रामकथा को अलौकिकता के दायरे से निकालकर, मानवीय क्षमताओं के स्तर पर परखने की शृंखला का नाम है 'राम-रावण कथा'। इसकी विशेषता ही यह है कि इसमें राम नायक अवश्य हैं किंतु रावण भी खलनायक नहीं है। कथा का दूसरा खंड 'दशानन' रावण पर केंद्रित था, इसलिए क्योंकि कथा कालक्रमानुसार प्रगति कर रही है और रावण के चरमोत्कर्ष का काल राम के कर्मक्षेत्र में उतरने से पूर्व का है। इस तीसरे खंड 'राम सप्तम विष्णु का अभ्युदय' में पूरी कथा में राम ही राम हैं। यह उनके विष्णु के अवतार के रूप में प्रतिष्ठित होने की कथा है। इस प्रतिष्ठा को सार्थक करने के उनके प्रयासों की कथा है। इस खंड की कथा राम के विश्वामित्र के साथ ताड़का-वध हेतु प्रस्थान से आरम्भ होकर उनके दण्डक-वन में प्रवेश तक की गाथा है। दूसरे शब्दों में वनगमन से पुनः वनगमन तक की कथा है। किस प्रकार राज्याभिषेक की देहरी तक पहुँचकर भी उन्होंने सहर्ष राज्य का मोह त्यागकर वनगमन स्वीकार किया, यही इस कथा का केन्द्रबिन्दु है। राम के वनवास की कथा हो और कैकेयी का उल्लेख न हो, ऐसा भला कैसे हो सकता है। किंतु इस कथा की कैकेयी से आप घृणा नहीं करेंगे, उससे भी आप प्यार करेंगे, उसका सम्मान करेंगे। इस सबके बीच अनेक बिन्दु आपकी चेतना को झकझोरेंगे भी कि अरे, यह तथ्य तो हमें भी ज्ञात है पर इससे पहले इसे इस दृष्टिकोण से क्यों नहीं देखा

In this much-needed study of an often-neglected figure, the author unearths a fascinating narrative about Ram Gopal, the individual and the dancer, drawing on interviews with his remaining family, costume-makers, friends, dance partners, fellow dancers and audience members. More broadly, we come to understand the culture of Indian dance at the time, including the politics of the nomenclature and of the nationalist and orientalist discourses, the rapid changes created by the demise of colonialism and the influence of Western styles of dance, such as ballet and modern, in its development.
