Jan Geldenhuys was called up in October 1899 to serve in the Kroonstad Commando under Commandant Martinus Schoeman on the Western Front and deployed for the Siege of Kimberley. He fought at the Battles of Belmont, Graspan, Twee-Riviere (Modder River), Magersfontein and several other minor skirmishes. He was captured in April 1902 a mere two months before the end of the war] and banished as a prisoner of war to Umballa, India, where his experiences till Thursday, 20th November 1902, were documented. He shared a tent with his father-in-law and later met up with his father and brother who were POW's at Bhimtal. His diaries, written in high-Dutch, are lodged with the Anglo-Boer War museum in Bloemfontein. The author's grandmother, Lizzie Preller, having published her "Oorlogsherinneringe", provided the motivation and inspiration to research and to add this addition to African history. Jan Geldenhuys and Lizzie Preller were buried on Rustpan, the family farm between Bothaville and Kroonstad in the Orange Free State. The author followed his grandfather and father's footsteps and joined the military - serving as a pilot for the duration of the Rhodesian War. Like his grandparents, he has published his war experiences.
Geldenhuys Genealogy, Descendants of Albert Barends Gildenhuizen
Albert Barend Gildenhuizen (also spelt Gildenhuisz or Gildenhausen) arrived at the Cape in 1661 from Burgsteinfurt, Wesfale, Holland, as a sailor on board the ship "Princesse Royale". He became a "vryburger" on 23rd September 1661, the year before Cape founder Jan van Riebeeck returned to the Netherlands. He returned to Holland to marry Margaretha Hoefnagels and settled in the Cape in 1672. The Geldenhuys Stamvader was employed as a farm labourer from 1662 to 1665, and were known as knechts (hired hands released from the Garrison), working on various farms, among others with farmer Jacob Cloete. "Free burghers" were granted 11.5 hectares of land along the Liesbeek River. Their descendant son, Barend Gildenhausen born on 6th September 1682, was the first purchaser of Vergelegen - the Hottentots Holland wine farm established by Willem Adriaan van der Stel, the son of well-liked Simon van der Stel. Vergelegen borders the town Somerset West.

The Gables in Durban was the authors home for ten years. Being the playground for South Africa it was the best place to retire once one's working life ended. Durban's tropical weather was more pleasurable than polar Cape Town - the only other retirement city considered. The Esplanade building faced the harbour with its massive 'container terminal' reputed to be the largest in the Southern hemisphere, in its day. We witnessed the construction and further development of the vehicle terminal building and its resultant increase of vehicles being exported and imported - departing/arriving Durban by road and rail traffic. We witnessed the transformation of the old the old railway 'Workshop' into a modern shopping center. The beach-front Marine Parade was also modernized during our stay in this Natal coastal resort city.

New REVISED and Updated 2019 edition James Cook is a household name in New Zealand. Samuel Marsden? Love him or hate him Known as the 'flogging pastor' in Australia, he is fondly remembered in New Zealand for bringing Christianity and Civilization with the establishment of Mission Stations. Operation Miracle symbolizes all that was courageous and audacious in the fighting men and women of Rhodesia. It is a tribute to those that made the ultimate sacrifice. This military history account will interest all Rhodesian and Zimbabweans interested in the Rhodesian War 1965 - 1980 history, especially the period before a new government took over the country.Operation Miracle records the search for the crash sites of a Hunter pilot and a Canberra crew - pilot and navigator - killed in action, whose bodies lie in unmarked graves in a foreign country. It also records bringing the close relatives of the three bold airmen to witness the unveiling of the Operation Miracle Memorial that paid tribute nearly 30 years after their next-of-kin were given the tragic news "Killed in Action."This is the story that makes Operation Miracle unique in the history of Rhodesia.Foreword by Air Vice Marshal Chris Dams and Introduction by a Group Capt (both retired from the Rhodesian Air Force / Air Force of Zimbabwe)Much has been written about the Afro-Rhodesian conflict. The life and time of a Rhodesian Air Force combat pilot who followed his father's footsteps into aviation and fought in the Rhodesian / Zimbabwe war 1965-1980. Heritage is traced from his grandfather's participation in the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902, his father's involvement in East-Africa during the Second World War 1939-1945 and his survival in the Southern African conflict. The author flew a variety of aircraft and served as a Flight Commander on Hawker Hunter and Canberra aircraft, serving on No's 1 and 5 Squadrons of the Rhodesian Air Force. Rhodesian Air Force Operations with Airstrike Log and its companion, Nickel Cross was first published in 2007.These two volumes formed the basis for the author's biography. However, the widespread interest in only short sections of the 'full story' attracted so much interest that several sections were published to meet demands. Now a lot more wise and knowledgeable demands that strict editing is applied to sustain the interest - especially the war history aspect.A lesson in War, and life results in "to the Victor, the spoils". In other words, the Government in power writes its own so-called 'history'. Where this is lacking, especially in Africa, country name changes occur, followed by the hijacking of City, town and even street names. So, before long, places and names like Rhodesia and even Pretoria will fade into the past (dare I say history?). My own fact story biography covers different aspects the past. The biggest change in this edition is the much larger font used. With own eyesight fading rapidly, the reader deserves to see what one is reading. This is a true story

