Vladimir Ussachevsky (1911-1990), a pioneer in electronic music, was also a composer, teacher and administrator of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. His more than 44 works involving electroacoustics reflect the importance of his contribution to electronic music. Ussachevsky studied with Howard Hanson, Bernard Rogers and Otto Luening and his style varied from neoromantic and Russian Orthodox influences in choral music and other compositions before 1952 to electronic and computer music from 1952 to his death in 1990. Karl Ulrichs's studies of sexual diversity galvanized the burgeoning field of sexual science in the nineteenth century. But in the years since, his groundbreaking activism has overshadowed his scholarly achievements. Ulrichs publicly defied Prussian law to agitate for gay equality and marriage, and founded the world's first organization dedicated to the legal and social emancipation of homosexuals. Ralph M. Leck returns Ulrichs to his place as the inventor of the science of sexual heterogeneity. Who controls corporations? is perhaps one of the central questions of power structure research. Ralph M. Corporate Networks and Corporate Control provides empirical evidence of the nature and extent of interlocking directorates among Fortune 500 and Fortune 50 ranked corporations within that area. Faris generates a profile of nationally and locally oriented multiple interlockers to compare with current sociological descriptions of the national ruling class and identifies forty-eight multiple-interlockers along with data on their connections to policy-setting groups, sociocultural organizations, and religious denominations. This scaled-down but more descriptive version of a larger national study of Fortune 500 companies takes a comprehensive look at the affiliations of Philadelphia's corporate network including memberships in elite private clubs, policy-setting groups, and more. Tables and figures make the interlocking connections particularly accessible.In early chapters, Faris gives one of the clearest expositions of three different theoretical models of corporate control--Managerialism (and its more recent version, Resource Dependency), Class Cohesion, and Finance Control--and explains their distinct patterns of interlocking. Subsequent chapters give a complete picture of the methodologies of interlock analysis, including previous methods and approaches, and present a clear rendering of the facts of data collection and the geographical focus. In this cross-national, empirical study of the workings of voluntary agencies, Ralph M. Kramer cuts through the conceptual confusion surrounding voluntarism and the boundaries between the public and private sectors. He draws on a survey of voluntary agencies helping disabled people in four welfare democracies (the United States, England, Israel, and the Netherlands) to explain the virtues and flaws of different patterns of government-voluntary relationships in coping with the growing demand for human services. Kramer concludes that many of the most cherished beliefs about the voluntary sector have little basis in fact. The most innovative agencies, for example, are not the smallest, but rather among the largest, most bureaucratized, and most professionalized. Professor Goldman has contributed articles and books in divers fields of political science. Volume I focuses on the emergence of transnational political parties. His researches have led Goldman to conclude that transnational parties are the precursors of a world party system and that a world party system will become the institutional alternative to international warfare. In the near-term prospects of transnational party development, he traces the methods and consequences of international collaborations among national parties and the implications of transnational party developments for the Democratic and Republican parties of the United States.
