Becoming a Pastoral Parish Council: A Guide for a Synodal Church
Becoming a Pastoral Parish Council is a basic primer on how a parish council can be set up and organized, and what roles it can play. It sets out a practical approach for parishes to set up and run a parish council, outlining its role in a church with fewer clergy and religious to take on leadership roles, and in line with Pope Francis's teachings in Evangelii Gaudium. Endorsements"This slender volume does not intend to address nitty gritty issues like the council's organizational structure or membership or frequency of meetings. Rather, it addresses parish pastoral councils on a higher level, providing insights on matters such as 'the five P's of parish pastoral councils': Participation, Pastoral, Prayerful, Partnership, and Planning.... As the Church moves forward in implementing co-responsibility between its clergy and laity at all levels, we need more thoughtful individuals like Patricia Carroll to step forward with the best thinking in Church administration and governance, such as that contained in this book."--From the foreword by Charles E. Zech, professor emeritus of Church management, Villanova UniversityA native of Scotland, Patricia Carroll is director for mission and ministry in the Archdiocese of Dublin. She has worked for over twenty years in developing lay people for ministries both as a practitioner in parish pastoral work and as an educator of lay people.+

This book has been written in a year when Parish Pastoral Councils (PPC) could not meet physically due to the Covid 19 pandemic. For many PPCs this meant that some stopped meeting or met on zoom, or at least re-grouped to form the backbone of the parish sanitising committee. It is hoped that those who read this book will have an "aha" moment, where they find that the purpose of PPC’s becomes more clear to them, and they can begin to imagine the part they can play in the pastoral development of their parish. The role of the PPC is explored relating this to the purpose of the parish community, debunking the myth that the PPC is a committee. It also looks at what can be called the five P’s of the PPC: Pastoral, Prayerful, Partnership, Planning and Participation. The whole notion of discernment for pastoral action is explored and how this relates to the ongoing prayer-filled reflection of the PPC and the parish community. Then there is an in-depth exploration into the whole notion of partnership and the implications for how the PPC relates to the parish community. There are some very practical helps about what makes planning in the PPC pastoral, and how that can be developed as a way of working in all parish groups. The purpose of mission statements is examined and how these can provide a platform for parish renewal and reflection, connecting them to parish assembly and listening together.

This thought-provoking history of corporate responsibility in the USA is a landmark publication documenting the story of corporate power and business behavior from the mid-eighteenth century to the modern day. It shows how the idea of corporate responsibility has evolved over time, with the roles, responsibilities and performance of corporations coming increasingly under the spotlight as new norms of transparency and accountability emerge. Today, it is expected that a corporation will be transparent in its operations; that it will reflect ethical values that are broadly shared by others in society; and that companies will enable society to achieve environmental sustainability as well as a high standard of living. As we enter the second decade of the twenty-first century, the social, political and economic landscape is once again shifting: the need for an informed public conversation about what is expected of the modern corporation has never been greater.

"The book not only gives a clear picture of the policy and strategic framework of PFI/PPP projects, the governance and knowledge management issues through different phases from planning, design development to operation and service delivery and the processes associated with each phase, but practical tools, methodologies and capabilities needed to deliver PFI/PPP projects in a range of sectors are also explained. It clearly demonstrates the key imperatives that are the hallmark of successful programmes and projects no matter what there method of funding or delivery. I have no doubt that, in undertaking the programmes and projects that I am responsible for delivering and in undertaking OGC Gateway Reviews, to support clients delivering their own programmes and projects, I will draw on the material contained in this book." —From the Foreword by Rob Smith, Director of Gateway Reviews and Estates & Facilities, Department of Health There is a growing demand worldwide for transport, healthcare, education, energy and water infrastructure. However, government resources are often insufficient to meet the needs of new projects and to upgrade existing infrastructure. Private participation in public infrastructure is therefore increasing but the respective roles of the public and private sectors are the subject of intense debate. This has led to renewed interest in public-private partnerships in developed and developing countries. Governance and Knowledge Management for Public-Private Partnerships shows how effective governance and knowledge management can improve the performance of PFI/PPP projects. It provides an in-depth understanding of different dimensions of governance and how they affect project management structure, processes, and decision-making ability of actors and teams involved in PFI/PPP projects. The role of knowledge management strategy, the need for benchmarking knowledge management efforts, specific tools and methodologies for capturing, sharing and applying knowledge to accelerate learning and capacity building are also examined. The book is essential reading for all those involved in PFI/PPP projects, including policy makers, industry practitioners, academics and students. The practical tools for governance and knowledge management it offers make this book particularly useful for consultants, contractors and client organisations.

Felicity Carrol is interested in everything - except being a proper young matron of Victorian society. Brilliant and resourceful, Felicity took refuge in science and education after her mother died and her father abandoned her to servants. Now, all he wants is for her to marry into a family of status and money. Felicity has other ambitions, but her plans shudder to a halt when her mentor is murdered at the British Museum and his priceless manuscript of King Arthur lore is stolen. A Transformational Grammar of Igbo

A Transformational Grammar of Igbo

Patricia L. Carrell

Originally published in 1970, this is a descriptive linguistic analysis of the grammar of modern Igbo. The analysis, based primarily on material gathered from two native speakers, one from Owerri Province and the other from Umuahia Province, is presented in the framework of the transformational model developed by Noam Chomsky. The grammar is a practical attempt to apply some of the advances in theoretical linguistics to a little-known language. There is no other grammar of Igbo in existence which presents a comprehensive descriptive analysis of the underlying and surface systems of the syntax and phonology of the language. The book will be useful for linguists as an example of the application of the transformational model to an exotic language. It will be of interest to specialists in African studies for the insights gained and the data presented from an important African language.

Capture and Reuse of Project Knowledge in Construction An organisation’s competitive advantage lies in the knowledge of its employees and the organisation’s ability to harness that knowledge to meet business objectives. Knowledge management is recognised in the construction industry as a potential tool for providing organisational benefits, but for a number of reasons – particularly the project based nature of construction, where teams are transient, multidisciplinary and often from different organisations – implementation has been only marginally successful. Capture and Reuse of Project Knowledge in Construction describes a methodology for the ‘live’ capture of reusable project knowledge that reflects both the organisational and human dimensions of knowledge capture and reuse, as well as exploiting the benefits of technology. This methodology was developed in response to the shortcomings of current practices in managing project knowledge, the benefits offered by capturing and sharing knowledge immediately after it is generated, and the organisational benefit of reusing knowledge within a project based environment. Written for all practitioners in project-based industries who have struggled with the capture and reuse of knowledge on their projects, it will also be of interest to students and researchers in construction management and allied disciplines.
