Niel Ballingall was the eldest son of William Ballingall (1800-1888), Factor of the estates of Balbirnie and Balgonie in Markinch Parish, Fife. Niel would eventually follow in his father's footsteps becoming the third generation of the Ballingall family to retain the position of Factor to the Balfour family. Niel Ballingall would purchase residences in the parish more than his father and grandfather ever did, becoming a proprietor of a residence at Coaltown of Balgonie, Milton of Balgonie and residences on Betson and Commercial Streets in the village of Markinch. He developed a very strong interest in farming and the breeding of cattle but it was in the great development of coal mining on the Balgonie estate that he found the fullest scope for his abilities and energy. Niel would never marry, thus ending the line of succession of Ballingalls who would become future Factors of the estates of Balbirnie and Balgonie of the Balfour family. With Niel's death in 1916, his demise effectively ended the dominance of the family as Factors which spanned 142 years. Ballingall himself served in the position for 24 years before his retirement in October of 1912. This then is the narrative of the life and times of the last Ballingall Factor of Balbirnie and Balgonie.

His nephew, the Reverend James Ballingall (1846-1926) described his uncle, Niel Ballingall as an "old bachelor with a stiff knee that obliged him to walk with a staff, and there was an air of comic dignity about him, as of a person of great importance and he loved nothing better than giving orders to anyone who was obliged to take them." He was the last son of Niel Ballingall (1750-1843) the Factor of Balbirnie and like his siblings grew up at Sweetbank in Markinch Parish. In the later years of his father's life, he was his clerk. When his sister, Elizabeth Pratt (1795-1863) inherited her late husband's lands at Seggie and Dochrie in Orwell Parish, Kinrossshire in 1842, she asked him to occupy these lands as a tenant farmer at Seggie which he did for over the next twenty years. He eventually retired from farming and resided in Leslie Parish, Fife and in his later years relocated back to Markinch. This then is the narrative of the life and times of Niel Ballingall, the tenant farmer of Seggie.

He was named after the minister of Kennoway, Dr. Niel Bethune who was ordained only a few months before the child's birth. Niel Balligall was born of humble parents and after growing up in Kennoway Parish, Fife, the history of the family suggests that he may have been a clerk for a time in a lawyer's office in Cupar, and may have assisted Mr. A. Small, Factor at Balbirnie, before succeeding him as Factor in 1770, at the age of 20. Another account of his early years suggests that he was apprenticed to Mr. Jamieson, writer at Brymers Newton west of Kennoway where he had the benefit of his library, of which he made the most diligent use. He would continuously serve the Balfour family whose residence was Balbirnie House until 1969. Today the Balbirnie House is a hotel. Niel and his first wife, Betty McKenzie, are said to have given the name of the newly built Factor's House "Sweetbank," on the Balbirnie estate. Unfortunately, she would die within a year of their marriage, leaving no children. Ballingall, within two years of her death, would marry Isabella Russell, another old Fife farming family and have 13 children while at Sweetbank. In his early days of his Factorship at Balbirnie, he took a lease of the farm of Auchmuty on the Rothes estate. It was thought that Ballingall needed more money to support his growing family. On a large estate like Balbirnie, Ballingall had numerous responsibilities which included the management of the farm steadings; securing new tenants; roads and bridges on the estate to repair or build; improvements on the estate which included extensive tree planting and drainage of any bog land's and other miscellaneous duties as required. One such stone bridge that may have been constructed by the Factor is still presently standing which would have been wide enough for a cart is located on the southwest boundary of Star Moss. As Ballingall grew older he was happy to have his son, William (1800-1888), as his assistant and successor as Factor on the Balbirnie estate. Niel and his son were successively Factors at Balbirnie for considerably more than a century. This then is the narrative of the life and times of Niel Ballingall, the Factor of Balbirnie.

Hysteria was a frequently diagnosed illness in the West through the nineteenth and much of the twentieth century. Today the medical profession has virtually abandoned the diagnosis altogether. However, this does not mean that hysteria has ceased to exist. In The Nature of Hysteria, Niel Micklem argues that the disease has merely shifted into other personal and collective forms. He traces the history of hysteria from ancient Egyptian times to the present and examines its mythic background. He also describes the involvement of sexuality in the clinical manifestations of hysteria to witchcraft, and various collective manifestations of hysteria in the form of sexual permissiveness and unisexual behaviour. Arguing that hysteria is much more than an illness, Niel Micklem suggests that the denial of hysteria in individual patients has coincided with the creation of an increasingly hysterical society.

In the murky world of espionage few rules apply. Everything is permitted in the name of state security - even talking to the country's Enemy No. 1. This is exactly what Niel Barnard, then head of the National Intelligence Service (NIS), did in the late 1980s, conducting top-secret talks with Nelson Mandela in prison - the precursor to Mandela's release and the democratic elections. The book also sheds light on the daily lives of spies during NIS's heyday in the 1980s and contains several revelations about the organisation's accomplishments.
Part I (eleven chapters) of this text for graduate students provides a Survey of topological fields, while Part II (five chapters) provides a relatively more idiosyncratic account of valuation theory.
