Rereads Antonia White's writing within the context of manic-depressive illnessMisdiagnosed as suffering from schizophrenia instead of what was bipolar or manic-depressive illness, Antonia White turned repeatedly to psychoanalysis and Catholicism to resolve the emotional conflicts that she believed were the cause of her tumultuous moods, her inexplicable behaviour, and her writer's block. This study rereads White's writing within the context of manic-depressive illness to show how the misdiagnosis of her illness shaped the identity narratives White constructed in her life-writing and then used as the basis for her strongly autobiographical fiction. White's self-narratives have skewed critical interpretations of her work; at the same time, her fiction has not been studied as expressive of affective disorder. By contextualising White's life-writing and fiction within the contexts of manic-depression and narrative identity, 'Antonia White and Manic-Depressive' Illness proposes a new model for reading White; documents the complex interplay of biological, psychological, and environmental factors involved in affective disorder; and historicises the diagnosis and treatment of White's illness in medical, psychoanalytic, and Catholic contexts.Key FeaturesRereads Antonia White's writing in the context of manic-depressive illness and scholarship on narrative identity and illnessDocuments the ways in which early psychoanalytic theories of female development impacted White through her Freudian analysis in the 1930sDocuments how psychoanalysis and Catholicism served as master narratives or templates for White's stories of self

In Beyond the Veil, is a collection of six short stories. The Devil Inside - A story of a psychopathic killer with extraordinary powers, who like his father before him finds joy in stalking, marrying, and torturing his victim. The Tower Sensitive Amanda has moved way too many times to escape her stalker. She has changed her identity multiple times, left family and friends behind, all the while hiding her paranormal abilities. It appears that her stalker may have found her again. What will she do? The House That Hid - A Ghostly Tale A fabulous haunted short story. Told in first person, it takes place at a haunted house in Chicago. Marta's story is a fun and nostalgic experience that has you wondering if ghosts really live amongst us. Best on audio Jane Doe - Jane Doe found unconscious and naked with only her long red hair covering her body. The police try to help her find out who she was but to no avail. They soon lose interest. After nine years she wanted to die. She felt alone in her dingy apartment. Will she ever learn who she was and where she came from? Miss Tofte - I found myself wondering if she had been born out of the files or they were born together. At any rate, the files and Miss Tofte were inextricably tied up with each other. I tell you it was weird If it had been anybody else, I would have felt kind of sad about it, I mean, a little old lady with no life other than the file department. But with Miss Tofte, you had an altogether different feeling. This was the way she liked it, make no mistake, this was her choice. The Void - A Brilliant Mind-Bending Story Does Altori suffer from a multitude of mental illnesses or is something stranger lurking in the darkness? Her affliction could certainly be described as delusional paranoid schizophrenia with a tendency to inflict wounds upon herself. The author takes a great deal of time and effort into stimulating the reader's senses, but ultimately where is she leading us in this short prequel? Ultimately, "Brigadoon" and then "The Knowing" came to mind, but the again are we just eaves dropping into the mind of a mental patient? The Void is an absolutely brilliant mind-bending story that will keep you guessing

As many as one in four women have suffered severe neglect or abuse in childhood. This doubles the likelihood of their suffering clinical depression in adult life. Based on twenty years of systematic research,Wednesday's Child examines why neglect and abuse occur and demonstrates how such negative experience in childhood often results in abusive adult relationships, low self-esteem and depression. Drawing on interviews with over 200 women, the authors show vividly what can be learned from the experience of adult survivors of abuse. Most importantly, Wednesday's Child assesses the factors which can reduce the later impact of such experience on both the children of today and the parents of tomorrow.

Committed action is an important part of the hexaflex model for acceptances and commitment therapy (ACT)-the other core processes being acceptance, defusion, self-as-context and perspective taking, values clarification, and mindfulness. In practice, committed action happens when clients act in the direction of their identified values, even in the presence of obstacles. Written by Patricia Bach and Daniel J. Moran, two ACT-oriented experts who are highly prolific in the field of modern behavioral psychology, Committed Action in Practice is a deep, focused exploration of this core aspect of ACT. With sections on the conceptualization, application, and integration of committed action in ACT, you'll gain an understanding of how this process fits into the hexagon model, what blocks people from taking values-based action, and how to blend the committed action component of ACT with other evidence-based therapies. With this comprehensive guide, you'll know just how committed action works in an ACT treatment plan and be ready to apply it in practice.

De klinisk-orienterede kapitler i bogen vil rumme to betydningsfulde afsnit: "Terapeutens indstilling" og "Checking In". Patricia A. Bach, ph.d. er professor i psykologi ved Illinois Institute of Technolog. Daniel J. Moran, ph.d. er leder af Family Counseling Center og grundlægger af The MidAmerican Psychological Institute in Joliet, Illinois.
