraud, and the murky boundaries between them. These case studies compare how we imagine (perhaps naively) that conclusions are drawn from data with what is actually done in practice. Along the way, issues such as the discarding of 'faulty data', theoretical bias, and probabilistic tools for hypothesis acceptance and rejection will be discussed. The book also discuss how scientific ideas are evaluated by the media, in the courtroom, and in government.
