In her late twenties with no romantic prospects Kate wonders if love and marriage have passed her by. Raised in a discordant home she struggles with emotional issues, her ego remaining reasonably intact only through a tender relationship with her father. Scarred by her parents' loveless marriage she is extremely wary of commitment, and more than a little particular about the men she dates. With fond memories of a childhood comrade she can't help wondering about the adult Freddie: who he has become, where he is, and if the man exists who possesses his caliber of character. Then she meets Frank and is soon convinced she has found her soul-mate. Frank, however, refuses to reveal any elements of his past, and Kate, fearing he may be hiding something sinister, sets out to discover the reason for his mysterious reticence.

Mexicans in San José

Since the founding of California's El Pueblo de San Jos de Guadalupe in 1777, people of Mexican ancestry have contributed to make San Jos a rich cultural, political, and economic epicenter. Mexican miners who worked in the local mines helped San Jos become one of the top mercury producers in the world. In the 20th century, Mexicans labored in the Valley of Heart's Delight, as the Santa Clara Valley region was called, picking, canning, drying, and packaging fruits and vegetables for America's dinner table. They paid homage to their cultural heritage as they formed ballet folkl rico groups, established mariachi bands, painted murals, and wrote literature. Through grassroots organizing and collective action, countless heroines and heroes, such as labor leader Cesar Chavez, dedicated their lives to improving conditions in their neighborhoods and communities. In 1999, the City of San Jos acknowledged the contributions of Mexicans with the grand opening of the Mexican Heritage Plaza, a cultural center for the performing arts.
