This readable book features K–12 teachers and teacher educators who report their experiences of culturally responsive literacy teaching in primarily high poverty, culturally non-dominant communities. These extraordinary teachers show us what culturally responsive literacy teaching looks like in their classrooms and how it advances children’s academic achievement. This collection captures different dimensions of culturally responsive (CR) practice, such as linking home and school, using culturally responsive literature, establishing relationships with children and parents, using cultural connections, and teaching English language learners and children who speak African American language. This engaging collection:Provides a window into what teachers actually do and think when they serve culturally diverse children, including classroom-tested teaching practices.Depicts teachers enacting CR teaching in the presence of scripted curricula and rigid testing schedules.Covers childhood, secondary, and higher education classrooms.Helps readers imagine how they can transform their own classrooms through “Make it in Your Classroom” sections at the end of each chapter.Includes a “Becoming a Culturally Responsive Teacher” self-evaluation form.

In a world like this where so many things happen on a day-to-day basis with our children, we need for them to feel secure within themselves and not threatened by anyone or anything. In order for that to happen, they need to feel good and confident within themselves at an early age. My Unique Self helps one to accept themselves as they are and how God has made them to be because we are all unique and wonderfully made, no matter who we are or what nationality we came from. It is also important to feel good about yourself from an early age because that builds character for development in life. Believing in one's self is extremely important and should begin at an early age, to promote success in life, relationships, friendships, and family. We are also wonderfully made, so there is no reason for us not to think of ourselves in a positive manner. I trust this book will build good self-esteem and teach that no matter what we look like or where we come from, we should accept ourselves for who we are and how we look because we are God's handmade. Let's begin to create good vibes about ourselves by believing in ourselves.

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the effects that teacher mentoring had on high school students' behavior within a midwestern high school setting. During parent-teacher conferences, on average, 12% of parents attended. Approximately 2% of parents attended the monthly School Advisory Committee meeting and extracurricular activities. Students of this dissertation setting exhibited negative behaviors, which interfered with learning. In addition, 20% of the student population was referred to the administrative team for minor infractions occurring within classrooms. Adults and parents tended not to be involved in disciplinary efforts, and, therefore, students lacked reinforcement that may have enhanced their behavioral standing.

Bedtime Stories and Book Reports

Bedtime Stories and Book Reports is the right book at the right time… The editors have gathered an impressive group of researchers and practitioners to provide insights into working with families in productive and empowering ways. . . . Happy reading!” —Patricia A. Edwards, president, International Reading Association, 2010-2011. “The fundamental ideological orientation of the volume’s authors is to set right the prevailing parents-as-problem orientation sometimes put forward by school administrators, teachers, and policymakers.” —From the Afterword by Shirley Brice Heath, professor emerita, Stanford University. “Children can't reach their full potential for literacy development without the participation of parents. The editors have brought together an excellent group of authors who provide new information and a hopeful look at family literacy. This is a must-read.” —Lesley Morrow, Graduate School of Education, Rutgers University. This book brings together the newest research on parent involvement and family literacy—two strands of research that rarely exist in conversation with one another. The discussion highlights how race, class, gender, and history serve as potent factors that shape children’s school experiences. Each chapter offers portraits of real families and schools that illustrate parents’ awareness of their children’s school progress, their perceptions of teachers, and their involvement in teaching their children life lessons that extend beyond school achievement. Translating theory into action, this resource: Extends conversations about parent involvement and family literacy across time and multiple spaces—home, school, church, and community; Challenges accepted notions by listening to parents’ counter-stories of how they are involved with their children both in and out of school; Highlights the significance of race, class, gender, religion, sexual preference, and history in literacy learning and schooling.
