Thirteen-year old Thomas Trelawney thinks he will never get over the death of his sister, Grace. When he is plunged into the parallel world of Georgian Yngerlande and tasked with saving their tolerant, diverse world from a brutal uprising, using powers he never knew he possessed, he can start to forget and move on. But who is the secretive hooded girl who arrives to help him, leaving a trail of stars and mystery in her wake? "Fans of 'Orphans of the Tide' and 'His Dark Materials' will love this book! Full of mystery, adventure and emotion."
After saving Yngerlande from the plot to overthrow Queen Matilda and install Oliver as the new King, Silas Cummerbund, The Watcher, spends the long hot summer training Princess Gaia to use her secret magical powers so that she can keep the country safe in the future. But all the while, he is being watched by Shrike, the strange and secretive kitchen boy. When Matilda is kidnapped, and various allies disappear, it is clear that Oliver and Jacob have returned and are more dangerous than ever. Silas summons Thomas Trelawney, The Friend, from England to help protect the realm once more. He came to the rescue once before - can he do it again?

The Strabane Barony during the Ulster Plantation, 1607-41

The Ulster Plantation of the early seventeenth century is widely accepted as a period of critical importance in the shaping of modern Ulster and one of the most significant projects of colonisation in the early modern world. However, there have been relatively few studies that have looked in detail at the impact of the Plantation scheme at local level. This publication brings together the work of a group of professional and amateur historians. Forty years ago a small group of people under the leadership of the late Mr Robert J. Hunter (University of Ulster) looked firstly at the Plantation of Ulster and then sought out information for this period relating specifically to the barony of Strabane.Under the scheme of Plantation, Strabane barony was allocated to undertakers from Scotland, the chief of whom was James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Abercorn. The settlement here was therefore overwhelmingly Scottish, rather than English. Chapters in this book look at Strabane in the pre-Plantation era, the background of the Scottish undertakers, the development of the town of Strabane, the impact of the Reformation, and the socio-economic conditions prevailing in the barony in the early seventeenth century.First published over 30 years ago, this fresh edition of The Strabane Barony during the Ulster Plantation, 1607-41 presents to a new audience the story of the Plantation in the barony of Strabane. It stands as an exemplar of the way in which a professional historian and his students can successfully work together to produce a high-quality publication.

The Spitfire began as a near disaster. The developments of this famous aircraft took it from uncompromising beginnings to become the legendary last memorial to a great man - an elegant and, with its pilots, a highly effective, weapon of war. The Spitfire would not have happened at all, however, without Mitchell's indomitable courage and determination in the face of severe physical and psychological adversity resulting from cancer. His contribution to the Battle of Britain, and thereafter to the achievement of final victory in 1945, was so great that our debt to him can never be repaid. This poignant story is written from a uniquely personal viewpoint by his son, Gordon Mitchell.

The book provides a critical and constructive assessment of the many contributions to social science and politics made by Professor R. J. Rummel. Rummel was a prolific writer and an important teacher and mentor to a number of people who in turn have made their mark on the profession. His work has always been controversial. But after the end of the Cold War, his views on genocide and the democratic peace in particular have gained wide recognition in the profession. He was also a pioneer in the use of statistical methods in international relations. His work in not easily classified in the traditional categories of international relations research (realism, idealism, and constructivism). He was by no means a pacifist and his views on the US-Soviet arms race led him to be classified as a hawk. But his work on the democratic peace has become extremely influential among liberal IR scholars and peace researchers. Above all, he was a libertarian.
