China: After the Typhoon: Revised and Updated Second Edition
I've revised and updated the first edition to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Tiananmen Square, the bleeding heart of the nation. I concentrate on the period from the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976 to the massacre in 1989. Instead of a dull, factual historical account, I try to present the atmosphere and colour of Chinese daily life, from early morning tai chi and dim sum to Cantonese opera, snake dinners and ox penis soup. However, I don't gloss over the seamy side: forbidden love, false arrests, forced abortions and public executions. China is presented in all its bewildering complexity -- not only the "Chinese Dream" but also the "Chinese Nightmare". Just what is myth and what is reality?

For the first time, the books in the trilogy are now available all together and in print after appearing separately on Kindle (I have made some minor modifications). In The Girl with the Fish Tattoo, Morose is enlisted to help investigate a series of terrorist bombings which have led to anti-Muslim riots and a right-wing nationalist backlash. Everyone assumes a political explanation but Morose is less convinced. And just how does the sexy biker girl with the piranha tattoo fit in? The Girl who Swam with Sharks represents an exotic interlude from the political thriller style of the other two books and is more like a traditional whodunit. Morose travels to Thailand to rescue his older brother Endeavour who has been arrested and accused of helping his young Thai girlfriend murder her rich American husband. Finally, in The Girl who Cried Wolf, Morose is recalled from exile in Iceland to defuse the Croydon Missile Crisis. After refusing to cooperate with rendition and extradition, Uncle Kenny, who is seeking re-election as Prime Minister after four years in office, is threatened with rogue drone missiles by the American Ambassador. What should Kenny do with Julian St. James, the founder of the radical FidelNews.com website, who has leaked top secret US military documents and is accused of raping a student in Sweden? Also, can Morose solve the curious incident of the wolf which did not howl in the night? At least Morose is not alone and is ably assisted by his trusty sergeant, Louise, by the ambiguous founder of Manchester's No. 1 Transsexuals' Detective Agency, Eddie, and by the lovable Icelandic Criminology student, D ra.

For this second revised edition, I have updated some of the content, added some new material and corrected a few typing errors. After the plethora of Zen-related titles in recent years, Zen and the Art of Table Tennis seeks to examine links which up to now have been largely ignored - the links between this ancient Eastern lifestyle and a game noted for its combination of mental and physical agility. Part One explores the nature of Zen, analysing those aspects which seem to appeal most to Western followers. Part Two traces the history of table tennis from its humble parlour-game beginnings to the rise and dominance of Asia. Part Three attempts to reach a synthesis - does table tennis have anything to learn from Zen? Finally, an eleventh chapter ventures into a danger zone which other Western Zen publications tend to avoid - into Zen's moral vacuum. The enlightened wisdom of Obi-Wan Kenobi is counterbalanced by the dark force of Darth Vader, a dark side which manifested itself historically in Zen Nazis and Zen war-time atrocities.

For this revised, updated paperback edition (August 2021), I have corrected a few mistakes and added some new material. It can be read as a standalone or as book 1 in the D ra the Detective Trilogy or book 4 in the Inspector Morose Series.Frustrated at the low murder-rate in Iceland, D ra leaps at the opportunity to participate in a six-month job swap in Malta as part of a new UNESCO cultural exchange programme ("The Inter-Islands Initiative"). Having vowed never to be separated from D ra again and not averse to some hot weather, Morose tags along with the twins, Elegy and Embalmer. D ra is hoping to find herself a nice juicy murder in sundrenched Malta which is conveniently situated at the crossroads of international crime with its French, Libyan and Sicilian connections. Soon, she is helping her boss, Inspector Deboneo of the Maltese CID, an original but eccentric thinker, solve the murders of two single mature female tourists. Will they be able to catch the Bugibba Strangler before the serial killer destroys the Maltese tourist industry? And has poor old Morose been left on the sidelines holding the babies?

