The garden as inspiration The garden embodies a condensed version of nature, just as, in Japanese philosophy, the entire world is thought to be reflected in a single dewdrop. This notion may be the inspiration for the Swiss imitation of Japanese gardens in the 20th century, the impetus for the incorporation of Japanese design elements more generally, and the conversion principle from alpine landscapes to Japanese stone gardens. Taking ten Swiss landscape architecture studios as examples, the author illustrates how they drew inspiration from miniaturized gardens (bonsai), borrowed scenery (shakkei), succumbed to the allure of the imperfect (wabi-sabi), and captured the spirit of Zen Buddhism. This book reveals parallels to the assimilation of Chinese influences in Japan and situates the phenomenon within the general reception of Japan in the West. Attractive and previously unpublished visual materials Well-researched content presented in a clear and appealing manner Japanophilia in Swiss landscape architecture with a photoessay by Martin Linsi

Oliver Schwarz is a well-known architect in his native Switzerland. Less widely known is his skill as an artist and the inventor of a series of incredible flying contraptions. Here to bring Schwarz's body of artistic work to a wider audience is Schwarzflug, the first book to focus on his paintings, drawings and inventions over three decades. Schwarzflug features some four hundred full-colour illustrations to demonstrate the impressive range of Schwarz's work, which comprises both analogue - chalk, ink, and pencil - and digital techniques with equal accomplishment. In an interview published alongside the illustrations, Schwarz offers insight into his creative process. He elaborates on the relationship between his art and the flying contraptions he has invented, on his sense of space while painting, and on the manipulable nature of digitally produced art. Additional texts offer short descriptions of the images and explore associations with Western artistic traditions. Text in English and German.

Rachel Hartman's award-winning debut will have you looking at dragons as you've never imagined them before... Seraphina is a half-dragon, descended from a dragon mother who took human form and a father who has no particular fondness for Seraphina's kind. Not that anyone else does either. Hers is a world where dragons and humans live and work side by side--but below the surface, tensions and hostilities are on the rise. Seraphina guards her true self with all of her being, but when a member of the royal family is brutally murdered, she's suddenly thrust into the spotlight, drawn into the investigation alongside the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian. Award-winning Rachel Hartman's newest YA is a tour de force and an exquisite fantasy for the #metoo movement. "Tess of the Road is astonishing and perfect. It's the most compassionate book I've read since George Eliot's Middlemarch." --NPR In the medieval kingdom of Goredd, women are expected to be ladies, men are their protectors, and dragons can be whomever they choose. Tess is none of these things. Tess is. . . different. She speaks out of turn, has wild ideas, and can't seem to keep out of trouble. Then Tess goes too far. What she's done is so disgraceful, she can't even allow herself to think of it. Unfortunately, the past cannot be ignored. So Tess's family decide the only path for her is a nunnery. But on the day she is to join the nuns, Tess chooses a different path for herself. She cuts her hair, pulls on her boots, and sets out on a journey. She's not running away, she's running towards something. What that something is, she doesn't know. Tess just knows that the open road is a map to somewhere else--a life where she might belong. Returning to the spellbinding world of the Southlands she created in the award-winning, New York Times bestselling novel Seraphina, Rachel Hartman explores self-reliance and redemption in this wholly original fantasy. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR * BOSTON GLOBE * The Chicago Public Library * KIRKUS REVIEWS Four starred reviews "The world building is gorgeous, the creatures are vivid and Hartman is a masterful storyteller. Pick up this novel, and savor every page." --Paste Magazine
