The Twelfth Strand is the story of an oddly incongruous love affair between two remarkable people, Henry Cadence and Eva Chakluak. It is also a kind of owner's manual for life on earth, offering an explanation for one of the most baffling mysteries of humankind. Exactly how, and perhaps more importantly, when did Homo Sapiens make their startlingly rapid, almost overnight, cultural leap from primitive, cave-dwelling, hunter-gatherers to intellectually advanced creators of complex architecture, art, science, and language? The answer lies in another question, a disarmingly simple question of The Twelfth Strand, 'What do you love'Henry Cadence was an astronaut in the late summer of 1969 who experienced a profoundly life-altering close encounter while onboard the moon-orbiting Apollo 11. He fell back to earth forever changed and possessing an uncanny relationship with the living spirits of machinery. Eva Chakluak, a recently-widowed Inuit woman now living in Homestead, Florida, having inherited a threadbare traveling circus from an abusive Russian husband, has need of a good mechanic. She hires Henry Cadence, a cheerfully accentric drifter, to keep her singular little world in good running repair. Its a love made in heaven. With only one slight problem. Henry, it seems, has this peculiar, and unpredictable tendency of slipping back into the deep river of distant time. Lately he's been to ancient Egypt, 1,300 years before the birth of Christ to be exact. The boy-king, Tutankhamen, has recently died, victim of some unknown disease, maybe choked on a peach pit, or perhaps even murdered by political rivals. The grieving Egyptians look to their Solar God for guidance, a god who appears unexpectedly from the desert, a god who seems to know things about the future, a god named Henry . . .

"So, gentle reader, open up this book, pick out a tale at random, doesn't matter which, and put your feet up on the old swaybacked sofa in this ancient tumbledown rose cottage at the end of the sandy lane. Listen. Outside the window, a summer nor'easter is brewing. The wind finds a shrill banshee voice. It rattles the shingles and mists hard, chill raindrops off the grey slop dancing out in the harbor...Listen. Thomas Woodbriar's calm baritone introduces you to his world, this tiny crescent of sanddune and beach plum and cobblestone, such a sweetly mad tempest in a cracked, old teapot, this Naugahide that he knows so intimately..." LONGLISTED FOR THE WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR PRIZE 'Terrific fun' David Walsh, Sunday Times * * 'Thoroughly engaging' Washington Post A frank and revealing biography of legendary golf champion Phil Mickelson - who has led a big, controversial life - as reported by longtime Sports Illustrated writer and bestselling author Alan Shipnuck. Phil Mickelson is one of the most compelling figures in sports. For more than three decades he has been among the best golfers in the world, and his unmatched longevity was exemplified at the 2021 PGA Championship, when Mickelson, on the cusp of turning fifty-one, became the oldest player in history to win a major championship. In this raw and unauthorised biography, Shipnuck captures a singular life defined by thrilling victories, crushing defeats and countless controversies. Mickelson is a multi-faceted character, and all his warring impulses are on display in these pages: he is a smart-ass who built an empire on being the consummate professional; a loving husband dogged by salacious rumours; a high-stakes gambler who knows the house always wins but can’t tear himself away. Mickelson’s career and public image have been defined by the contrast with his lifelong rival, Tiger Woods. Where Woods is robotic and reticent, Mickelson is affable and extroverted, an incorrigible showman. In their early years together on Tour, Mickelson lacked Tiger’s laser focus and discipline, yet as Tiger’s career has been curtailed by scandal, addiction and a broken body, Phil sails on, still relevant on the golf course and in the marketplace.Phil is the perfect marriage of subject and author. Shipnuck delivers numerous revelations, from the true scale of Mickelson’s massive gambling losses to the secretive backstory of the Saudi golf league that Mickelson championed. But Phil also celebrates Mickelson’s random acts of kindness and generosity of spirit, to which friends and strangers alike can attest. Shipnuck has covered Mickelson for his entire career, allowing him to take readers inside the ropes with a thrilling immediacy and intimacy. The result is the juiciest and liveliest golf book in years - full of heart, humour and unexpected turns.

This is a rich and many-faceted personal and business biography of the main figure in the third generation of Weyerhaeusers, who led the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company through the difficult and decisive years from 1933 to 1956.Although Phil Weyerhaeuser preferred to pass over the importance of his role, he was an industry leader and as such could not escape a large public duty. The years in which he served, from the 1920s tin the Inland Empire, and from 1933 to 1956 with the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company west of the Cascades, were years of great demands and change. Within his tenure the country experience the Great Depression and World War II, the reluctant acceptance by business of New Deal and Fair Deal legislation and bureaucratic requirements, and the adjustments occasioned by the managerial revolution. In the case of the Timber Company, the period witnessed its transition from what had been primarily a dealer in timberlands to an integrated manufacturer of forest products, from a liquidator of forest resources to a managers of tree farms designed to be perpetual in their providence.Phil oversaw his responsibilities to good purpose. His quiet style is of interest and so too are the effects of just being a Weyerhaeuser. The latter, of course, had much to do with his opportunities and also influenced the manner in which he conducted himself. But it was not without its liabilities, and the family relationships are an important element in the story. The most significant feature, however, has to do with the study of a period and a place and an industry through the experiences of a very special organization and its leadership. The study brings people and events into clearer focus and gives them added meaning. This is of particular importance in an industry so given to stereotyping and disapprobation. This well-written account reveals in detail the operation of a huge family enterprise, government-industry relations at a key time in United States history, labor relations, and efforts to expand and continually revitalize a large company--dependent on natural resources--over a period of half a century. Central to these efforts was Phil's conviction that the best way for a forest products company to operate was to own its own timberlands. he saw such holdings as necessary if the company was to engage in sustained-yield management. This biography draws extensively on primary sources--correspondence, family records, memoranda, and numerous interviews. It will be of interest to historians of the Pacific Northwest and the forest products industry, students of business history, and all readers interested in the development of a major American company.