Ciao My name is Adrian but my footballing friends call me Adriano. Bit of a geek at times but I have a sweeter left foot than Adrian Mole and I'm not a frigging loser like Billy Casper. An ordinary comprehensive is where I am studying in Year 11 for my GCSEs (Ms. said I should vary my sentence structures). I invite you, my honoured readers, to enjoy this tantalising tale of my colourful career in junior football. Also, I can't help talking about my wicked English lessons with the magnificent Ms. 34D. Although someone made the big mistake of assigning her a massive class brimming with teenage boys and testosterone, she can control all 28 of us just with her top buttons. If you want to find out more, you will have to beg, borrow or steal some pennies and invest in my marvellous masterpiece Yours, in football, Adriano.

The Dandy

The Dandy

A history of the dandy from below, from Beau Brummell and Baudelaire to Bowie and Bolan... and beyond. The historical figure of the dandy has commonly been described as an upper-class gentleman, often exemplified by well-known men such as Beau Brummell, Charles Baudelaire, Oscar Wilde, and Max Beerbohm. But there is a broader history to be told about the dandy - one that incorporates unknown men from the lower strata of society. The Dandy: A People's History constitutes the first ever history of those dandies who emanated from the less privileged layers of the populace - the lowly clerks, shop assistants, domestic servants, and labourers who increasingly during the modern age have emerged as style-conscious men about town. Peter Andersson shows that dandyism is far from just an elite phenomenon represented by famous poets and artists. He shows how dandyism as a popular youth subculture grew into an influential cultural movement, from the days of Beau Brummell in the early 19th century to the age of mods in the 1960s. A series of fascinating in-depth studies of the wide variety of dandy subcultures that have surfaced around the world in the last two centuries tell the story of how the shaping of fashions and the image of men became increasingly democratized, with the arbiters of taste increasingly coming from the other end of the social spectrum. Along the way, we encounter such long-forgotten groups as the mashers, the knuts, the Paris gandins and the Berlin transgender dandies, alongside more well-known but unexplored figures like the zoot suiter, the teddy boy, and the New Romantic. Above all, this is a story of how fundamental aspects of modern culture such as fashion, style, and conduct have been shaped from below just as much as from above. It is a story that shows how the problematic business of young men trying to find an identity is an enduring phenomenon - and one sadly often accompanied by innocent victims along the way.

Adolescence is a turbulent period to live through, and a time of importance and concern to parents, teachers, and social workers. Marking the transition from the world of childhood to adult life, the adolescent faces many challenges and opportunities, including forming their own identity, relating to often conflicting demands from parents and peers, and negotiating first romantic relationships. In this Very Short Introduction, Peter K. Smith provides an engaging and informative overview of what we know and what we are learning about adolescence. Including both a guide to the classical research that has informed our knowledge, as well as the results of the modern research into the contemporary adolescent experience, Smith examines a number of aspects of adolescence, including the cultural and historical context, the biological changes to the adolescent brain, and the controversies that adolescence brings. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Why, even in the same high-crime neighborhoods, do robbery, drug dealing, and assault occur much more frequently on some blocks than on others? One popular theory is that a weak sense of community among neighbors can create conditions more hospitable for criminals, and another proposes that neighborhood disorder - such as broken windows and boarded-up buildings - makes crime more likely. But in his innovative new study, Peter K. B. St. Jean argues that we cannot fully understand the impact of these factors without considering that, because urban space is unevenly developed, different kinds of crimes occur most often in locations that offer their perpetrators specific advantages. Drawing on Chicago Police Department statistics and extensive interviews with both law-abiding citizens and criminals in one of the city's highest-crime areas, St. Jean demonstrates that drug dealers and robbers, for example, are primarily attracted to locations with businesses like liquor stores, fast food restaurants, and check-cashing outlets. By accounting for these important factors of spatial positioning, he expands upon previous research to provide the most comprehensive explanation available of why crime occurs where it does.
