Performing Postracialism

Performing Postracialism

Blackface – instances in which non-Black persons temporarily darken their skin with make-up to impersonate Black people, usually for fun, and frequently in educational contexts – constitutes a postracialist pedagogy that propagates antiblack logics. In Performing Postracialism, Philip S.S. Howard examines instances of contemporary blackface in Canada and argues that it is more than a simple matter of racial (mis)representation. The book looks at the ostensible humour and dominant conversations around blackface, arguing that they are manifestations of the particular formations of antiblackness in the Canadian nation state and its educational institutions. It posits that the occurrence of blackface in universities is not incidental, and outlines how educational institutions’ responses to blackface in Canada rely upon a motivation to protect whiteness. Performing Postracialism draws from focus groups and individual interviews conducted with university students, faculty, administrators, and Black student associations, along with online articles about blackface, to provide the basis for a nuanced examination of the ways that blackface is experienced by Black persons. The book investigates the work done by Black students, faculty, and staff at universities to challenge blackface and the broader campus climate of antiblackness that generates it.

This selection of MCQs in rheumatology is largely aimed at MRCP candidates but some will be difficult for established rheumatologists and some will be possible for enthusiastic medical students. The format of the questions largely follows that used in the MRCP Part I examination with a few exceptions employing diagrams and assertion/reason questions (these are explained on p. vi). No gui dance on scoring is included since we feel that if an honest attempt is made at answering the question then the process is, in itself. educa tional. Some of the answers have been determined only after consider able discussion between us and as far as possible we have attempted to convey the views expressed in accepted British texts. Where answers seem contentious an appropriate reference has been given. Similarly the layout of the chapters largely follows that adopted by standard text books although the basic sciences have been incorpor ated within the individual chapters. We wish to thank Mrs. Dora Smith for typing and re-typing the manuscript according to the foibles of three different authors. Leeds, October 1988 P. S. Helliwell H. A. Bird V. Wright Assertion/Reason Questions These questions consist of two statements. The first statement is numbered 1 and the second is numbered 2. For example: 1. A positive family history of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is often found in patients with this disease. 2. There is an increased incidence of HLA-B27 antigen in patients with AS.

From the co-writer of ""John Winston Howard"", the definitive biography of the Prime Minister, comes ""After the Election"", which takes us behind the scenes of both parties on the announcement of the election campaign.Peter van Onselen and Phillip Senior have been offered unprecedented access into the Liberal and Labor camps as John Howard and Kevin Rudd prepare to fight the battles of their careers. In one camp is the most experienced politician in the country who has, since the start of 2007, faced some of the toughest opinion polls in his life; in the other is a rookie politician who seems unable to put a foot wrong. Will the combination of a jaded electorate and an 'it's time' mentality translate into success for the ALP on polling day?Whoever wins the election, and in the tradition of Pamela Williams' ""The Victory"", ""After the Election"" will chronicle, analyse and make sense of the result, and its far-reaching implications for the people of Australia.
Democracy's Fourth Wave?

Democracy's Fourth Wave?

Philip N. Howard; Muzammil M. Hussain

Oxford University Press Inc

In 2011, the international community watched as a shockingly unlikely community of citizens toppled three of the world's most entrenched dictators: Ben Ali in Tunisia, Mubarak in Egypt, and Qaddafi in Libya. This movement of cascading democratization, commonly known as the Arab Spring, was planned and executed not by political parties, but by students, young entrepreneurs, and the rising urban middle class. International experts and the popular press have pointed to the near-identical reliance on digital media in all three movements, arguing that these authoritarian regimes were in essence defeated by the Internet. Is that true? Should Mubarak blame Twitter for his sudden fall from power? Did digital media "cause" the Arab Spring? In Democracy's Fourth Wave?, Philip N. Howard and Muzammil M. Hussain examine the complex role of the Internet, mobile phones, and social networking applications in the Arab Spring. Examining digital media access, level of grievance, and levels of protest for popular democratization in 16 countries in the Middle East and North Africa, Howard and Hussain conclude that digital media was neither the most nor the least important cause of the Arab Spring. Instead, they illustrate a complex web of conjoined causal factors for social mobilization. The Arab revolts cascaded across countries largely because digital media allowed communities to realize shared grievances and nurtured transportable strategies for mobilizing against dictators. Individuals were inspired to protest for personal reasons, but through social media they acted collectively. Democracy's Fourth Wave examines not only the unexpected evolution of events during the Arab Spring, but the longer history of desperate-and creative-digital activism through the Arab world.

The Collapse of the Common Good: How America's Lawsuit Culture Undermines Our Freedom
In pursuit of fairness at any cost, we have created a society paralyzed by legal fear: Doctors are paranoid and principals powerless. Little league coaches, scared of liability, stop volunteering. Schools and hospitals start to crumble. The common good fades, replaced by a cacophony of people claiming their "individual rights." By turns funny and infuriating, this startling book dissects the dogmas of fairness that allow self-interested individuals to bully the rest of society. Philip K. Howard explains how, trying to honor individual rights, we removed the authority needed to maintain a free society. Teachers don't even have authority to maintain order in the classroom. With no one in charge, the safe course is to avoid any possible risk. Seesaws and diving boards are removed. Ridiculous warning labels litter the American landscape: "Caution: Contents Are Hot." Striving to protect "individual rights," we ended up losing much of our freedom. When almost any decision that someone disagrees with is a possible lawsuit, no one knows where he stands. A huge monument to the unknown plaintiff looms high above America, casting a dark shadow across our daily choices. Today, in the land of free speech, you'd have to be a fool to say what you really think. This provocative book not only attacks the sacred cows of political correctness, but takes a breathtakingly bold stand on how to reinvigorate our common good. Only by restoring personal authority can schools begin to work again. Only by judges and legislatures taking back the authority to decide who can sue for what can doctors feel comfortable using their best judgment and American be liberated to say and do what they know is right. Lucid, honest, and hard hitting, The Collapse of the Common Good shows how Americans can bring back freedom and common sense to a society disabled by lawyers and legal fear.
