A photographer who defined the aesthetics and attitudes of the 1990s and 2000s, Rankin s influence continues to be seen everywhere, from fashion editorials to cinematography, graphic design, and music videos for artists from Iggy Azalea to Miley Cyrus. Edited by the photographer himself, and drawing from thirty years of work, this is the first retrospective of Rankin s full career. From early provocative portraiture in the late 1980s, through his founding with Jefferson Hack of the fashion bibles of the 1990s and 2000s, Dazed and Confused and AnOther Magazine, to his pioneering of independent television and film through Hunger and his iconic monographs on Heidi Klum and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Rankin s work has defined the face of popular culture for generations. Presented in reverse chronology, with a nod to a continuing spirit of contradiction, Unfashionable moves from Rankin s most iconic portraiture and documentary work through his nudes, his ground-breaking fashion work, and back to his earliest Polaroids. With contributions from Rankin and several of his influences, peers, subjects, and admirers, this is the definitive look at one of the most profound influences on fashion and photography working today.

Play draws exclusively on Rankin s archive of photographs of the biggest names in contemporary music from the rock gods who shaped our musical landscape to the British Invasion of the 1990s and the American superstars who mix music and production to define what the record industry is today. Divided by theme Heroes and Girl Gangs and Boy Bands, Cool Britannia and My Generation Play collects almost two hundred of Rankin s favorite images of the most influential artists of the last three decades, from David Bowie and Elton John to Pharrell, the Spice Girls, Grimes, and Bjork. Alongside his photos are anecdotes from Rankin and the artists themselves on the reciprocal relationship between photographer and subject and between the star power of pop music and the iconography of fashion.

When Rebecca Rankin travels from her mountain farm along Rankin Creek in remote Limestone County to attend her sister's funeral in Indiana, she does more than pay her respects. She sees her son, from whom she has been estranged for more than thirty years. And she meets, for the first time, her granddaughter, Kristi. Plucky but troubled, Kristi needs the love Rebecca can give, while Rebecca seeks the hope she thinks Kristi can offer. Also weighing heavily on Rebecca is her goal, bordering on obsession, of ensuring that the farm, owned by her family for over two and a half centuries, remains in Rankin hands after she is gone. Amid all this, both Rebecca and Kristi embark on journeys during which they learn to see themselves--and others--through fresh eyes. What ensues is a powerful tale of discovery, forgiveness, and redemption that will linger in the reader's mind long after the final page has been turned. John Omwake's previous works include THE EDUCATION OF NEELY ROSE WALLER and LIMESTONE COUNTY, in which the story of the Rankin family begins.

Welcome to the world of the Rankin Street Raiders, or Tom Sawyer times five. Their exploits and misadventures took place in a time when guys driving flashy candy-coloured muscle cars ruled the roads, girls wore frilly polka-dotted party dresses to school, dogs ran free and drug store soda fountains sold root beer floats stacked with ice cream, and yes, there was always a cherry on top.The Raiders practiced their artful piracy in Detroit, Windsor and their home town of Amherstburg, or A'burg. It was where and when CKLW brought a brand-new beat to the airwaves with hit after hit from the Motown song factory. Newly minted Great Lakes Freighters parted the waters like 747s preparing for takeoff. Boblo, an island amusement park, drew merrymakers from around North America. Fort Malden stood strong, still a bastion of the War of 1812. Point Pelee, the southernmost tip of Canada, became a migratory bird sanctuary and the guardian of countless plant species.Embracing this rich environment, the Raiders pulled off escapade after escapade that were created in a combined spirit of friendship and glee.So climb aboard their good ship, unfurl the Rankin Street Raider flag and sail into a past that contains unbridled fun with some lessons for the future."The Rankin Street Raiders is an absolute pleasure to read. The book is a warm, inspiring story, rife with the kind of adventure, mischief, and even melancholy that only a pack of young teenagers could manifest and share with us. The author has chosen to pull the Raiders closer and closer to our hearts with each sentence. By the end, we feel like closing the book is like saying goodbye to friends."-Jessica Kirby, Editor

Ian Rankin is considered by many to be Scotland's greatest living crime fiction author. Most well known for his Inspector Rebus series--which has earned critical acclaim as well as scores of fans worldwide--Rankin is a prolific author whose other works include spy thrillers, nonfiction books and articles, short stories, novels, graphic novels, audio recordings, television/film, and plays. This companion--the first to provide a complete look at all of his writings--includes alphabetized entries on Rankin's works, characters, and themes; a biography; a chronology; maps of Rebus' Edinburgh; and an annotated bibliography. A champion of both Edinburgh and Scotland, Rankin continues to combine engaging entertainment with socio-political commentary showing Edinburgh as a microcosm of Scotland, and Scotland as a microcosm of the world. His writing investigates questions of Scottish identity, British history, masculinity, and contemporary culture while providing mystery readers with complex, suspenseful plots, realistic character development, and a unique mix of American hard-boiled and procedural styles with Scottish dialects and sensibilities.
McKee Rankin and the Heyday of the American Theater

McKee Rankin and the Heyday of the American Theater

Beasley David

McKee Rankin burst upon the theater world in the 1860s. By the age of twenty-one, Rankin, a Canadian by birth, had become leading man at the Arch Street Theatre in Philadelphia, considered to be the best theater in the country. A matinee idol and a superb character actor, he formed one of the first combination companies to tour America. He wrote successful Western dramas, in which he and his wife, the famous Kitty Blanchard, created unforgettable characters. He built a theater in New York City and one in San Francisco where, in the 1880s, he created a nationally famous repertory theater. Persevering, intelligent, and dedicated, his passion for the theater brought him into conflict with the commercial attitudes of managers. Throughout his ups and downs, from riches to poverty, from handsome man to obese alcoholic, he continued to create great roles. When Rankin died in 1914, the brilliant innovations of this actor-manager, playwright, and director had changed theater forever. This thoroughly documented biography is also a lively story of one of the most important, but least known, periods of American theater, encompassing a wealth of information about great but forgotten actors, a fascinating account of the relationship between the stage and its audience, and several rediscovered, once famous, plays. Students of acting, historians of the theater, and those interested in the cultural development of a continent will find the book invaluable. All readers will be entranced by a world from which today's entertainment emerged.
