As Noura and her husband Tariq prepare to celebrate a traditional Christmas she looks forward to welcoming a special guest-Maryam a young Iraqi refugee. But the girl's arrival opens wounds the family has tried to leave behind forcing them to confront where they are where they've been and who they have become.
It's easy for children to feel like there is nothing they can do as individuals to influence the world around them. Their worlds are often limited to where we allow them to venture.Parents want to protect their children from the scary outside world, but in doing so, children often grow up being disconnected from their social communities, and connected for hours on end, to their devices.Noura Saves the Planet is about a young girl who, while bored on her school holidays, is encouraged by her mum to go on an adventure in search of ways to better shape her world. Noura's understanding of "saving the planet" is challenged by the fact that she knows she can't venture too far from home, so she comes across good deeds that she can do locally.Filled with diverse characters from all walks of life, this colourful and unique book is the perfect tool for parents to teach their children about the power they hold in their little hands.Young reader will be inspired to believe that they do have the ability to influence their social and environmental world, even if it is one step at a time at a local level.
Venturing out after dusk with her family, a child is eager to watch for the new moon that signals the start of Eid ul-Fitr celebrations in this charming picture-book debut. With Ramadan and her first month of fasting almost over, Noura, Mama and Papa are headed to the hills for a moonsighting picnic. It would be truly special if Noura could catch a glimpse of the faint silvery crescent, something even her mother has never managed to do. If the moon stays hidden, that means one more long day before the joyful Eid celebrations begin – bringing with them visits with friends, eating sweets and painting henna on her hands. In a lighthearted introduction to Ramadan and Eid, this family-centred tale of anticipation under the stars captures everything from the bustle of a shared meal to the swirling magic of the night sky.
