Geography and Japan's Strategic Choices

Geography and Japan's Strategic Choices

Geography, this author contends, is the indisputably unique feature of any country. Geography and Japan's Strategic Choices begins by explaining Japan's unique location and topography in comparison to other countries. Peter Woolley then examines the ways in which the country's political leaders in various eras understood and acted on those geographical limitations and advantages. Proceeding chronologically through several distinct political eras, the book compares the Tokugawa era, the opening to the West, the Meiji Restoration, the long era of colonialization, industrialization and liberalization, the militarist reaction and World War II, the occupation, the Cold War, and finally the rudderless fin de siecle. Finally Woolley demonstrates how Japan's strategic situation in the twenty-first century is informed by past and present geo-strategic calculations as well as by current domestic and international changes. For students and scholars of U.S.-Japan relations and of Japanese history and politics, this book offers any informed reader a fresh perspective on a critical international relationship.

"I am convinced that the true collector does not acquire objects of art for himself alone. His is no selfish drive or desire to have and hold a painting, a sculpture, or a fine example of antique furniture so that only he may see and enjoy it. Appreciating the beauty of the object, he is willing and even eager to have others share his pleasure." -J. Paul Getty, The Joys of Collecting, 1965 Rooted in a passion for the Italian Renaissance as well as Dutch and Flemish Baroque works, the original collection of J. Paul Getty (1892-1976) has been transformed over four decades to include seminal pieces by celebrated masters such as Masaccio, Titian, Parmigianino, Cranach, El Greco, Rubens, van Dyck, Rembrandt, Poussin, Canaletto, Fragonard, Turner, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Monet, van Gogh, Cezanne, and Ensor. Masterpiece Paintings in the J. Paul Getty Museum surveys more than one hundred of the most exquisite and significant paintings displayed in the museum's famed, daylight-suffused galleries. Vibrant full-colour illustrations and engaging descriptions of these masterworks reveal their fascinating histories and cultural, social, and religious meanings. Sure to enchant and edify all art lovers, this book is a spellbinding tour through the history of Western painting.

Peter Debye was a brilliant teacher and great communicator, who could get along with people from all layers of society. Born in The Netherlands, he studied in Germany and thereafter held teaching and research positions in Germany (Munich, Göttingen, Leipzig and Berlin), Switzerland (Zurich University and ETH), The Netherlands (Utrecht), and the USA (Cornell University). He was a pioneer in many different fields of chemistry and physics, such as the theory of strong electrolytes, the theory of molecular dipoles, low temperature physics, intermolecular forces, solid-state physics, X-ray analysis, molecular weight determination of polymers, and scattering studies with X-rays and light. As a result, he bridged in the first part of the 20th century the gap that existed between chemistry and physics and contributed to the emerging field of chemical physics. This book presents both an in-depth overview of Debye's many pathbreaking scientific achievements, and a full and balanced account of his professional life, against the background of major events in world history, such as the First and the Second World Wars. Until 1939 Debye lived and worked in Europe, and from 1940 to his death in 1966 in the USA. The story of his USA years is completely new, and has been written on the basis of Debye's personal archive. In the chapter the 'Debye affair' — about his last two years in Nazi Germany — which attracted much publicity during 2006-2010, is described in detail and put in the larger context of Debye's life and character. This book is richly illustrated, with many rather unknown photographs.
