Outi Tarkiainen: Beaivi - Study Score
Beaivi is inspired by the Sami poet Nils-Aslak Valkeapää's poem "When that time approaches", where the first encounter with light after the lengthy polar night is described with exceptional significance. The word beaivi comes from the northern Sami language meaning sun or day. The play of light - its dawn, a brief shimmering before darkening again - are characterized throughout the textures and timbres of the piece. Beaivi is dedicated to the Danish chamber music ensemble Lydenskab, who also commissioned the work.
Outi Tarkiainen: Saivo - Concerto For Soprano Saxophone, Effects and Orchestra (Score)
The Saxophone Concerto Saivo paints a musical portrait of a saxophonist of a new kind. The word "saivo" originates from the ancient Sami beliefs meaning a two-bottomed lake, where under a lake dwells another lake and another world which is inhabited by otherworldly creatures - a world that is the exact mirror image of our world. The saxophone concerto builds sonorous timbral bridges between the effected soprano saxophone and the orchestra, and grows eventually into an illusion of another reality which is similar, yet in a peculiar way different than the world we know. The work was commissioned by Tapiola Sinfonietta and it is dedicated to the saxophonist Jukka Perko.
Outi Tarkiainen: Joye - For Sinfonietta
Outi Tarkiainen's Joye for Sinfonietta (2017).Programme Note by the composer:Joye is a miniature or an orchestral fanfare, essentially bright throughout and aphoristically pithy. The title alludes to the ancient French word meaning "bliss" and "Fortune", and my intention was to load the piece with all the elation and recklessness that flash through a person in a moment of intense happiness. The sombre, sturdy chord pillars at the beginning surge into a landscape in which first the clarinets, then the oboesand finally the trumpets lead the music to mighty ferment and a clarity that suffuses all.The work was commissioned by the Pori Sinfonietta, Finland.Premiere by Pori Sinfonietta and Janne Nisonen (cond.) on December 6, 2017, Promenade Hall, Pori, Finland.

Debates over the Resurrection of the Dead

Debates over the Resurrection of the Dead

In Debates over the Resurrection of the Dead, Outi Lehtipuu highlights the striking observation that in many early texts the way that belief in resurrection is formulated is used as a sign of inclusion and exclusion, not only in relation to non-Christians but vis-à-vis other Christians. Those who teach otherwise have deviated from the truth, are not true Christians, and do the works of the devil. Using insights from the sociological study of deviance, Dr Lehtipuu demonstrates that labelling was used as a tool for marking boundaries between those who belonged and those who did not. This was extremely important in the fluid conditions where the small Christian minority groups found themselves. In a situation where there were no universally accepted structures that defined what constituted the true Christian belief, several competing interpretations and their representatives struggled for recognition of their views based on what they believed to be the apostolic tradition. The most hotly-debated aspect of resurrection was whether it would entail the body of flesh and blood or not. When resurrection would take place was closely related to this. Controversies died since the scriptural legacy was ambiguous enough to allow different hermeneutical solutions. The battle over resurrection was closely related to the question of how scriptures were to be understood as well as to what constituted the human self that would survive death. To demonstrate this a wide variety of texts are studied, from theological treatises (including relevant Nag Hammadi texts) to apocryphal acts and martyrologies. Acknowledging the complexity and diversity of the early Christian movement, this volume views early Christian discourse as part of the broader ancient discursive world where similar debates were going on among both Jews and the majority population.
The Contentious Politics of Statebuilding
The book examines the dynamics between domestic and international statebuilding actors. While the dynamics between "local" and "international" statebuilding actors have been previously theorised through concepts such as hybridity and friction, there have been few attempts to develop conceptual tools for the empirical study of statebuilding dynamics. By drawing on a set of concepts and mechanisms developed in the Contentious Politics literature, this book fills this gap. It deploys concepts such as political opportunity structures, mobilizing structures and framing to trace the interactions between domestic and international statebuilding actors in the case of post-conflict Bosnia and Herzegovina. The analysis identifies a set of practices operating at various domains of Bosnia’s society—institutional, symbolic and discursive—through which domestic statebuilding actors seek to influence the internationally-driven statebuilding process. Responses by the international statebuilding actors to such activities have often resulted in further contention. The book argues that the dynamics between the different statebuilding actors and agendas in the Bosnian case are characterised not only by conflict and contention but also symbiosis whereby the presence of non-conforming local actors justifies the extension of international mandates while the continued international presence generates further contestation. These observations and the conceptual tools introduced in the book add to our understanding of the often slow and arduous statebuilding processes in post-conflict societies. This book will be of much interest to students of statebuilding, peacebuilding, European politics and international relations in general.

End-of-life documentaries have proliferated in the 21st century as various organisations, institutions, journalists, independent filmmakers, and members of the public have wanted to give death and dying a face in the public discussion. Each documentary film that concerns individuals with a terminal illness, in hospice care, or desiring assisted death, redefines cultural expectations of what dying is and feels like. These films invite their viewers to witness intimate and emotional moments of dying people, including moments on their deathbed. Filming Death explores these documentaries as ethical spaces, asking the viewers to learn how to engage with end-of-life through the experiences of others and to find ways to alleviate potential death anxiety. The book argues that the diversity of documentary films resists simplified moral divisions between good and bad death, and instead, embellishes diverse realities where dying takes many forms, ranging from death acceptance to raging to death.

Rhetoric of Modern Death in American Living Dead Films
Zombies, vampires and mummies are frequent stars of American horror films. But what does their cinematic omnipresence and audiences’ hunger for such films tell us about American views of death? Here, Outi Hakola investigates the ways in which American living-dead films have addressed death through different narrative and rhetorical solutions during the twentieth century. She focuses on films from the 1930s, including Dracula, The Mummy and White Zombie, films of the 1950s and 1960s such as Night of the Living Dead and The Return of Dracula, as well as more recent fare like Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Mummy and Resident Evil.
