Arthur Riordan, a sixteen-year-old college freshman and seventeen-year-old, high school senior Gale Flanagan are on a quest to find the killer of Fedor Majorski, Professor of Mythology at Utopia College. The professor's students refer to him as "Professor Magic," although they know nothing about his mastery of the magical arts. Arthur and his mother simply call him The Professor. Only Arthur even suspects Majorski's abilities. The Professor began mentoring Arthur at an early age, although with questionable success on the boy's part. When the Professor fails to return from a day trip to the Museum of Natural History in New York City, Arthur sets out to find him. Upon arriving in the city, he meets Gale. Her father runs a private eye business. The two teenagers join forces and, with a little help from her father, they discover the Professor's body.Gale and Arthur each bring different skills to their efforts to find the killer. Arthur, who grew up on a college campus, is na ve and totally lacking in street smarts. Gale, grew up and works in the city absorbing street smarts and storing them under her locks of red hair. Her access to her father and his detective agency are also useful. Arthur brings his tenacity to the team and his magic, spotty as it is, seems to work when it is needed most.Follow Arthur and Gale as they stumble from one adventure to another, determined to find the Professor's killer and bring him to justice.
Scribal Practice, Text and Canon in the Dead Sea Scrolls: Essays in Memory of Peter W. Flint
This volume contains 17 essays on the subjects of text, canon, and scribal practice. The volume is introduced by an overview of the Qumran evidence for text and canon of the Bible. Most of the text critical studies deal with texts from the Dead Sea Scrolls, including sectarian as well as canonical texts. Two essays shed light on the formation of authoritative literature. Scribal practice is illustrated in various ways, again mostly from the Dead Sea Scrolls. One essay deals with diachronic change in Qumran Hebrew. Rounding out the volume are two thematic studies, a wide-ranging study of the "ambiguous oracle" of Josephus, which he identifies as Balaam's oracle, and a review of the use of female metaphors for Wisdom.
Principles of Electron Optics, Volume 1

Principles of Electron Optics, Volume 1

Volume one of Principles of Electron Optics: Basic Geometrical Optics, Second Edition, explores the geometrical optics needed to analyze an extremely wide range of instruments: cathode-ray tubes; the family of electron microscopes, including the fixed-beam and scanning transmission instruments, the scanning electron microscope and the emission microscope; electron spectrometers and mass spectrograph; image converters; electron interferometers and diffraction devices; electron welding machines; and electron-beam lithography devices. The book provides a self-contained, detailed, modern account of electron optics for anyone involved with particle beams of modest current density in the energy range up to a few mega-electronvolts. You will find all the basic equations with their derivations, recent ideas concerning aberration studies, extensive discussion of the numerical methods needed to calculate the properties of specific systems and guidance to the literature of all the topics covered. A continuation of these topics can be found in volume two, Principles of Electron Optics: Applied Geometrical Optics. The book is intended for postgraduate students and teachers in physics and electron optics, as well as researchers and scientists in academia and industry working in the field of electron optics, electron and ion microscopy and nanolithography.

The Quantum Vacuum

The Quantum Vacuum

In modern physics, the classical vacuum of tranquil nothingness has been replaced by a quantum vacuum with fluctuations of measurable consequence. In The Quantum Vacuum, Peter Milonni describes the concept of the vacuum in quantum physics with an emphasis on quantum electrodynamics. He elucidates in depth and detail the role of the vacuum electromagnetic field in spontaneous emission, the Lamb shift, van der Waals, and Casimir forces, and a variety of other phenomena, some of which are of technological as well as purely scientific importance. This informative text also provides an introduction based on fundamental vacuum processes to the ideas of relativistic quantum electrodynamics and quantum field theory, including renormalization and Feynman diagrams. Experimental as well as theoreticalaspects of the quantum vacuum are described, and in most cases details of mathematical derivations are included. Chapter 1 of The Quantum Vacuum - published in advance in The American Journal of Physics (1991)-was later selected by readers as one of the Most Memorable papers ever published in the 60-year history of the journal. This chapter provides anexcellent beginning of the book, introducing a wealth of information of historical interest, the results of which are carefully woven into subsequent chapters to form a coherent whole.
