Samaan aikaan paikallisen hotellin vieras katoaa, ja hotellissa hermolomaa viettävä maineikas edinburghilainen rikostutkija Carlos saa heittää hyvästit viskintuoksuisille lomasuunnitelmilleen. Hotellin keittiössä työskentelevä, Skotlannin jylhiin maisemiin hurmaantunut Halla on perehtynyt klaanihistoriaan ja päätyy auttamaan poliisia. Gini - kuningatarten ja katunaisten juoma on historiankirja nykyajan nautiskelijoille. Teos kertoo ginin tarinan aina juoman alkulähteiltä moderneihin artesaanitislaamoihin. Teoksen sivuilla vieraillaan keskiaikaisissa munkkiluostareissa, Pariisin alkemistien kammioissa, Hollannin Kauppakomppanian ruumissa ja 1700-luvun alun Lontoossa, missä leipääkin halvempi gini aiheutti modernin aikakauden ensimmäisen huumeaallon - gini onkin maailmanhistorian ainoa tuote, joka on kohonnut rappiota kylväneestä nautintoaineesta salonkikelpoiseksi piristeeksi. Lontoon ginissä kylpevien sivukatujen jälkeen teos seuraa kitkerän suloisen juoman kehitystä ikonisten drinkkien, kuten gin tonicin ja martinin, ainesosiksi, ja pujahtaa 1900-luvun alun metropolien salakapakoihin, kunnes saapuu nykypäivän pirskahtelevan kukoistavan ginikulttuurin äärelle.Historiallisen ginimatkan lisäksi teos tarjoaa tietoa erilaisista ginityypeistä sekä vinkkejä maailman parhaisiin ginilöytöihin.Paula Hotti on Berliinissä asuva kirjailija ja matkajournalisti. Häneltä on ilmestynyt suomennoksia matkakirjallisuuden klassikoista, matkaopas Dubliniin sekä matkajuttuja suomalaisessa ja brittiläisessä mediassa.

Mustien syntien kahvilaesseissä kuljeskellaan kaupunkien kaduilla, vieraillaan historiallisissa kahviloissa ja nautitaan tunnelmallisista kupposista eri puolilla Eurooppaa, myös Suomessa. Teoksessa kerrotaan kahvilakulttuurin historiasta papujen löytymisestä kahviloiden syntyyn ja niiden leviämiseen ensin Lähi- idässä ja sitten Euroopassa. Kupponen kahvia on arjen sulostuttaja, tauko rutiineista, josta on lupa nauttia yksin tai seurassa, kaikessa rauhassa.

Hurmaava hyvänmielen rikossarja tarjoilee murhia, perhesalaisuuksia ja taivaallisen hyvää ruokaa. Suomalaiskokki Halla valmistautuu ystävien kokoontumiseen skotlantilaisella kartanolla, joka sijaitsee omassa rauhassaan pienellä saarella. Lähin kylä on idyllisestä rantakadustaan ja herkullisista leivonnaisistaan tunnettu Lochinver. Kun paikallinen yrittäjä löytyy murhattuna, Hallan poliisiystävät Kieran ja Carlos saavat heittää hyvästit vapaalle viikonlopulle. Mitä on meneillään piirakkapuodissa ja läheisen kahvilan yläkerrassa? Saavatko he murhaajan kiinni ennen kuin ruumiita tulee lisää? Myös Florian McGowanin yllättävä paluu Skotlantiin herättää kysymyksiä. Mikä ajoi porsaan kotiin?

Artisans, Objects and Everyday Life in Renaissance Italy

Artisans, Objects and Everyday Life in Renaissance Italy

Did ordinary Italians have a ‘Renaissance’? This book presents the first in-depth exploration of how artisans and small local traders experienced the material and cultural Renaissance. Drawing on a rich blend of sixteenth-century visual and archival evidence, it examines how individuals and families at artisanal levels (such as shoemakers, barbers, bakers and innkeepers) lived and worked, managed their household economies and consumption, socialised in their homes, and engaged with the arts and the markets for luxury goods. It demonstrates that although the economic and social status of local craftsmen and traders was relatively low, their material possessions show how these men and women who rarely make it into the history books were fully engaged with contemporary culture, cultural customs and the urban way of life. There is a focus on Renaissance Siena, a city that is rarely included in studies of the Italian Renaissance.

Paul Petricca draws on his experience as a coach, player, blogger, and student of baseball and softball to share what he's learned about hitting in this essential guide for players seeking dramatic results at the plate. The author presents easy to understand hitting mechanics highlighting how the engineering concept of torque can be applied to hitting and is often the difference between a weak groundball or a long home run. Topics covered include understanding where hitting power really comes from and the importance of increasing bat speed through the fundamentals of a repeatable and powerful rotational swing. Hitters of all ages who adopt his eight hitting keys will enjoy a dramatic increase in bat speed and power almost immediately. Hitting with Torque is more than a set of hitting mechanics---it's a mindset. Readers will be challenged to look past the worn-out hitting theories and myths that have been holding back hitters from reaching their full potential. With an open mind and practice, all hitters can unlock the power and consistency that is Hitting with Torque.
