In On Divine Revelation—one of Garrigou-Lagrange's most significant works, here available in English for the very first time—he offers a classic treatment of this foundational topic. It is an organized and thorough defense of both the rationality and supernaturality of divine revelation. He presents a careful yet stimulating account of the scientific character of theology, the nature of revelation itself, mystery, dogma, the grace of faith, the powers of human reason, false interpretations thereof (rationalism, naturalism, agnosticism, and pantheism), the motives of credibility, and much more.Though written a century ago, On Divine Revelation will restore confidence in theology as a distinct and unified science and return focus to the fundamental questions of the doctrine of revelation. It also serves as a salutary corrective to contemporary theology's anthropocentrism and concern with what is relative in revelation and religious experience by reorienting our theological attention to what is most certain, central, and sure in our knowledge of divine revelation: the Triune God who has revealed his inner life and salvific will.Readers will see the great splendor of the gift of divine revelation: radiant with credibility before the gaze of reason and drawing our supernatural assent to the mysteries through the gift of faith. As Fr. Cajetan Cuddy, O.P. observes, “On Divine Revelation . . . is a stunning work of inestimable value. No other subsequent work on this topic has come close to meeting it (much less surpassing it).”

Fr. R ginald Garrigou-Lagrange, O.P., explains why Thomism is the solution to the present crisis of Modernism in the Church. The problem: The indications of the current crisis in the Church have "been not of a crisis of faith, but of a very grave malady of the intellect, which conducts itself on the tracks of liberal Protestantism and through relativism to absolute skepticism." Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange's solution: Thomism. "Thomism corresponds to the profound needs of the modern world because it restores the love of truth for the sake of truth itself. Now, without this love of truth for itself, it is not possible to obtain true infused charity, the supernatural love of God for the sake of God Himself, nor to arrive at the infused contemplation of God sought for Himself, that is, at the contemplation that proceeds from the living faith enriched by the gifts of the Holy Spirit, first of all, knowledge and wisdom."

This is an updated edition of the English translation published in 1963 based on Volume I of Le Corps Mystique du Christ: Fr. Ernest Mura's classic treatment of the doctrine of the Mystical Body of Christ originally published in French in 1934. It also features the first-ever English translation of Fr. R ginald Garrigou-Lagrange's preface found in the original French edition. The unity of the total Christ and his supernatural activity are the two aspects of the theology of the Mystical Body. Father Mura's present study limits itself to the first aspect, which is the most delicate problem of all: "You are the Body of Christ" (1 Cor. 12:27). The question of how to understand this bold assertion of St. Paul has been asked by many theologians, who, nevertheless, have not attempted to answer it; perhaps they fear that explanations which are too human may mar the beauty of the dogma of our incorporation into Christ Jesus. Hence, they do not explain wherein consists the organic and vital cohesion that makes of Jesus and ourselves a single "total Christ." Viewing the building up of the Mystical Body from the vantage point of the author's synthesis, the reader will see in it the great recapitulation in Christ, to which all the works of God are ordered for the salvation of the human race. Once the revealed truths that are most familiar to us-the notion of grace, the sacrament of baptism, the dogma of the spiritual motherhood of Mary-are seen in their relationship to the total doctrine, they take on a breadth, a supernatural beauty, and a practical significance that we did not suspect.
