The story of one woman's passionate odyssey and sophisticated fantasy of Arabia, ancient and modern. "There was a blue cast to Satjma's handsomely sculpted mesmerizing tale of earthbound witchery and celestial love."Fatma, an Arabian peasant girl, unwittingly embarks upon a strange journey of transformation the day her father marries her off to a snake handler. Unbeknownst to the new bride, her husband milks the venom of his snakes for use in potions he sells on the side. Bitten by one of the snakes, Fatma changes from naive girl to sensuous woman. What's more, she now gains an arcane affinity for her husband's reptiles as well as a talent for controlling them. This trait will enable her to travel from the sands of Arabia to the shadows of the Netherworld beyond the realm of ordinary human experience.Resonating with ritual and mystery, Fatma is a fabulous tale of one woman's path to ecstasy - an enraptured vision of enchantment in this world and fulfillment in another. The first novel to be published in English by one of the most distinguished of modern Arabic writers, this imaginative work blends naturalistic prose, poetry, and song with all the magic of its author's abundant literary gifts.

The distinguished Middle Eastern author Raja Alem grew up in Mecca at a time when the holy city was on the cusp of transformation from medieval to modern. In this vanished Mecca, vividly brought to life again in ""My Thousand and One Nights"", women hold center stage - especially Jummo, the wildly passionate daughter of the Water Carriers' Sheik. This faraway time and setting become compellingly real through the intimate drama of Jummo's life, the tragic arc of her affair with her childhood sweetheart and her lifelong love for the mysterious Sidi Wadhana, a more-than-human emissary from the Netherworld. Jummo's world, veiled and invisible to outsiders until this telling of her story, has the feel of the true center of an Arabia that has come to us in many exotic and threatening guises. ""Jummo's Mecca"" is a different world, with different narrative strategies, but her dramatic problems are universal: how lethal is love, how dangerous is woman? And how sensual is the yearning for immortality?

November 1979. Violence has broken out in the holiest site of Islam after a charismatic rebel and his devoted followers have announced the coming of the Mahdi and seized the Grand Mosque in Mecca. Among the insurgents is a young woman, Sarab, disguised as a man. As the horror and chaos of the siege reach their peak, she escapes and encounters a French officer from the opposing side. They form an unexpected bond, as hostility turns to attraction, but the violence of both of their pasts will return to haunt them. Award-winning writer Raja Alem’s extraordinary narrative stretches from Saudi Arabia’s Najd desert to the heart of Paris. In her typical bold and captivating style, this most unusual of love stories unpicks faith and fanaticism, alienation and redemption, and ultimately what it means to be human.

When the body of a young woman is discovered in the Lane of Many Heads, an alley in modern-day Mecca, no one will claim it, as they are ashamed of her nakedness. As Detective Nasser pursues his investigation of the case, seemingly all of Mecca chimes in—including the Lane of Many Heads itself—in this “surreal, meditative take on a murder mystery” (The Guardian, Best Books of Summer). Nasser initially suspects that the dead woman is Aisha, one of the residents of the area, and searches her emails for clues. The world she paints embraces everything from crime and religious extremism to the exploitation of foreign workers by a mafia of building contractors, who are destroying the historic areas of the city. Another view reveals the city through the eyes of Yusuf, Aisha’s neighbor, increasingly frustrated by the accelerating pace of change. As gripping as classic noir, nuanced as a Nabokov novel, and labyrinthine as the alleys of Mecca itself, this brilliant fever dream of a novel masterfully reveals a city and a civilization in all its contradictions, at once beholden to brutal customs and uneasily coming to terms with new traditions.

Oletko onnellinen? Nauttikaa. Vaikka Raja käsissä.Jani Sirkiä

Raja tarkastelee nimensä mukaisesti rajojen olemusta, rajoilla olemista ja rajaamista. Runojen säkeet värähtelevät toisiaan vasten ja muodostavat sarjallisia kokonaisuuksia kielellisistä reunoista, syrjistä, kynnyksistä ja yhteyksistä.Fragmentti ”Rajatussa tilassa koettu rajattomuus” on kokoelman temaattinen lähtökohta; kokemukset ovat aina kielellisesti ja kehollisesti rajallisia, mutta niihin liittyy mahdollisuus hetkelliseen rajattomuuden kokemukseen.Vesa Etelämäki (1981) on tamperelainen runoilija ja musiikintekijä. Raja on hänen toinen runokokoelmansa.

