March 1895. London. A month of strange happenings in the West End. First there is the bizarre murder of theater critic Jonathan McCarthy. Then the lawsuit against the Marquess of Queensberry for libel; the public is scandalized. Next, the ingenue at the Savoy is discovered with her throat slashed. And a police surgeon disappears, taking two corpses with him.
Romanticism and the Sciences

Romanticism and the Sciences

Andrew (EDT) Cunningham; Nicholas (EDT) Jardine

Cambridge University Press
1990
sidottu
This book presents a series of essays, each specially written by an expert in the area, which focus on the role of Romantic philosophy and ideology in the sciences, and on the role of the sciences in Romantic literature. The contributions are designed to give a systematic coverage of the whole field. They are written at a popular level; they are well illustrated; and are accompanied by suggestions for further reading suitable for undergraduates and others. Divided into four sections under the titles 'Romanticism', 'Sciences of the Organic', 'Sciences of the Inorganic', and 'Literature and the Sciences', the book discusses various themes, movements and theories, as well as individual scientists and writers (including Schelling, von Humboldt, Goethe, Ritter, Davy, Oersted, Kleist, Coleridge, and Buchner). There is an editorial introduction prefiguring some of the concerns of the books. This original collection, designed to provide a balance of literary and scientific interests for students in both humanistic and scientific disciplines and occupies an important place in a previously under-explored field.

In New Approaches to Balkan Studies, the editors have collected thirteen papers that explore issues of image and national identity in the Balkans; democracy, nationalism, and the related ethnic and political conflicts that have plagued the region; and leadership and conflict in Yugoslavia throughout the twentieth century. The contributors presented these papers at the annual Socrates Kokkalis Graduate Student Workshop, which was organized by the Kokkalis Program on Southeastern and East-Central Europe at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. The contributors-international scholars in disciplines that include literature, economics, political science, anthropology, sociology, international relations, and public policy-lead the reader to a less-traveled path to the study of the Balkans.
Geometric Analysis Of PDE And Several Complex Variables

Geometric Analysis Of PDE And Several Complex Variables

This volume is dedicated to Francois Treves, who made substantial contributions to the geometric side of the theory of partial differential equations (PDEs) and several complex variables. One of his best-known contributions, reflected in many of the articles here, is the study of hypo-analytic structures. An international group of well-known mathematicians contributed to the volume. Articles of this title generally reflect the interaction of geometry and analysis that is typical of Treves' work, such as the study of the special types of partial differential equations that arise in conjunction with CR-manifolds, symplectic geometry, or special families of vector fields. There are many topics in analysis and PDEs covered here, unified by their connections to geometry. The material is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in geometric analysis of PDEs and several complex variables.

First discovered and then painstakingly edited and annotated by Nicholas Meyer, "The Seven-Per-Cent Solution" relates the astounding and previously unknown collaboration of Sigmund Freud with Sherlock Holmes, as recorded by Holmes's friend and chronicler, Dr. John H. Watson. In addition to its breathtaking account of their collaboration on a case of diabolic conspiracy in which the lives of millions hang in the balance, it reveals such matters as the real identity of the heinous professor Moriarty, the dark secret shared by Sherlock and his brother Mycroft Holmes, and the detetctive's true whereabouts during the Great Hiatus, when the world believed him to be dead.
