Daar is sinds de vorige eeuw gelukkig verandering in gekomen. Steeds duidelijker is geworden dat we Jezus alleen kunnen begrijpen als we hem zien als een joodse leraar in zijn tijd. Maar dat ook de evangelisten joodse schriftgeleerden waren, is minder bekend. Zij worden vaak nog gezien als degenen die de stap uit het jodendom hebben gezet en zich ertegen zijn gaan afzetten. Na alle nieuwe inzichten die de laatste decennia zijn ontstaan over het joodzijn van Jezus, vraagt dit boek vooral aandacht voor de evangelisten als joodse verhalenvertellers. In dit boek laat Peter van 't Riet zien dat ook de evangelisten, net als Jezus, door en door joods zijn geweest en er niet op uit waren een nieuwe godsdienst te stichten los van het jodendom. Behandeld worden de Hebreeuwse gedachtewereld van de evangelisten, de schriftelijke en mondelinge tradities waarvan zij gebruik maakten, het joodse leven in hun verhalen en de midrasjmethode waarmee zij hun verhalen schreven. Kritische bedenkingen bij de filosofie van Mao Zedong. Als Peter Van der Biest de hoofdwerken van Mao's filosofie stap voor stap ontrafelt, is het omdat de verschillen tussen het marxisme en de stalinistische vervormingen eraan niet altijd voor de hand liggen. Toch is dit geen schaduwgevecht met een gebalsemd lijk. De lezer zal ervaren dat de denkwijzen die Van der Biest vinnig, maar steeds wetenschappelijk en toch begrijpelijk beantwoordt, ons dagelijks leven meer bevolken dan men soms verwacht.