Joku on maalannut pihaan paksun punaisen viivan. Se on raja, jota ei saa ylittää. Mitä tarkoittaa, kun jokin asia on kielletty? Onko se sama asia kuin vaarallinen? Mitä jos rajan ylittää, ihan vain pikkuisen? Suositun ruotsalaistekijän kuvakirja kertoo aikuisten asettamista rajoista ja lapsen tutkimusretkistä maailmaan. Toisaalta kutkuttavasta houkutuksesta rikkoa sääntöä, ja toisaalta rajojen tuomasta turvasta, jota jokainen lapsi tarvitsee kasvaessaan. Maria Nilsson Thore tavoittaa lapsen maailman aitona ja todentuntuisena.

This book, first published in 1922, examines the science of Râja Yoga. All the orthodox systems of Indian philosophy point to one goal, the liberation of the soul through perfection – and the method to attain this is through Yoga. This book presents lectures on Yoga, delivered to a western audience view to explaining Indian philosophy; the lectures are accompanied by the Sutras (aphorisms) of Patanjali, along with an explanatory commentary.

In the early nineteenth century, the south Indian kingdom of Tanjore, which had come under the control of the East India Company, flourished as a ‘centre’ of enlightenment. This book traces the contours of the Tanjore enlightenment, which produced a knowledge that was at once modern and deeply rooted in the indigenous tradition. The chief protagonist of this first ever full-length study on Tanjore at the turn of the nineteenth century is Raja Serfoji II (r. 1798–1832), in whose world science and God coexisted comfortably. Tanjore at this time was a thriving contact-zone, linked to several centres through extensive local and global networks. Its court attracted a great number of visitors, including Christian missionaries, high-ranking Company officials, princely contemporaries, naturalists, and medical practitioners. Dwelling on the locatedness of science and enlightenment modernity in the context of the colonial periphery, the book describes how the Raja deployed certain ‘vectors of assemblage’ — an array of practices, instruments, theories and people, including his vast collection of manuscripts, books and scientific instruments, a Devanagari printing press, a menagerie, health establishments and a large retinue of trained experts and artists — to invent Tanjore as a contemporary ‘centre’. Shunning reductionist and diffusionist explanations of the transmission of Western science in colonial settings, the study uses hitherto unexplored archival sources to reconstruct the Tanjore enlightenment as the outcome of globally situated cross-cultural exchanges. It celebrates the openness and confidence with which European science was engaged with, assimilated, translated and reinvented in a ‘contact-zone’ located in the colonial backwaters of south India. The book will be of interest to historians, sociologists and those interested in history of science and medicine, anthropologists, cultural studies scholars, as well as the general reader.

During their journey, they encounter two rabbits named Raja and Belle that are fleeing from the oppressive Dr. Tarroc who makes them wear pendants around their necks that contain their souls. What secrets lie hidden inside the castle and the past of Hanako and the others?

A key figure in the revival of Hinduism in India, and instrumental in introducing Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world, Swami Vivekananda achieved more in his short 39 years than most could possibly achieve in two life-times. Vivekananda promoted the science of religion , the common threads of spirituality that run through almost all traditional religions that, despite dogmatic and ritual differences, hold the key to enlightenment. This volume contains two of his most famous and studied works. Raja Yoga (literally royal yoga ) is his instructional manual on the mechanics of spirituality, focusing on meditation and mental control. Bhakti Yoga ( devotional yoga ) is, as Vivekananda himself puts it, a real, genuine search after the Lord, a search beginning, continuing, and ending in Love. Bhakti Yoga emphasizes practice over ritual. Contains an extensive glossary of Hindu and Buddhist terms.
