Exploring Contemporary Migration provides the first comprehensive introduction to the various aspects of population migration in both the developed and the developing worlds. Some of the most important quantitative and qualitative methods used for the description and analysis of migration are presented in a clearly structured and accessible way. The various theoretical approaches used to explain the complex patterns of migration are also summarised. These patterns are then explored through the use of specific migration-related themes: employment, stage in the life course, quality of life, societal engineering, violence and persecution, and the role of culture.Exploring Contemporary Migration is written in a user-friendly, accessible style, appealing to undergraduate students of population geography and social science students taking a population module. This text will also be valuable reading to those researchers and academics concerned with gaining a broad understanding of the dynamics and patterns of contemporary population.

Arguments to Prove the Being of God. With Objections Against it, Answer'd. Being Several Sermons Preach'd at the Cathedral-Church of St. Paul, in the Year 1706. on Account of the Lecture Founded by the Honourable Robert Boyle, Esq
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Paul Robeson

Paul Robeson

This is a compelling biography of a great American in his formative years. The son of a former slave, Paul Robeson (1898-1976) rose to become an All-American athlete, Phi Beta Kappa student, internationally celebrated singer and actor, and champion of racial equality. Yet, despite his courage and many accomplishments, he could not overcome the combined effects of racism and McCarthyism. He was forced to live his last years in internal exile under FBI surveillance, without the respect he deserved. This massively researched biography takes Robeson from his humble beginnings in rural New Jersey to international fame on the eve of World War II. It presents a fully rounded picture - a portrait that corrects, supplements, and revises previous work on Robeson and his circle.
The Chemical Philosophy of Robert Boyle

The Chemical Philosophy of Robert Boyle

Marina Paola Banchetti-Robino

Oxford University Press Inc
2020
sidottu
Robert Boyle (1627-1691) believed that a reductionist conception of the mechanical philosophy threatened the heuristic power and autonomy of chemistry as an experimental science. While some historical and philosophical scholars have examined his nuanced position, understanding the chemical philosophy he developed through his own experimental work is incredibly difficult even for experts in the field. In The Chemical Philosophy of Robert Boyle, Marina Paola Banchetti-Robino energetically explains Boyle's ideas in a whole new light and proposes that Boyle regarded chemical qualities as non-reducible dispositional and relational properties that emerge from, and supervene upon, the mechanistic structure of chymical atoms. Banchetti-Robino demonstrates that these ideas are implicit in Boyle's writing, making his philosophical contributions crucial to the fields of both philosophy and chemistry. The arguments presented are further strengthened by a detailed mereological analysis of Boylean chymical atoms as chemically elementary entities, which establishes the theory of wholes and parts that is most consistent with an emergentist conception of chemical properties. More generally, this book examines the way in which Boyle sought to accommodate his complex chemical philosophy within the framework of the 17th century mechanistic theory of matter. Banchetti-Robino conceptualizes Boyle's experimental work as a scientific research programme, in the Lakatosian sense, to better explain the positive and negative heuristic function of the mechanistic theory of matter within his chemical philosophy. The Chemical Philosophy of Robert Boyle actively engages with the contemporary and lively debates over the nature of Boyle's ideas about structural chemistry, fundamental mechanistic particles and properties, the explanatory power of subordinate causes, the complex relation between fundamental particles, natural kinds, and unified chemical wholes. The book is a rich historical account that begins with the dominant paradigms of 16th and 17th Century chemical philosophy and takes readers all the way through to the 21st Century.
Understanding T. C. Boyle

Understanding T. C. Boyle

Paul Gleason

University of South Carolina Press

This is the first critical companion to the works of this darkly comic short story writer and novelist. ""Understanding T. C. Boyle"" is the first book-length study of one of contemporary America's most prolific, popular, and critically acclaimed fiction writers. The author of seven short story collections and eleven novels, T. C. Boyle has been honored with the 1988 PEN/Faulkner Award for ""World's End"", the 1997 Prix Medicis Etranger for ""The Tortilla Curtain"", the 1999 PEN/Malamud Award for ""T. C. Boyle: Stories"", and a 2003 National Book Award nomination for ""Drop City"". Boyle's 1993 novel, ""The Road to Wellville"", was adapted into a feature film. Paul Gleason begins his investigation of Boyle's work by exploring the biographical, historical, and literary contexts at play in the writer's fiction. Gleason maps the literary influences that shaped Boyle's 'wise guy' style, among them Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Flannery O'Connor, Raymond Carver, and Samuel Beckett. The volume then features chapters on Boyle's short fiction and his novels of the past three decades. Gleason demonstrates Boyle's literary development as entertainer, absurdist, social commentator and critic, and historical novelist who chronicles the baby boomer generation while addressing a range of contemporary social issues, such as race relations, illegal immigration, and feminism. Gleason shows how Boyle uses dark humor as a moral and satiric force for social commentary in the tradition of writers such as Charles Dickens and Mark Twain. Though the entertainment value of Boyle's writing has much to do with his popularity, Gleason also sees him as an iconoclast who questions his generation's ideals, philosophies, and actions.

Biblical prophecy clearly foretells that life here on earth as we now know it is coming to an end. It will be the final chapter in a conflict between God and Satan that originated at the beginning of time when God created a perfect kingdom and placed man in it. Satan entered the kingdom and influenced the man to sin. As a result the perfect kingdom become corrupt and Satan gained control. In the end God will defeat Satan and restore His kingdom to its original perfection. The Scriptures give a detailed account of how this will happen and how those living at the time will be caught up in the cataclysmic process.A Place in the Woods offers an exciting tale of survival. The story follows the lives of three couples as they face those devastating events. The book is fiction, but it offers a thought-provoking account based on actual Biblical prophecy. As with all of the author's books, A Place in the Woods can be enjoyed by readers of all ages beginning with early teens.

If one were to ask the average American of today to describe their impressions of the 1960's they might talk about a time of dissention and unrest... a time of hopelessness... a time of war abroad and assassinations at home.... Quite possibly it would be seen as a time of trouble... or a time of darkness.... Supporting evidence would substantiate all of those thoughts. But the 1960's era was also a time of great promise and accomplishment--on July 20, 1969 our nation achieved the goal set by President John F. Kennedy, of, "landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth."Come along as prolific author, Paul Boyce, recreates those events--telling the story as only one with first hand knowledge can...much of the content of this work was seen through his own eyes. Learn how a group of dedicated people from the Government, Military and Industry were able to transform President Kennedy's challenge from a seemingly impossible dream into a reality in little more than eight years. Moon Shotwill strengthen your pride in our great nation as you follow the events of what mayarguably be the most noble and significant achievement of all time.

On April 21st 1701, Yazama Jiutar , a young Japanese samurai is devastated when he and his fellow warriors are informed of the ritual suicide of their master in punishment for a severe offence. The warriors are now ronin - masterless and on the run - but they vow vengeance on the court official whom they blame, promising to return in force at the New Year, December 31st 1702. They know that their revenge, no matter how justified, will only lead to their own deaths by the same ritual suicide. The band separates and scatters and Jiutar heads south. As he crosses the sea from the main island of Honshu to that of Kyushu, his boat is hit by a tempest. When the storm abates he finds himself in a world populated by races and species of peoples familiar, strange and terrifying. Believing himself to be in one of the hells he has heard of in myths, theatre and stories, he knows he has to find a way back to the home he is far away from.
