Principien der Sprachgeschichte (1880) is Hermann Paul's best-known work. In this book, the German literary scholar and linguist argues that although language is a product of human culture and the study of language is therefore best categorised as history, language can most effectively be analysed with methods taken from the natural sciences. Paul develops a system of principles that draws heavily on cognitive and psychological elements in order to account for how language has developed. In 14 chapters he sets out a detailed account of the history of language that includes general observations on the development of language, the consequences of sound change, semantic shift and the divergence of etymologically connected words, and aspects of syntax. He also compares written and spoken language varieties, and the origins of dialects and standard languages.

This book provides a comprehensive algebraic treatment of hypergroups, as defined by F. Marty in 1934. It starts with structural results, which are developed along the lines of the structure theory of groups. The focus then turns to a number of concrete classes of hypergroups with small parameters, and continues with a closer look at the role of involutions (modeled after the definition of group-theoretic involutions) within the theory of hypergroups. Hypergroups generated by involutions lead to the exchange condition (a genuine generalization of the group-theoretic exchange condition), and this condition defines the so-called Coxeter hypergroups. Coxeter hypergroups can be treated in a similar way to Coxeter groups. On the other hand, their regular actions are mathematically equivalent to buildings (in the sense of Jacques Tits). A similar equivalence is discussed for twin buildings. The primary audience for the monograph will be researchers working in Algebra and/or Algebraic Combinatorics, in particular on association schemes.
Dyson–Schwinger Equations, Renormalization Conditions, and the Hopf Algebra of Perturbative Quantum Field Theory
This book offers a systematic introduction to the Hopf algebra of renormalization in quantum field theory, with a special focus on physical motivation, the role of Dyson–Schwinger equations, and the renormalization group. All necessary physical and mathematical constructions are reviewed and motivated in a self-contained introduction. The main part of the book concerns the interplay between Dyson–Schwinger equations (DSEs) and renormalization conditions. The book is explicit and consistent about whether a statement is true in general or only in particular renormalization schemes or approximations and about the dependence of quantities on regularization parameters or coupling constants. With over 600 references, the original literature is cited whenever possible and the book contains numerous references to other works discussing further details, generalizations, or alternative approaches. There are explicit examples and remarks to make the connection from the scalar fields at hand toQED and QCD. The book is primarily targeted at the mathematically oriented physicist who seeks a systematic conceptual overview of renormalization, Hopf algebra, and DSEs. These may be graduate students entering the field as well as practitioners seeking a self-contained account of the Hopf algebra construction. Conversely, the book also benefits the mathematician who is interested in the physical background of the exciting interplay between Hopf algebra, combinatorics and physics that is renormalization theory today.

The present text is an introduction to the theory of association schemes. We start with the de?nition of an association scheme (or a scheme as we shall say brie?y), and in order to do so we ?x a set and call it X. We write 1 to denote the set of all pairs (x,x) with x? X. For each subset X ? r of the cartesian product X×X, we de?ne r to be the set of all pairs (y,z) with (z,y)? r.For x an element of X and r a subset of X× X, we shall denote by xr the set of all elements y in X with (x,y)? r. Let us ?x a partition S of X×X with?? / S and 1 ? S, and let us assume X ? that s ? S for each element s in S. The set S is called a scheme on X if, for any three elements p, q,and r in S, there exists a cardinal number a such pqr ? that|yp?zq| = a for any two elements y in X and z in yr. pqr The notion of a scheme generalizes naturally the notion of a group, and we shall base all our considerations on this observation. Let us, therefore, brie?y look at the relationship between groups and schemes.

The primary object of the lecture notes is to develop a treatment of association schemes analogous to that which has been so successful in the theory of finite groups. The main chapters are decomposition theory, representation theory, and the theory of generators. Tits buildings come into play when the theory of generators is developed. Here, the buildings play the role which, in group theory, is played by the Coxeter groups. - The text is intended for students as well as for researchers in algebra, in particular in algebraic combinatorics.
