The story of the Virk family is set against a tragic backdrop that remains one of the most widely discussed crimes of our time. On the night of November 14, 1997, 14-year-old Reena Virk, a troubled Victoria high-school student, was swarmed and beaten by a group of teenagers and eventually killed. At the time, Reena's father Manjit, a soft-spoken, sensitive immigrant from the Punjab state of India, had already been let down by both social-services and law-enforcement authorities. He and his wife, Suman, had struggled with the challenges of conflicting cultures and religions, of family dissension and child-rearing ideologies, and with allegations of wrongdoing and the resulting tarnished reputations. In the aftermath of Reena's murder, it was Suman who spoke for the family. Now, for the first time, Manjit tells his story, speaking from the heart about his life with Reena; the spiralling events that led to yet more angst and frustration for the family; his lingering concerns about a badly fractured social-support and legal system; and the faith that pulled him through the most trying times of his life.

Reena Spaulings
A novel set in post-9/11 New York City about a supermodel and the ultimate Broadway blockbuster.Set in post-9/11 New York City, Reena Spaulings was written by a large collective of writers and artists that bills itself as The Bernadette Corporation. Like most contemporary fiction, Reena Spaulings is about a female twenty-something. Reena is discovered while working as a museum guard and becomes a rich international supermodel. Meanwhile, a bout of terrible weather seizes New York, leaving in its wake a strange form of civil disobedience that stirs its citizens to mount a musical song-and-dance riot called "Battle on Broadway." Fashioned in the old Hollywood manner by a legion of professional and amateur writers striving to achieve the ultimate blockbuster, the musical ends up being about a nobody who could be anybody becoming a somebody for everybody. The result is generic and perfect-not unlike Reena Spaulings itself, whose many authors create a story in which New York itself strives to become the ultimate collective experiment in which the only thing shared is the lack of uniqueness.

Reena Saini Kallat: Deep Rivers Run Quiet
Transboundary – Exposing the Porosity of the Concept of National Borders Reena Saini Kallat’s practice evolves around the tension between the concept of barriers in a world fundamentally shaped by mobility and interaction. Exploring the divisive narratives around national and geopolitical borders and their impact on identity and self-image for people and their immediate environment, she is also concerned with social and psychological barriers. That barriers give way, and can be subverted, is an idea that is pronounced in Kallat’s work using electric cables twisted to resemble barbed wire. She uses the paradox of the existence of technology for free flow of information and restriction on movement. In order to expose the ambiguity of national narratives, the figure of the hybrid has come to hold symbolic potential in her practice, as a truant against dividing lines: Kallat creates hybrids of animals and plants that are strongly associated with national identity, only to show that nature defies the violent cleaving through land and nature, and uses the motif of the river, which is often both, border and lifeline to both sides. Kallat’s work reveals the idea of isolation as an illusion, and instead suggests to embrace a pluralism of cultures.
