The End of Sexual Identity – Why Sex Is Too Important to Define Who We Are

Sexual identity has become an idol in both the culture at large and in the Christian subculture. And yet concepts like "gay" or "straight" are relatively recent developments in human history. We let ourselves be defined by socially constructed notions of sexual identity and sexual orientation--even though these may not be the only or best ways to think about sexuality. Anthropologist Jenell Williams Paris offers a Christian framework for sexual holiness that accounts for complex postmodern realities. She assesses problems with popular cultural and Christian understandings of heterosexuality and homosexuality alike. The End of Sexual Identity moves beyond culture-war impasses to open up new space for conversations in diverse communities both inside and outside the church.

Paul Howard Williams (1954-81) ArtWorkYoung British Artist 1970's London&Paris With most of Pauls artwork there were no titles, only the materials, unsigned, as if not dispensing with any piece, just, yet... These are (mostly) abstract expressionist pieces, of their time, and also ahead of his time. Abstract and expressionist (as in not figurative), they 'can be whatever you want them to be'. Yet, there are many, many figurative references, hints and forms, that are also expressive. As the viewer takes them, how they appear, as faces, a skull, or in the built landscapes, as they chime with the viewer, clearly of Paul's worldview, and life, also of the viewer. There are wonderful vignettes. Like a milk bottle, Parisian window shutters, a deckchair to see the world, the universe, from. There is abstract Landscape, Universal Space, and the felt Transcendental. Pictures, often with near perfect, but never of course perfect, geometric shapes, trapezium and especially circles, or ellipses. Folding and gluing of paper and card as two to three and more multi-dimensional constructions, Paul would use newspaper print, discarded cigarette packets, and found packaging, plain brown or grey paper, and the blackest, reddest, bluest of colour. Occasionally green and yellow. With overdrawn marks whether of chalk, gauche, or paint, made deliberately, and over an indefinite period of time. So that the finished, discarded pieces appear as if unfinished, as every artwork must, leaving room for the viewer, the appreciator... When I'm 64 2018. A stunning debut novel written by a black American expatriate and diplomat whose real-life experiences inform the narrative. Resplendent with history, jazz, and mystery, this novel is perfect for fans of Nathanael West, Dashiell Hammett and the Lost Generation of American writers in Paris in the early years of the 20th century, such as Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. A gifted black musician from New Orleans, Urby Brown, decides to leave Jim Crow behind and head to Paris. Joining the French Foreign Legion, Urby fights in WWI for France and later settles in Paris along with other black expatriates rather than return to worsening racial climate in America. He discovers a vocation as an undercover detective. Filled with intrigue and crazy adventure, Urby s quests will lead him face to face with a devious Nazi plot against America all the while discovering who he really is. An expertly blended tale of historical and criminal fiction and flat out farce, this tale gives us an incomparable view of Paris in the turbulent years between the electrifying debut of Josephine Baker and the fanatic political and cultural upheavals leading to WWII. This one of a kind story with its unique hero captivates readers from the beginning and dramatizes all the dangers of a climate gone wrong."
Like the historical thrillers of Alan Furst, this novel explores the lives of black Americans as they confront the demons of nationalism, racism and anti-Semitism which spawned the deadly horrors of the last century and are alive today, leading perhaps to new disasters.
This guidebook describes one hundred select restaurants and gourmet shops that have delighted Parisians themselves for more than a century, places where the vanished world of 19th-century Paris and all its romance, history, and beauty still exists. Crossing these thresholds, the discriminating diner and shopper can step into a gilded Belle Epoque setting favored by Degas, a vintage confectioner that supplied bonbons to Monet, a shaded cafe terrace frequented by Zola. With this guidebook in hand, Hemingway fans can sit at Brasserie Lipp and order the exact meal he described in A Moveable Feast all items are still on the menu today. From tiny patisseries, cozy bistros and rustic wine bars barely known outside the quarter to bustling brasseries, elegant tea salons, and world famous cafes, The Historic Restaurants of Paris is an indispensible guide to classic cuisine served in settings of startling beauty. Text includes charming anecdotes relating to each restaurant's history and celebrated former patrons.
