Becoming Metropolitan

Becoming Metropolitan

Nathaniel D. Wood

Northern Illinois University Press
2010
sidottu
The "Age of Great Cities" erupted in East Central Europe in the last quarter of the nineteenth century as migrants poured into imperial and regional capitals. For citizens of places like Cracow, discovering and enacting metropolitan identities reinforced their break from a provincial past while affirming their belonging to "modern European civilization." Strolling the city streets, sipping coffee in cafés, riding the electric tram, and reading the popular press, Cracovians connected to modern big-city culture. In this lively account, Wood looks to the mass circulation illustrated press as well as to supporting evidence from memoirs and archives from the period to present Cracow as a case study that demonstrates the ways people identify with modern urban life. Wood's original study represents a major shift in thinking about Cracovian and East Central European history at the turn of the century. Challenging the previous scholarship that has focused on nationalism, Wood demonstrates that, in the realm of everyday life, urban identities were often more immediate and compelling. Becoming Metropolitan will appeal to scholars and students of urban history and the popular press, as well as to those interested in Polish history, Eastern European history, and modern European history.

This Element outlines the origins and evolution of an international award-winning development intervention, index-based livestock insurance (IBLI), which scaled from a small pilot project in Kenya to a design that underpins drought risk management products and policies across Africa. General insights are provided on i) the economics of poverty, risk management, and drylands development; ii) the evolving use of modern remote sensing and data science tools in development; iii) the science of scaling; and iv) the value and challenges of integrating research with operational implementation to tackle development and humanitarian challenges in some of the world's poorest regions. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Making Fascism in Sweden and the Netherlands

Making Fascism in Sweden and the Netherlands

There was no representative fascist movement during interwar Europe and there is much to be learned from where fascism ‘failed’, relatively speaking. So Nathaniël D. B. Kunkeler skilfully argues in Making Fascism in Sweden and the Netherlands, the first in-depth analysis of Swedish and Dutch fascism in the English language.Focusing on two peripheral – and therefore often overlooked – fascist movements (the Swedish National Socialist Workers’ Party and the Dutch National Socialist Movement), this sophisticated study de-centres contemporary fascism studies by showing how smaller movements gained political foothold in liberal, democratic regimes. From charismatic leaders and the rallies they held to propaganda apparatus and mythopoeic props seized by ordinary people, Making Fascism in Sweden and the Netherlands analyses the constructs and perceptions of fascism to highlight the variegated nature of the movement in Europe and shine a spotlight on its performative process. Drawing on a wealth of archival material and using a highly innovative methodology, Kunkeler provides a nuanced analysis of European fascism which allows readers to rediscover the experimental character of far-right politics in interwar Europe.

This true story tells the tales about the capacity of the human will. Nathaniel Allenby's (Fight to Survive, Cirque Quirk) The Cycle of Kindness regales readers with larger-than-life factual accounts of sneaking into castles, learning to dumpster dive, being robbed in London, protesting at the Camp for Climate Action, and pedaling across Germany and the Pyrenees mountains through the freezing cold. Using journal entries from the expedition to recount the more intimate details, he shares how he did the seemingly impossible. The Cycle of Kindness is a true story that recounts one man's unbelievable journey to rediscover his faith in humanity. In 2006, at age twenty-two, Nathaniel's cathartic experience began when his closest friend, Dan, offered him a one-way ticket to Europe and a bicycle upon arrival. Nathaniel's autobiography captures the next ten months of their lives, pedaling 7,500 miles, sharing the difficulties and joy of straying from "consumer culture" and living off the grid. This candid portrayal, including journal entries from his voyage, regales readers with a beautiful story of friendship, altruism, and the indomitable human spirit. A cross between Into the Wild and Eat, Pray, Love, you'll see what started out as a journey of self-discovery turn into one of revelation that we live in a great big world full of generous people. This is their story as much as it is his. This book is the beginning of a six-year journey, in which he pedaled 28,000 miles on an expedition across ten countries and thirty states, but The Cycle of Kindness will tell you how it all started. Truthfully told, readers will be bewildered that someone could survive through it all, between not knowing where their next meal would come from or being able to speak the local language. With elements such as overcoming adversity, spiritual experiences, personal growth, and love, you'll feel inspired to begin your own phenomenal life story.

An Antidote Against Toryism. Or The Curse of Meroz, in a Discourse on Judges 5th 23, by Nathaniel Whitaker D.D. Pastor of the Presbyterian Congregation in Salem, State of Massachusetts-Bay
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.Delve into what it was like to live during the eighteenth century by reading the first-hand accounts of everyday people, including city dwellers and farmers, businessmen and bankers, artisans and merchants, artists and their patrons, politicians and their constituents. Original texts make the American, French, and Industrial revolutions vividly contemporary.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. This manuscript is a work of biblical studies that uses common narratives and teachings from the bible to show that the trials and relationship dynamics that biblical figures faced are the same challenges that we face emotionally and relationally today as Christians and humans. Dr. Anthony has structured his book around a beautiful sentiment, and one that is extremely helpful in biblical counseling: we are all human, and we all face the same trials and struggles emotionally and in relationship with one another. This helps bridge the gap between biblical text and readers' modern experiences of life, showing how we can learn more about ourselves as humans and give one another grace practically through studying the word. Dr. Anthony has organized his book skillfully, taking the reader through the natural progression of the biblical text with each story, beginning with the Garden of Eden in Genesis and working his way progressively through the rest of the Old Testament and into the New Testament in the remaining chapters. This organization will be extremely helpful for readers, as it will come in a familiar order.