This is a comprehensive account of the Rhodesian Air Force role in the 1965 - 1980 war. The work includes one of the most detailed summaries of Rhodesian military operations. It serves as a work of reference for those interested in Southern African conflicts and military operations. There are numerous photographs that illustrate the text and maps showing where some of the more significant air strikes were carried out in Angola, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.Reviews: - ReviewsThis book records the operations of the Rhodesian Air Force. It includes a log of over 1100 airstrikes carried out as well as maps where most of these strikes have been meticously plotted. The maps are printed in full colour. There are numerous black and white photographs that illustrate the text.John Dovey - Just Done Productions o0O0o To those historians and collectors of militaria, this book is one that fills in much detail. It shows how operations in Rhodesia started slowly and built up to a situation where virtually the entire country became involved. The mass of little numbered dots on the maps shows the position of widespread strikes in all the operational areas. To the very end the Air Force kept up its valiant task of securing the airspace for our troops, the BSAP, the farmers and industry. This in addition to the direct support for those missions across the borders.Tol Janeke - the author's Commanding Officer on No 2 Squadron (Vampires), No 5 Squadron (Canberras), Air Detachment JOC Repulse and Air Force Station Thornhill. o0O0o This book is a follow-up on Nickel Cross and is again a very personal account of the author's participation in the anti-terrorist war. A short introduction to the Rhodesian Air Force is followed by a detailed account of operations in which the author was involved, or of which he has received first-hand accounts. The period covered is from the early start of counter-insurgency operations in 1964 up to the sabotage of aircraft at Thornhill in 1982 and the South African support to Renamo until 1983. The writer's feelings and reminiscences run through the narrative, making it exclusively "Prop's" war.Following the narrative comes an exhaustive chronological list of 1145 airstrike reports, each one with all the available information included. Equally important are the meticulously researched maps of operations and air strikes, illustrating fully the extent of air operations during the "Bush War". The book is well illustrated with black and white photographs and line drawings depicting people, operations and aircraft. These latter are particularly useful to non-Air Force members. Finally, there is a Rhodesian Air Force Roll of Honour, and a comprehensive index is included. All in all, this is a highly readable, extremely detailed account of the Rhodesian Air Force's part in the war against terrorism.Mike Russell - Flame Lily Foundation - Review of "Props" War, for the Rhosarian publication o0O0o Considering the political turmoil that brought about hurried separation and destruction of Air Force records in March 1980, Prop's attempt to save whatever could be recovered for this work is highly commendable. Certainly, there are errors and omissions that arise from late searches and faded memories. Nonetheless these records will prove most useful to historical researchers.Peter Petter-Bowyer - author of Winds of Destruction o0O0o Geldenhuys has produced a comprehensive account of the Rhodesian Air Force role in the war in Rhodesia. The work includes one of the most detailed summaries of Rhodesian military operations to have been published, and in this respect, serves as an excellent work of reference. However, the book is much more than this, as the author's personal experience leaps from every page, producing a fascinating combination of memoir and historical account. o0O0o Dr Timothy Lovering - Research Fellow at the University of the West of England
