Aboard the Fabre Line to Providence: Immigration to Rhode Island

In an era when immigration was at its peak, the Fabre Line offered the only transatlantic route to southern New England. One of its most important ports was in Providence, Rhode Island. Nearly eighty-four thousand immigrants were admitted to the country between the years 1911 and 1934. Almost one in nine of these individuals elected to settle in Rhode Island after landing in Providence, amounting to around eleven thousand new residents. Most of these immigrants were from Portugal and Italy, and the Fabre Line kept up a brisk and successful business. However, both the line and the families hoping for a new life faced major obstacles in the form of World War I, the immigration restriction laws of the 1920s, and the Great Depression. Join authors Patrick T. Conley and William J. Jennings Jr. as they chronicle the history of the Fabre Line and its role in bringing new residents to the Ocean State.

Rhode Island has a long history of constitutional governance. Beginning in 1636, Rhode Island's constitution has been shaped by revolution, nation-building, tumult, and further changes wrought by everything from neo-liberalism to gay rights. The result has been a living document reflecting conflicting and changing values, making the Rhode Island constitution an essential resource for understanding the cultural history of this state. In The Rhode Island State Constitution Patrick T. Conley and Robert J. Flanders provide an outstanding constitutional and historical account of the state's governing charter. In addition to an overview of Rhode Island's constitutional history, it provides an in-depth, section-by-section analysis of the entire constitution, detailing the many significant changes that have been made since its initial drafting. This treatment, along with a table of cases, index, and bibliography provides an unsurpassed reference guide for students, scholars, and practitioners of Rhode Island's constitution. Previously published by Greenwood, this title has been brought back in to circulation by Oxford University Press with new verve. Re-printed with standardization of content organization in order to facilitate research across the series. This title, as with all titles in the series, is set to join the dynamic revision cycle of The Oxford Commentaries on the State Constitutions of the United States. The themes of South Providence--urbanization, immigration, and industrialization--best characterize the nation's modern development. This volume reveals how a well-known Providence community worshipped, studied, worked, played, ate, and drank. The denizens of South Providence were an extraordinary mix. The geographic and demographic developments of the 19th century crafted the economically diverse, dense, and multicultural community of the 20th century. Today, almost every major avenue still contains a varied mixture of residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional uses with institutional development on the rise. The theme of this volume transcends South Providence and serves as the prototype of a 20th-century, inner-city ethnic neighborhood with variegated and successive waves of immigrant arrivals. Its focus is on their upward socioeconomic mobility, their social and cultural activities, and their religious traditions. Thirty-nine neighborhood residents have been inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame. That group exceeds the number of inductees from any Rhode Island city or town, except, of course, Providence, of which this vibrant neighborhood is a part.

Rhode Island's contribution to World War II vastly exceeded its small size. Narragansett Bay was an armed camp dotted by army forts and navy facilities. They included the country's most important torpedo production and testing facilities at Newport and the Northeast's largest naval air station at Quonset Point. Three special, top-secret German POW camps were based in Narragansett and Jamestown. Meanwhile, Rhode Island workers from all over the state--including, for the first time, many women--manufactured military equipment and built warships, most notably the Liberty ships at Providence Shipyard. Authors from the Rhode Island history blog smallstatebighistory.com trace Rhode Island's outsized wartime role, from the scare of an enemy air raid after Pearl Harbor to the war's final German U-boat sunk off Point Judith.
Divorce, Taxes and the IRS: Former IRS Attorney Tells All (the dirty little secrets the IRS doesn't want you to know)
I am Patrick T. Sheehan, a former IRS attorney. I wrote my second book, Divorce, Taxes and the IRS, to help people that are divorced or are divorcing navigate the tax and IRS side of your marriage. Not only are you untangling and terminating a marriage, but you are also untangling and terminating a financial and, perhaps, a business relationship. Like it or not, the money side of your marriage is a financial relationship. Perhaps you have bank accounts together. Perhaps you have assets together, like a home or cars or a business. You likely filed joint tax returns together. Your divorce, in addition to terminating the marriage and dealing with the kids, also must address the financial side of your relationship, and that includes taxes and the IRS. When you have an IRS problem, it is often your deepest, darkest secret. It is not something that you easily talk about and it certainly is not something you talk about at a cocktail party. You may not even tell your spouse or your business partner. But I am here to tell you that there is a way out, but you can't do it alone. I am a former IRS attorney which gave me the specialized training on how to solve IRS problems. This book will help divorcing or divorced individuals identify IRS problems in their divorce case and tackle those issues head on. When you are divorcing, you want to ensure that all of the issues are wrapped up when the divorce is over so that you can move on with your life. If there is a hidden or ignored IRS problem lurking in your divorce case, the IRS issues can cause big problems for you years into the future. Further, the ultimate settlement that is reached between the parties regarding the division of money and assets would probably have been far different if the IRS problem was addressed before or during the divorce proceedings. Let's bring your IRS problem out into the sunshine so that we can permanently solve your IRS problem together

Chicago River Bridges

Chicago River Bridges

Patrick T. McBriarty

University of Illinois Press
2013
sidottu
Chicago River Bridges presents the untold history and development of Chicago's iconic bridges, from the first wood footbridge built by a tavern owner in 1832 to the fantastic marvels of steel, concrete, and machinery of today. It is the story of Chicago as seen through its bridges, for it has been the bridges that proved critical in connecting and reconnecting the people, industry, and neighborhoods of a city that is constantly remaking itself. In this book, author Patrick T. McBriarty shows how generations of Chicagoans built (and rebuilt) the thriving city trisected by the Chicago River and linked by its many crossings. The first comprehensive guidebook of these remarkable features of Chicago's urban landscape, Chicago River Bridges chronicles more than 175 bridges spanning 55 locations along the Main Channel, South Branch, and North Branch of the Chicago River. With new full-color photography of the existing bridges by Kevin Keeley and Laura Banick and more than one hundred black and white images of bridges past, the book unearths the rich history of Chicago's downtown bridges from the Michigan Avenue Bridge to the often forgotten bridges that once connected thoroughfares such as Rush, Erie, Taylor, and Polk Streets.Throughout, McBriarty delivers new research into the bridges' architectural designs, engineering innovations, and their impact on Chicagoans' daily lives. Describing the structure and mechanics of various kinds of moveable bridges (including vertical-lift, Scherer rolling lift, and Strauss heel trunnion mechanisms) in a manner that is accessible and still satisfying to the bridge aficionado, he explains how the dominance of the "Chicago-style" bascule drawbridge influenced the style and mechanics of bridges worldwide. Interspersed throughout are the human dramas that played out on and around the bridges, such as the floods of 1849 and 1992, the cattle crossing collapse of the Rush Street Bridge, or Vincent "The Schemer" Drucci's Michigan Avenue Bridge jump.A confluence of Chicago history, urban design, and engineering lore, Chicago River Bridges illustrates Chicago's significant contribution to drawbridge innovation and the city's emergence as the drawbridge capital of the world. It is perfect for any reader interested in learning more about the history and function of Chicago's many and varied bridges. The introduction won The Henry N. Barkhausen Award for original research in the field of Great Lakes maritime history sponsored by the Association for Great Lakes Maritime History.
