This is a record of window glass making by the Company of Pilkington Brothers, at Grove Street, St. Helens from 1826 to 1952.St. Helens is in England in the South of Lancashire at what was in the old days the junction of the roads from Liverpool to Bolton and from Warrington to Ormskirk. It grew up from 1700 onwards, as a product of the industrial revolution when it was found to have coal and sand in its immediate vicinity with salt nearby. The construction of a canal and then a railway helped to found glass and chemical industries, copper works and foundries, all of which grew steadily through the 1800s.There are three periods in history of glass making at Grove Street, the first being what I will call the "Manual Age" from about the 17th. Century to 1930, the second being the "Mechanical Age" from 1930 to 1958 and then from 1958 the "Technological Age", epitomised by the making of glass by the float process. The record is wholly about the sheet and rolled glass making factory known as Sheet Works, located in St. Helens at Grove Street only a short distance from the town centre. It was the birth place of the Company of Pilkington Brothers when it was originally founded as the St. Helens Glass Company in 1826 who started glass making under the Old Cone or No. 1 House, near to the banks of the St. Helens canal.

Schizophrenia and Parkinson Surgery: A New and Efficient Regulation of Dopaminergic Synapses after BEAM (Bilateral Electrocoagulation of Adrenal Medul
The book about Schizophrenia & Parkinson Surgery, allows patients and their families to obtain scientific information about the only surgical solution that definitely eradicates symptoms of these diseases and allows the patients to recover completely. This book presents the latest medical breakthrough for the surgical treatment of Schizophrenia, where the author explains his theory on how the surgery works biochemically & physiologically, and on the other hand, displays unheard of results from actual cases from around the world after being operated. The author, Dr. Jose Romeo Mackliff, an Ecuadorian Psychiatrist, is the creator of bilateral electrocoagulation adrenal medulla (B.E.A.M.). He first discovered experimentally, 35 years ago, that high glucose levels, producing twelve hours of hyperglycemia, produced temporary short term relief of the symptoms in schizophrenia and subsequently, throughout the study, found that these improvements were due to high glucose levels blocking the releasing hormones and at the same time stopping the hypothalamus pituitary adrenal axis (HPA) from being overactive. Hyperglycemia blocked the presence of adrenaline, glucagon and cortisol in the bloodstream. The conclusion of this study was that the delayed action of these hormones was caused by the HPA axis fatigue and that it was necessary to block at least one of these hormones to relieve 30% of the axis' work . The crucial question became, which hormone must be eliminated by surgery. Adrenalin was chosen for being located in the adrenal Medulla on top of each kidney and could be easily eliminated by BEAM. Thus, the axis fatigue was solved and the disruption of the gluco-regulation presenting in schizophrenics due to the failure of the adrenal response and chronic stress, resolved. After BEAM, the Adrenaline is immediately replaced by norepinephrine produced in the brain, in such a way that the patient keeps the necessary hormonal function to deal with stress and eliminates the failure of the gluco-regulation from bringing normal levels of hormones to the HPA axis. According to the results from the surgery, patients that show Parkinson s disease who undergo BEAM surgery exhibit no symptoms immediately after surgery, but the results may vary and the patients might experience symptoms again. This is not the case with patients with schizophrenia who undergo the surgery. BEAM (Bi-lateral Electrocoagulation of the Adrenal Medulla) was born. BEAM is a surgery that has been practiced since 2006, that can eradicate the intake of antipsychotic medications for life. It offers a real alternative in the lives of patients, capable of bringing Psychiatry and surgery together, thus becoming the new Psychiatry for the 21st century.
Explanatory Remarks on the Preface to Sydney Parkinson's Journal of a Voyage to the South-Seas. By John Fothergill, M.D. F.R.S
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.Rich in titles on English life and social history, this collection spans the world as it was known to eighteenth-century historians and explorers. Titles include a wealth of travel accounts and diaries, histories of nations from throughout the world, and maps and charts of a world that was still being discovered. Students of the War of American Independence will find fascinating accounts from the British side of conflict. ++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. When was the first chat line between men established? Who was the first "lesbian"? Were ancient Greek men who had sex with each other necessarily "gay," and what did Shakespeare think about crossdressing? A Little Gay History answers these questions and more through close readings of art objects from the British Museum's far-ranging collection. Consulting ancient Egyptian papyri, the Roman Warren Cup's erotic figures, David Hockney's vivid prints, and dozens of other artifacts, R. B. Parkinson draws attention to a diverse range of same-sex experiences and situates them within specific historical and cultural contexts. The first of its kind, A Little Gay History builds a complex and creative portrait of love's many guises.

Despite the amazing progress made by the stereotactic technique, particularly regarding the localization of the target, despite the extreme caution, which stereotactic neurosurgeons apply at every step of the procedures, despite the routine roentgenologic and physiologic controls (depth EEG, electric stimulation) preceding the production of a lesion, there remains a certain degree of uncertainty regarding the position, shape and extent of the lesion as well as of the electrode track and also regarding unintended lesions in the vicinity. The final answer to these questions depends on the anatomical control. Thus we must be grateful to the authors, who performed 3700 subcortical stereotactic interventions, that they present a careful comparison of the clinical and of the pathologic anatomic findings, in the cases whose brains could be studied. They demonstrate what degree of exactness can be expected from the stereotactic technique. They also present a careful outline of the morphology, physiology, biochemistry and pathology of the structures that are affected in Parkinson patients. In addition this monograph permits one to familiarize oneself with the methods of stimulation and destruction practiced by the authors. The relevant literature is conscientiously quoted. A study of this mono graph will benefit not only the stereotactic neurosurgeon, but also neurophysiologists, pathologists and practicing neurologists.

This work represents the account of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Thin Film Growth Techniques for Low Dimensional Structures", held at the University of Sussex, Brighton, England from 15-19 Sept. 1986. The objective of the workshop was to review the problems of the growth and characterisation of thin semiconductor and metal layers. Recent advances in deposition techniques have made it possible to design new material which is based on ultra-thin layers and this is now posing challenges for scientists, technologists and engineers in the assessment and utilisation of such new material. Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) has become well established as a method for growing thin single crystal layers of semiconductors. Until recently, MBE was confined to the growth of III-V compounds and alloys, but now it is being used for group IV semiconductors and II-VI compounds. Examples of such work are given in this volume. MBE has one major advantage over other crystal growth techniques in that the structure of the growing layer can be continuously monitored using reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED). This technique has offered a rare bonus in that the time dependent intensity variations of RHEED can be used to determine growth rates and alloy composition rather precisely. Indeed, a great deal of new information about the kinetics of crystal growth from the vapour phase is beginning to emerge.

This Brief examines criminal careers by providing the most extensive and comprehensive investigation to date on the official offending, self-reported offending, and trajectories of offending of the Pittsburgh Youth Study (PYS) participants. The PYS is a longitudinal study, which was initiated in 1987, and involves repeated follow-ups on several community cohorts (starting in grades 1, 4, and 7) of inner-city boys in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This Brief covers the Youngest and Oldest PYS cohorts (which had the most follow-up and most data available) from ages 10-30. It provides the most complete descriptive analyses of the criminal careers of these males to date. The three cohorts are commonly referred to as the Youngest, Middle, and Oldest cohorts, respectively. Consistent with several prior publications with the PYS data (Loeber et al., 2008), this book focuses only on data from the Youngest and Oldest cohorts as these cohorts were followedup the most frequently and have the longest time window of data available. It will be of interest to researchers in Criminology and Criminal Justice, as well as related fields like Sociology, Developmental Psychology, Social Policy, and Education.
