In a career that spanned five decades, Elmer Iseler proved himself pivotal to the development of choral music in Canada. After founding Canada's first professional choir in 1954, he became artistic director and conductor of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir. In 1979 he established Canadas leading chamber choir, the Elmer Iseler Singers. He also enjoyed a long association with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, conducting more than 150 performances of Handels Messiah and premiering complex twentieth-century music. Under his baton, choirs achieved international stature for technical brilliance and artistic versatility. He has, in the estimation of many, created a vibrant, world-class choral infrastructure in Canada. The most decorated musician in Canada, honoured with many awards nationally and internationally, Iseler has made an impact that will continue undiminished through his many recordings, the Elmer Iseler Singers, the Elmer Iseler Chair in Conducting, and the Elmer Iseler National Graduate Fellowships in Choral Conducting at the University of Toronto.

Canadian composer Louis Applebaum devoted his life to the cultural awakening of his native land, and this "magnificent obsession" drove him to become a founder of the Canadian League of Composers and the Canadian Music Centre. He was an instrumental figure in the early development of the National Film Board, the Stratford Festival, and the National Art Centre in Ottawa. For nearly half a century he composed music for the Stratford Festival, television, radio, and films. This illustrated biography explores the man who was beloved by his fellow artists and the icon to whom every Canadian, knowingly or not, is indebted.

Victor Feldbrill is an account of the life and cultural contribution of one of Canada's most talented conductors. Born in 1924, he made his Toronto Symphony conducting debut at 18. He went on to become the artistic director of the Winnipeg Symphony, a conductor with the Toronto Symphony, and a guest conductor of virtually every major symphony orchestra in Canada. Feldbrill was also the first conductor-in-residence at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music from 1968 to 1982. However, what really set Feldbrill apart was his limitless enthusiasm and support of Canadian music and young musicians, as well as his insistence on playing the music of Canadian composers despite the reluctance of some orchestral managers and the initial opposition of audiences at the time. In doing so he reached out to young people and trained many to take their places as members of Canadian orchestras from coast to coast.
Noah's Flood: The New Scientific Discoveries about the Event That Changed History
Over the millennia, the legend of a great deluge has endured in the biblical story of Noah and in such Middle Eastern myths as the epic of Gilgamesh. Now two distinguished geophysicists have discovered a catastrophic event that changed history, a gigantic flood 7,600 years ago in what is today the Black Sea. Using sound waves and coring devices to probe the sea floor, William Ryan and Walter Pitman revealed clear evidence that this inland body of water had once been a vast freshwater lake lying hundreds of feet below the level of the world's rising oceans. Sophisticated dating techniques confirmed that 7,600 years ago the mounting seas had burst through the narrow Bosporus valley, and the salt water of the Mediterranean had poured into the lake with unimaginable force, racing over beaches and up rivers, destroying or chasing all life before it. The rim of the lake, which had served as an oasis, a Garden of Eden for farms and villages in a vast region of semi-desert, became a sea of death. The people fled, dispersing their languages, genes, and memories.

A novel of book lovers chased by madmen.Keith Clark's new girl had golden hair and eyes as gray as the North Sea in winter. Her name was Erika Johnson, and not only was she a real cutie, but she could also quote Robert Burns in the original Scots. Keith was very definitely in love with Erika, but there was one problem with their relationship-she categorically refused to meet with him outside the coffee shop where she worked. But everything changed for Keith and Erika when they were framed for a murder they didn't commit. Branded as outlaws, they must flee for their lives from their homes near Santa Barbara, California. They race across California by car and train-and on foot, when they must-as they try to keep one step ahead of the police and of the soldiers of the ruthless drug lord who framed them. The Fugitives Book Club is a tale of two fugitive lovers on the run, who fight to stay alive with everything they've got. They've got brains, they've got motivation, and they've got friends they can turn to for help. And if their friends won't help them willingly, then Keith and Erika have got the resolve to persuade them to change their minds.

The Civil War in 1861 found Southerners a minority throughout the West. Early efforts to create military forces were quickly suppressed. Many returned to the South to fight while others remained where they were, forming a potentially disloyal population. Underground movements existed throughout the war in Colorado, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona and even Idaho. Repeatedly betrayed and overwhelmed by Union forces and without communications with the South, these groups were ineffective. In southern New Mexico, Southerners, who were the majority, aligned themselves with the Confederacy. Four small companies of irregulars, one Hispanic, fought (effectively) as part of the abortive Confederate invasion force of 1861-2. The most famous of these, the "Brigands," were close in function to a modern special forces unit. In 1862 the Brigands were sent into Colorado to join up with a secret army of 600-1,000 men massing there, but were betrayed. Returning to Texas, the Brigands and the other irregulars were used for special operations in the West throughout the War; they also fought in the Louisiana-Arkansas campaigns of 1863-4.

Although the New Mexico Territory was far distant from the main theaters of war, it was engulfed in the same violence and bloodshed as the rest of the nation. The Civil War in New Mexico was fought in the deserts and mountains of the huge territory, which was mostly wilderness, amid the continuing ancient wars against the wild Indian tribes waged by both sides. The armies were small, but the stakes were high: control of the Southwest. Retired lieutenant colonel and Civil War historian Dr. Walter Earl Pittman presents this concise history of New Mexico during the Civil War years from the Confederate invasion of 1861 to the Battles of Valverde and Glorieta to the end of the war.

Pitman Shorthand Paper (UK)
There are a number of different shorthand systems (also known as stenography or steno). Pitman is popular in the UK (although a new system called 'Teeline' is rapidly gaining popularity there) while Gregg is the most common in the US. Shorthand systems are a way of writing using squiggles and abbreviations for speed and they may be based on spelling or phonetics. A trained shorthand writer is able to write as fast as people can speak which makes it ideal for taking dictation. Shorthand is still sometimes used by secretaries and secretarial schools but also by closed captioners, by court reporters and by journalists and news reporters. It may also have military and law enforcement use or be used by anyone else who has to take notes fast. 'Stenopads' or Steno paper is ruled down the center of the page to help the writer work quickly. Instead of using the full length of the book, they write in the first column to the middle line which saves time on their hand traveling across the whole line. Then they use the second column.

Pitman's Measure of Closeness (PMC) is simply an idea whose time has come. Certainly there are many different ways to estimate unknown parameters, but which method should you use? Posed as an alternative to the concept of mean-squared-error, PMC is based on the probabilities of the closeness of competing estimators to an unknown parameter. Renewed interest in PMC over the last 20 years has motivated the authors to produce this book, which explores this method of comparison and its usefulness. Written with research-oriented statisticians and mathematicians in mind, but also considering the needs of graduate students in statistics courses, this book provides a thorough introduction to the methods and known results associated with PMC. Following a foreword by C. R. Rao, the first three chapters focus on basic concepts, history, controversy, paradoxes and examples associated with the PMC criterion. The material is illustrated through realistic estimation problems and presented with a limited degree of technical difficulty. The last three chapters present a unified development of the extensive theoretical and mathematical research on PMC, albeit in the setup of a single parameter.Taken together, they serve as a single comprehensive source on this important topic. The text is highly referenced, allowing researchers to readily access the original articles. What lies ahead for PMC? This book begins to answer that question by presenting a unified discourse on this alternative criterion to traditional methods of comparison. Find out how the authors have begun to unravel the many attributes of PMC and their connections to other estimation criteria.
