There is something about the morning. Joy comes in the morning. Weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning. No one really knows when his or her morning will comebut it does come because there is something about the morning...When you have a dream and it stays with you all through the night into the morningand you can still remember the beginning and end of the dream, then it's no longer just a dream it's a revelation from God and you must make sure you ask for its meaning because it's very important".
The Five Books of Moses Lapinsky

The Five Books of Moses Lapinsky

In 2003, a mild-mannered historian named Moses Lapinsky jots down notes for a biography. It is to tell the tale of his father Sonny, a famous Jewish- Canadian boxer. As Moses buries himself in his research, he is transported back in time to the pivotal events of his father's life. So begins the first of the five sections of the novel, each narrated by a different third person. Crammed with humour, sorrow, folly, bravery and the richness of the everyday, Tulchinsky traces the remarkable fortunes of generations of the Lapinsky family, bringing life to the character of an entire community. August 1933: a sweltering Toronto night. At Christie Pits Park, during the ninth inning of an amateur-league softball game, four youths unfurl a white sheet emblazoned with a large black Swastika, lift their arms and shout, "Heil Hitler!" Within seconds, a group of Jewish youths charge in a struggle to capture the flag, setting off a four-hour race riot (the largest ever to occur, before or since, in Toronto), involving fifteen thousand people and injuring hundreds. The riot at Christie Pits Park was the culmination of weeks of political and racial tension.Tulchinsky has re-created this and other defining historical moments in vivid detail, taking us inside the life of one immigrant Jewish family. We trace the fortunes of the Lapinskys--in particular the four sons--from the pivotal moment of the riots, through the years of the Great Depression, the rise of fascism and all its attendant social tensions, World War II, into the post-war era that began to emerge in the early 1950s. A stunning, engaging and moving fictional treatment of a defining moment for a family, a city, a nation and a continent struggling with ideas of freedom, tolerance and identity in a world broken by war.

The story of Exodus and the rescue of the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt is one of the greatest stories in the Old Testament. In this brilliantly illustrated picture book, the distinguished artist, Brian Wildsmith, captures all the incidents of this powerful and dramatic tale: Moses in the bulrushes, the burning bush, the plagues that afflict Egypt, the Passover, the crossing of the Red Sea, the journey through the desert, the Ten Commandments, and finally the arrival in the Promised Land. Brian Wildsmith brings this ancient story to life with stunning pictures of Ancient Egypt and the vast expanses of the wilderness and mountains.

An unprecedented portrait of Moses's inner world and perplexing character, by a distinguished biblical scholar No figure looms larger in Jewish culture than Moses, and few have stories more enigmatic. Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg, acclaimed for her many books on Jewish thought, turns her attention to Moses in this remarkably rich, evocative book. Drawing on a broad range of sources—literary as well as psychoanalytic, a wealth of classical Jewish texts alongside George Eliot, W. G. Sebald, and Werner Herzog—Zornberg offers a vivid and original portrait of the biblical Moses. Moses's vexing personality, his uncertain origins, and his turbulent relations with his own people are acutely explored by Zornberg, who sees this story, told and retold, as crucial not only to the biblical past but also to the future of Jewish history.

Lawgiver and liberator. Seer and prophet. The only human permitted to converse with God "face-to-face." Moses is the most commanding presence in the Old Testament. Yet as Jonathan Kirsch shows in this brilliant, stunningly original volume, Moses was also an enigmatic and mysterious figure--at once a good shepherd and a ruthless warrior, a spiritual leader and a magician, a lawgiver who broke his own laws, God's chosen friend and hounded victim. Now, in Moses: A Life, Kirsch accomplishes the wondrous feat of revealing the real Moses, a strikingly modern figure who steps out from behind the facade of Sunday school lessons and movie matinees. Drawing on the biblical text and a treasury of both scholarship and storytelling, Kirsch examines all that is known and all that has been imagined of Moses. In these vivid pages, we see the marvels and mysteries of Moses's life in a new light--his rescue in infancy and adoption by an Egyptian princess; his reluctant assumption of the role of liberator; his struggles to wrest his people from the pharaoh's dominion; his desperate vigil on Mount Sinai. Here too is the darker, more ominous Moses--the sorcerer, the husband of a pagan woman, the military commander who cold-bloodedly ordered the slaying of innocent people; the beloved of God whom God sought twice to murder. Jonathan Kirsch brings both prodigious knowledge and a keen imagination to one of the most compelling stories of the Bible, and the results are fascinating. A figure of mystery, passion, and contradiction, Moses emerges from this book very much a hero for our time.

During the time of Moses a fundamental change in people's consciousness took place. Moses himself still had the ancient faculty of natural clairvoyance while a new, intellectual faculty was awakening.Bock describes the symbols and myths of the Osiris-Isis mysteries, the Messianic hopes concerning the young sun-Pharaoh, Akhenaton, and the spiritual twilight of the Egyptian mysteries that led Moses to leave Egypt for the desert.Bock interprets the imagery of the Bible in detail: the unconsumed burning bush, the miracles of staff and spring, the revelation on the Mount Sinai. He finds an inner history running parallel to the outer, linking far past and distant future. In its trials and temptations, the history of this people follows the same stages and crises as the life of Jesus of Nazareth.Emil Bock brings his wide reading of the occult and mythological traditions to bear on one of the central Old Testament texts.

You've longed for something solid. You're tired of the same worldly advice to leaders. It's time to rediscover Moses. Despite his amazing life and powerful experiences with God, he was called "the most humble man on the face of the earth." Humble, obedient, faithful vessels like Moses - what could God do with you today? Could this book be your burning bush? Our world needs men like Moses: -Men who will part the Red Sea so God's people can move forward.-Men who will confront Pharaoh with mighty displays of God's power.-Men who will cast down golden cows and other idols.-Men who will pay the price to climb the mountain, fast, and hear from God-Men who will be true pastors and leaders.Tragically, Wikipedia includes William Shakespeare and Thomas Jefferson among the "Ten most influential people in history," but not Moses. Time Magazine doesn't even include Moses among the "100 Most Significant Figures in History" That may help explain where we are today. This book is not a commentary, but an exegetical study of Moses' "autobiography," the five books we believe he authored. Beginning at the burning bush, we follow him to his death on Mount Nebo. Moses will come alive to you But it's not just an historical study - each step of the way is applied to your life today. This book is full of guidance for leaders - both in and outside the church.
