This is an historical commentary on Books 55-56 of Dio's Roman History. These books recount the last half of the reign of the Emperor Augustus, above all his orchestration of the first imperial succession. Addressed to both students and scholars, the new commentary is the first since the eighteenth century to offer full and fresh treatment of this segment of Dio's work.

A NEW Space Transportation Paradigm has emerged. Ideas brought forward in this report are presented in clear and understandable ways, although a revolutionary concept is becoming real. The envisioned cooperative and collaborative operations between rockets and space elevators will benefit mankind into the next century. 1- Space Elevators can be accomplished because there is a material for the tether, 2- Space Elevators are Earth Friendly, and 3- Space Elevators ENABLE Interplanetary Missions with: o Fast Transit to Mars (as short as 61 days, with variations out to 400+) o Can release towards Mars EVERY day (no 26 month wait) o Can move massive amounts of cargo (170,000 Metric tonnes/year to GEO and beyond)

Running on Empty: Along an Epic 12,000-Mile Road Trip, America Has Its Say on Economic Inequality
In his vivid descriptive style, prize-winning author Peter H. Michael recounts his classic 12,000-mile road trip taking in the expansive variety of people and places of the United States. Michael set out not to fathom the country "in search of America" as Steinbeck, Kerouac and Least Heat-Moon had but to listen and let America tell him whatever it might. Tell it did. Michael listens to Americans finally awakening to the income and wealth gaps which over the past generation have eroded the middle class and hit the poor hardest of all. In clear punchy style, he demolishes plutocrat arguments in an eminently readable expos on how the super-rich and largest corporations purchase economic inequality.
Operational Weather Forecasting

Operational Weather Forecasting

This book offers a complete primer, covering the end-to-end process of forecast production, and bringing together a description of all the relevant aspects together in a single volume; with plenty of explanation of some of the more complex issues and examples of current, state-of-the-art practices. Operational Weather Forecasting covers the whole process of forecast production, from understanding the nature of the forecasting problem, gathering the observational data with which to initialise and verify forecasts, designing and building a model (or models) to advance those initial conditions forwards in time and then interpreting the model output and putting it into a form which is relevant to customers of weather forecasts. Included is the generation of forecasts on the monthly-to-seasonal timescales, often excluded in text-books despite this type of forecasting having been undertaken for several years. This is a rapidly developing field, with a lot of variations in practices between different forecasting centres. Thus the authors have tried to be as generic as possible when describing aspects of numerical model design and formulation. Despite the reliance on NWP, the human forecaster still has a big part to play in producing weather forecasts and this is described, along with the issue of forecast verification – how forecast centres measure their own performance and improve upon it. Advanced undergraduates and postgraduate students will use this book to understand how the theory comes together in the day-to-day applications of weather forecast production. In addition, professional weather forecasting practitioners, professional users of weather forecasts and trainers will all find this new member of the RMetS Advancing Weather and Climate series a valuable tool. Provides an end-to-end description of the weather forecasting processClearly structured and pitched at an accessible level, the book discusses the practical choices that operational forecasting centres have to make in terms of what numerical models they use and when they are run.Takes a very practical approach, using real life case-studies to contextualize informationDiscusses the latest advances in the area, including ensemble methods, monthly to seasonal range prediction and use of ‘nowcasting’ tools such as radar and satellite imageryFull colour throughoutWritten by a highly respected team of authors with experience in both academia and practice.Part of the RMetS book series ‘Advancing Weather and Climate’

Number Story

Number Story

Numbers have fascinated people for centuries. They are familiar to everyone, forming a central pillar of our understanding of the world, yet the number system was not presented to us “gift-wrapped” but, rather, was developed over millennia. Peter Higgins distills centuries of work into one delightful narrative that celebrates the mystery of numbers and explains how different kinds of numbers arose and why they are useful. Full of historical snippets and interesting examples, the book ranges from simple number puzzles and magic tricks, to showing how ideas about numbers relate to real-world problems, such as: How are our bank account details kept secure when shopping over the internet? What are the chances of winning at Russian roulette; or of being dealt a flush in a poker hand? As our understanding of numbers continues to evolve, this book invites us to rediscover the mystery and beauty of numbers and reminds us that the story of numbers is a tale with a long way to run...
