Sister of Darkness: The Chronicles of a Modern Exorcist

Sister of Darkness: The Chronicles of a Modern Exorcist

Rachel H. Stavis; Sarah Durand

Dey Street Books
2018

The world's only non-denominational exorcist tells her astonishing true story: a riveting chronicle of wrestling entities from infected souls, showing how pain and trauma opens us to attachment from forces that drain our energy . . . and can even destroy our humanity. As a secular exorcist, Rachel H. Stavis has cleansed thousands of tormented people, from small children and Hollywood moguls to stay-at-home moms and politicians. But for many years, the horror screenwriter and novelist denied her gift. As a little girl, she began to see "monsters" floating around her bedroom or attached to other children. Told it was only her imagination, Rachel learned to ignore the things she saw. But a series of events in adulthood forced her to acknowledge her unique ability and embrace her power to heal. Since then, Rachel has dedicated her life to helping others cast off the forces feeding off of us. Performing her services pro-bono, she quietly worked in the shadows, until she unknowingly revealed her work to a journalist, who told her story to NPR.A unique look at demonology removed from religious dogma, Sister of Darkness recounts Rachel's journey to becoming an exorcist and chronicles some of her most extreme cleansings cases, including those that put her and her clients in peril. Going deep into her world, we meet the diverse range of people she has helped--young, old, famous and not--in gripping stories of danger and sometimes sadness, that are ultimately about redemption. Rachel teaches us that there are a diverse range of "entities" surrounding us--some of these are playful or misguided, while some are dangerous and harmful. She introduces each of them and explains their power, helping us understand what is attacking and hurting us, and what we can do to protect ourselves.Frightening, eye-opening, and utterly enthralling, Sister of Darkness brings to light a world ruled by destruction, chaos and fear, and the woman who bravely fights to protect those who seeks her out.

The Garden That You're Growing is a poetry book about the messy path to building a life you're proud of, and the people we love and lose on the way. This collection of poems weaves natural imagery and storytelling together to explore growing up, self-image, friendship, and faith. This book is for those who are on a journey of growth, or for those looking for a special gift for a friend.the garden that you're growing you're looking in the mirrorand don't like what you see.you're nothing like the personthat by now you thought you'd be. and the voices in your headstart telling you those lies, now there's a tremor in your lipand tears inside your eyes. they tell you about the otherswho are so much better than you, and you've heard it enough timesthat you start to believe it's true. that everything you've worked to beand everything you've madewhen put against another lifejust all begin to fade. but oh, you need to wipe your eyesto see things as they are.a life of your own makingshould never be put on par. and their grass just may be greenerbut that is not worth knowing.for the greenest grass cannot compareto the garden that you're growing.

Desire in the Iliad

Desire in the Iliad

Rachel H. Lesser

Oxford University Press

sidottu
This is the first study to examine desire in the Iliad in a comprehensive way, and to explain its relationship to the epic's narrative structure and audience reception. Rachel H. Lesser offers a new reading of the poem that shows how the characters' desires, especially those of the mortal hero Achilleus and the divine king Zeus, motivate plot and keep the audience engaged with the epic until and even beyond its end. The author argues that the characters' desires are primarily organized in narrative triangles that feature two parties in conflict over a third. A variety of desires animate these triangles, including sexual passion, longing for a lost loved one, yearning for lamentation, and aggressive desires for vengeance and status, and they are signified with terms such as eros, himeros, pothe, menos, thumos, boule, and eeldor, as well as through the epic's thematic emotions of grief and anger. Desire in the Iliad shows how the mortals' and gods' triangular desires together drive and shape two Iliadic plots, the main plot of Achilleus' withdrawal from the fighting and then return to battle, and the "superplot" of the larger Trojan War story. The author also argues that these plots and their motivating desires arouse the listener's-or reader's-own corresponding desires: narrative desire to know and understand the Iliad's full story, sympathetic desire for characters' welfare, and empathetic passions, longings, and wishes. Our desires invest us in the epic narrative and their resolution brings us satisfaction.

The singular role of Shabkar in the development of the idea of Tibet Shabkar (1781-1851), the “Singer of the Land of Snows,” was a renowned yogi and poet who, through his autobiography and songs, developed a vision of Tibet as a Buddhist “imagined community.” By incorporating vernacular literature, providing a narrative mapping of the Tibetan plateau, reviving and adapting the legend of Tibetans as Avalokitesvara’s chosen people, and promoting shared Buddhist values and practices, Shabkar’s concept of Tibet opened up the discursive space for the articulation of modern forms of Tibetan nationalism. Employing analytical lenses of cultural nationalism and literary studies, Rachel Pang explores the indigenous epistemologies of identity, community, and territory that predate contemporary state-centric definitions of nation and nationalism in Tibet, and provides the definitive treatment of this foundational figure.

Pattern Theory is a groundbreaking exploration of the concept of pattern across a range of disciplines, including science, neuroscience, psychology, and social sciences. This book examines the meaning and implications of pattern, presenting a comprehensive body of theory that unifies concepts of form, order, and regularity and connects them to memory and perception. By challenging existing orthodoxies and linking evidence from brain and mind function, it outlines a robust theoretical framework around pattern searching and matching, pattern activation, and the continuity of pattern nexuses. This in-depth study of pattern theory and pattern thinking delves into the cognitive basis of patterns, their impact on reasoning and learning, and the social and collaborative nature of pattern recognition, expression, and representation. It also addresses philosophical issues and implications surrounding shared pattern thinking and introduces a broad conceptual basis for "pattern inquiry", providing a range of questions and methodologies for applying pattern theory. The book culminates in a manifesto for pattern theory and its application in pattern inquiry, offering 50 key principles that can be applied across various settings. Researchers, scholars, and practitioners are encouraged to explore and critique this unified theory as a lens for examining social and cognitive phenomena.Ideal for academics and professionals seeking to challenge their understanding of the connections between mind and society, as well as for those looking to deepen their understanding of pattern as a cognitive phenomenon, as a theoretical lens, and as a meta-methodology for inquiry, this text provides a substantive foundation for ongoing development and application of pattern science across multiple fields.

In Unsettled Labors, Rachel H. Brown explores the overlooked labor of migrant workers in Israel’s eldercare industry. Brown argues that live-in eldercare in Palestine/Israel, which is primarily done by migrant workers, is an often invisible area where settler colonialism is reproduced culturally, economically, and biologically. Situating Israeli labor markets within a longer history of imperialism and dispossession of Palestinian land, Brown positions migrant eldercare within the resulting tangle of Israeli laws, policies, and social discourses. She draws from interviews with caretakers, public statements, court documents, and first-hand fieldwork to uncover the inherently contradictory nature of elder care work: the intimate presence of South and Southeast Asian workers in the home unsettles the idea of the Israeli home as an exclusively Jewish space. By paying close attention to the comparative racialization of migrant workers, Palestinians, asylum seekers, and Mizrahi and Ashkenazi settlers, Brown raises important questions of labor, social reproduction, displacement, and citizenship told through the stories of collective care provided by migrant workers in a settler colonial state.
