Applied Mathematics for the Analysis of Biomedical Data
Features a practical approach to the analysis of biomedical data via mathematical methods and provides a MATLAB® toolbox for the collection, visualization, and evaluation of experimental and real-life data Applied Mathematics for the Analysis of Biomedical Data: Models, Methods, and MATLAB® presents a practical approach to the task that biological scientists face when analyzing data. The primary focus is on the application of mathematical models and scientific computing methods to provide insight into the behavior of biological systems. The author draws upon his experience in academia, industry, and government–sponsored research as well as his expertise in MATLAB to produce a suite of computer programs with applications in epidemiology, machine learning, and biostatistics. These models are derived from real–world data and concerns. Among the topics included are the spread of infectious disease (HIV/AIDS) through a population, statistical pattern recognition methods to determine the presence of disease in a diagnostic sample, and the fundamentals of hypothesis testing. In addition, the author uses his professional experiences to present unique case studies whose analyses provide detailed insights into biological systems and the problems inherent in their examination. The book contains a well-developed and tested set of MATLAB functions that act as a general toolbox for practitioners of quantitative biology and biostatistics. This combination of MATLAB functions and practical tips amplifies the book’s technical merit and value to industry professionals. Through numerous examples and sample code blocks, the book provides readers with illustrations of MATLAB programming. Moreover, the associated toolbox permits readers to engage in the process of data analysis without needing to delve deeply into the mathematical theory. This gives an accessible view of the material for readers with varied backgrounds. As a result, the book provides a streamlined framework for the development of mathematical models, algorithms, and the corresponding computer code. In addition, the book features: Real–world computational procedures that can be readily applied to similar problems without the need for keen mathematical acumenClear delineation of topics to accelerate access to data analysisAccess to a book companion website containing the MATLAB toolbox created for this book, as well as a Solutions Manual with solutions to selected exercises Applied Mathematics for the Analysis of Biomedical Data: Models, Methods, and MATLAB® is an excellent textbook for students in mathematics, biostatistics, the life and social sciences, and quantitative, computational, and mathematical biology. This book is also an ideal reference for industrial scientists, biostatisticians, product development scientists, and practitioners who use mathematical models of biological systems in biomedical research, medical device development, and pharmaceutical submissions.

This book provides a concise but thorough introduction to partial differential equations which model phenomena that vary in both space and time. The author begins with a full explanation of the fundamental linear partial differential equations of physics. The text continues with methods to understand and solve these equations leading ultimately to the solutions of Maxwell’s equations. The author then addresses nonlinearity and provides examples of separation of variables, linearizing change of variables, inverse scattering transform, and numerical methods for select nonlinear equations. Next, the book presents rich sources of advanced techniques and strategies for the study of nonlinear partial differential equations. This second edition includes updates, additional examples, and a new chapter on reaction–diffusion equations. Ultimately, this book is an essential resource for readers in applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering who are interested in learning about the myriad techniques that have been developed to model and solve linear and nonlinear partial differential equations.

This text provides an introduction to the applications and implementations of partial differential equations. The content is structured in three progressive levels which are suited for upper–level undergraduates with background in multivariable calculus and elementary linear algebra (chapters 1–5), first– and second–year graduate students who have taken advanced calculus and real analysis (chapters 6-7), as well as doctoral-level students with an understanding of linear and nonlinear functional analysis (chapters 7-8) respectively. Level one gives readers a full exposure to the fundamental linear partial differential equations of physics. It details methods to understand and solve these equations leading ultimately to solutions of Maxwell’s equations. Level two addresses nonlinearity and provides examples of separation of variables, linearizing change of variables, and the inverse scattering transform for select nonlinear partial differential equations. Level three presents rich sources of advanced techniques and strategies for the study of nonlinear partial differential equations, including unique and previously unpublished results. Ultimately the text aims to familiarize readers in applied mathematics, physics, and engineering with some of the myriad techniques that have been developed to model and solve linear and nonlinear partial differential equations.

Recent explorations in the neurosciences have been progressing towards an understanding of the relationship between brain struc ture and brain function. Having passed through an era which may be described as one of a localisationist philosophy, in which discrete brain areas were seen to subserve only discrete functions, the perspective of brain-behaviour relationships has advanced in recent years to an appreciation that a more holistic approach is not only heuristically valid, but is also most likely to lead to future advances. The close relationship between the mind and the brain has been appreciated since the time of Hippocrates when he opined 'men ought to know that from nothing else but thence [from the brain] comes joys, delights, laughter and sports, and sorrows, griefs, despondency and lamentations ... and by this same organ we become mad and delirious and fears and terrors assail us'. In the nineteenth century, particularly in France and Germany, descrip tions of what are now recognised to be independent neurological diseases emerged following empirical clinical observations. Investi gation led to the identification in many cases of underlying struc tural abnormalities which could be linked to pathological changes.
