Listen to the Beat of the Drum: Essence of Servant Leadership

Listen to the Beat of the Drum: Essence of Servant Leadership

Rashid Faisal

Black Ivy Scholar Publications

nidottu
In this small volume, Rashid Faisal, addresses the void in American leadership through the lens of Dr. King's servant leadership philosophy and his social activism during the Civil Rights movement. In eight lectures contained within the pages of this modest text, Faisal challenges the reader to embrace a new definition of leadership based on five servant leadership principles found in studying the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This text represents a small contribution to the global commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's assassination on April 4, 1968. The 50th anniversary of King's tragic death marks an opportunity for leaders to reflect on the triad of social injustices King identified during the last years of his life: racism, materialism and militarism.

Rashid and his friends Gary and Chris witness a robbery at Miss Wilson's house, but the police find no evidence of a break-in. The boys' investigation leads them to the death of a Royal Air Force pilot during the Battle of Britain and an old map marking the location of a precious diamond. They also discover, however, that they are not the only ones searching for the diamond. Throughout the story, we learn about Rashid and his family and some of the tensions Muslim families face in the modern world. We also see how Islamic values can be applied to everyday life.

From his early self-portraits to his site-specific installations, this volume underscores Rashid Johnson's fearless engagement with the central themes, questions and aesthetics of the contemporary era Co-organized by the Guggenheim New York and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, A Poem for Deep Thinkers is a three-decade survey of Rashid Johnson’s artistic career. It situates the artist within three interconnected spheres: as a scholar of art history; as a mediator of Black popular culture and its widespread commodification; and as an artist engaged with the globalization of contemporary art. The exhibition and accompanying catalog feature nearly 90 artworks, including early photographs, Cosmic Slops, spray-painted text works, collage paintings, Broken Men mosaics, film projects, and key sculptures and installations that incorporate materials such as shea butter, black soap, plants, ceramic vessels and wax. These explorations demonstrate Johnson’s uncommon fluency with multiple materials and forms as well as a nuanced ability to synthesize the condition of the human psyche. Lavishly produced with gold block edges and illustrated with more than 200 images, the publication offers creative meditations on excerpts by literary icons Toni Morrison, Gwendolyn Brooks, Jean Genet, Paul Beatty and Amiri Baraka, interspersed among insightful essays and an interview that further illuminate Johnson’s work. Born and raised in Chicago, Rashid Johnson (born 1977) received fine arts degrees from Columbia College Chicago and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. At the age of 24, his work was included in Thelma Golden’s 2001 exhibition Freestyle at the Studio Museum in Harlem. Johnson made his directorial debut with his 2019 adaptation of Richard Wright’s Native Son.

'Johnson is a leading voice of his generation.' - New York Times The most comprehensive publication to date on widely celebrated artist Rashid Johnson Working with a variety of media that includes painting, sculpture, photography, video, and performance, Rashid Johnson has created a nuanced and iconographic body of work that connects literature, music, and art. Personal references and pervasive cultural narratives are interweaved with the legacy of modernist abstraction, producing what critics have labelled 'conceptual post-black art'. A precocious talent (his work was included in the seminal 'Freestyle' exhibition in New York in 2001), Johnson received the High Museum of Art’s David C. Driskell Prize, which honours contributions in the field of African-American art.
Rashid Johnson: Heart Turned Inside Out Poems
An intimate collaboration between mother and son, bringing together poems by Cheryl Johnson-Odim and drawings by her son, the acclaimed American artist Rashid Johnson.Poems by Cheryl Johnson-Odim, Rashid Johnson’s mother, are accompanied here by a selection of Johnson’s drawings and a far-ranging conversation between mother and son.The book is based on an updated version of Johnson-Odim’s Other Women Before Me—first published in 1985, the year Rashid turned eight years old. In 2022, Johnson presented the stapled pamphlet—along with titles by the likes of Amiri Baraka, Nikki Giovanni, Claudia Rankine and Sylvia Plath—in a reading area accompanying his exhibition ‘Sodade’ at Hauser & Wirth Menorca, where the artwork featured on the cover of this publication was also on view.
Rashid Johnson. Within Our Gates
Since 2001, Rashid Johnson has risen to international attention with his powerfully visual statements on contemporary culture. Working across painting, photography, sculpture, installation, video, and performance, the artist has charted a trajectory that offers fresh readings of art history, social history, psychology, and literature. This book follows the making of the artist's largest work to date: an immersive, living ecosystem where fact, fiction, history, and mythology converge. Described by the artist as a "brain" that prioritizes poetic rather than logical reason, the work offers unexpected associations between objects, video, and sound-untethered from their cultural roots-to provide nuanced readings on cliches of class, nation, and race. The first publication to follow the development of Johnson's sculptural and installation works, this volume by Garage Chief Curator Kate Fowle includes an interview with the artist and an extensive essay which investigates Johnson's influences and references.

Vaikka kirjan nimistä osa on muutettua, on Rashid itse valmis kertomaan tarinansa omilla kasvoillaan.

This book discusses various dynamic facets of the life of Rashid al-Ghannushi?¯, a distinguished Islamic thinker and activist not only in Tunisia and North Africa, but in the entire Muslim world. It especially focuses on those aspects related to his intellectual understanding and response to a number of critical contemporary issues. In the 21st Century, Rashid al-Ghannushi?¯ is considered as the most moderate among the Muslim thinkers and intellectuals, particularly when it comes to the question of Islam-democracy compatibility and power sharing theory. This book also offers an account of a previously little known, yet much talked about Muslim voice in the post-Arab Spring era. It further shows how the intellectual Muslim thinkers’ own perspectives and expectations from Islamic movement(s) and their interaction with the ‘western oriented local leadership’, as well as their (secular) policies color their understanding of Islam and various other major issues.

Forty years ago, as a young scholar in Islamic Studies at the University of Alberta, Al Rashid's Muslims welcomed my queries, tolerated my ignorance, and joyfully opened their homes and their hearts. Edmonton's Al Rashid Mosque has played a key role in Islam's Canadian development. Founded by Muslims from Lebanon, it has grown into a vibrant community fully integrated into Canada's cultural mosaic. The mosque continues to be a concrete expression of social good, a symbol of a proud Muslim-Canadian identity. Al Rashid Mosque provides a welcome introduction to the ethics and values of homegrown Muslims. The book traces the mosque's role in education and community leadership, and celebrates the numerous contributions of Muslim Canadians in Edmonton and across Canada. Written to mark the 75th anniversary of the mosque's opening in 1938, Al Rashid Mosque is a timely and important volume of Islamic and Canadian history.
