Einführung in das Quartär

Einführung in das Quartär

Karl N. Thome

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH Co. K

Das Wissen über das Eiszeitalter verändert sich rasch. Neue Hinweise liefern u.a.

Geometrical Themes Inspired by the N-body Problem

Geometrical Themes Inspired by the N-body Problem

Springer International Publishing AG

Presenting a selection of recent developments in geometrical problems inspired by the N-body problem, these lecture notes offer a variety of approaches to study them, ranging from variational to dynamical, while developing new insights, making geometrical and topological detours, and providing historical references. A. Guillot’s notes aim to describe differential equations in the complex domain, motivated by the evolution of N particles moving on the plane subject to the influence of a magnetic field. Guillot studies such differential equations using different geometric structures on complex curves (in the sense of W. Thurston) in order to find isochronicity conditions. R. Montgomery’s notes deal with a version of the planar Newtonian three-body equation. Namely, he investigates the problem of whether every free homotopy class is realized by a periodic geodesic. The solution involves geometry, dynamical systems, and the McGehee blow-up.A novelty of the approach is the use of energy-balance in order to motivate the McGehee transformation. A. Pedroza’s notes provide a brief introduction to Lagrangian Floer homology and its relation to the solution of the Arnol’d conjecture on the minimal number of non-degenerate fixed points of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism.
Themes in Roman Satire

Themes in Roman Satire

N. Rudd

Bristol Classical Press

nidottu
This text sets out to illuminate all the central themes of Roman satire. It offers a synchronic assessment of different aspects of the work of Lucilius, Horace, Persius and Juvenal: their aims; their styles; and their views on freedom of speech, class patronage, Greeks and sex. In addition it contains a sympathetic presentation in English of the poetry of Lucilius.
Themes in Neoplatonic and Aristotelian Logic

Themes in Neoplatonic and Aristotelian Logic

John N. Martin

Were the most serious philosophers of the millennium 200 A.D. to 1200 A.D. just confused mystics? This book shows otherwise. John Martin rehabilitates Neoplatonism, founded by Plotinus and brought into Christianity by St. Augustine. The Neoplatonists devise ranking predicates like good, excellent, perfect to divide the Chain of Being, and use the predicate intensifier hyper so that it becomes a valid logical argument to reason from God is not (merely) good to God is hyper-good. In this way the relational facts underlying reality find expression in Aristotle's subject-predicate statements, and the Platonic tradition proves able to subsume Aristotle's logic while at the same time rejecting his metaphysics. In the Middle Ages when Aristotle's larger philosophy was recovered and joined again to the Neoplatonic tradition which was never lost, Neoplatonic logic lived along side Aristotle's metaphysics in a sometime confusing and unsettled way. Showing Neoplatonism to be significantly richer in its logical and philosophical ideas than it is usually given credit for, this book will be of interest not just to historians of logic, but to philosophers, logicians, linguists, and theologians.

Introduction to Biblical Themes in Cultural Context presents to students a number of prominent theological themes in the Bible, such as sin, redemption, humanity, and divine presence in the world. Introduction to Biblical Themes in Cultural Context presents to students a number of prominent theological themes in the Bible, such as sin, redemption, humanity, and divine presence in the world. It shows how, in the light of a social science understanding of the ancient societies that produced the biblical documents, those themes were plausible and relevant to those societies. Armed with this understanding, students are then equipped to appreciate how these biblical themes came to massively shape today's Western civilization. The text is divided into two parts that address the development and elaboration of these biblical themes in the Old Testament and New Testament, respectively. In Part I, four distinct units cover these themes during the conception, birth, maturity, and collapse of the Nation of Israel. In Part II, two units trace the further development of the themes in the four gospels and in the "New Era" of Jesus' resurrection, the writings of the Apostle Paul, and the Book of Revelation.Introduction to Biblical Themes in Cultural Context is an ideal textbook for undergraduate and graduate-level courses in religion and biblical studies.
The Anatomy of Theme in Beethoven's Piano Sonatas

The Anatomy of Theme in Beethoven's Piano Sonatas

Dmitri N. Smirnov

"It is impossible to fully understand any composition that belongs to any epoch, either before or after Beethoven, if you do not proceed from Beethoven. ...] Only at the level that form had reached in the music of Beethoven could this form ...] reveal something which would unite the music before Beethoven with the music of today." This quote from Philip Herschkowitz (student of Alban Berg and Anton Webern and teacher of Dmitri Smirnov) forms the basis of Smirnov's study "The anatomy of theme in Beethoven's piano sonatas", Smirnov, himself a composer and musicologist from Russia, presents a "strong and clear definition" of the subject term based on this outdated and reserved for lovers of Beethoven, which in his opinion has so far been characterized by misunderstandings and contradictions. As with Berg, Webern and Herschkowitz, Smirnov's analytical methodology is based on Schoenberg. (Jan Wedekind ) This book investigates the anatomy of Theme-the foremost part of a musical organism, aiming to set out the principles of a strong and clear definition of this basic music term, and also to develop a detailed theory of its wider implications. It presents examination of Beethoven's piano sonatas based on the post-Webernian approach to musical form and in particular on the principles of the teaching of Philip Herschkowitz (1906-1989), one of the most important pupils of Alban Berg and Anton Webern. It includes a lot of references to Herschkowitz's works as well as a translation of his important essay to this particular subject: "Webern and His Teaching". It also uses some new methods of analysis, and includes a complete catalog of every theme found within the sonatas, with classification of more than 500 themes according to their intervallic typology.
