Charles Peirce's Theory of Scientific Method

Charles Peirce's Theory of Scientific Method

Reilly Francis E.

FORDHAM UNIVERSITY PRESS

This book is an attempt to understand a significant part of the complex thought of Charles Sanders Peirce, especially in those areas which interested him most: scientific method and related philosophical questions. It is organized primarily from Peirce's own writings, taking chronological settings into account where appropriate, and pointing out the close connections of several major themes in Peirce's work which show the rich diversity of his thought and its systematic unity. Following an introductory sketch of Peirce the thinking and writer is a study of the spirit and phases of scientific inquiry, and a consideration of its relevance to certain outstanding philosophical views which Peirce held. This double approach is necessary because his views on scientific method are interlaces with a profound and elaborate philosophy of the cosmos. Peirce's thought is unusually close-knit, and his difficulty as a writer lies in his inability to achieve a partial focus without bringing into view numerous connections and relations with the whole picture of reality. Peirce received some of the esteem he deserves when the publication of his Collected Papers began more than thirty-five years ago. Some reviewers and critics, however, have attempted to fit Peirce into their own molds in justification of a particular position; others have disinterestedly sought to present him in completely detached fashion. Here, the author has attempted to understand Peirce as Peirce intended himself to be understood, and has presented what he believes Perice's philosophy of scientific method to be. He singles out for praise Peirce's Greek insistence on the primacy of theoretical knowledge and his almost Teilhardian synthesis of evolutionary themes. Primarily philosophical, this volume analyzes Peirce's thought using a theory of knowledge and metaphysics rather than formal logic.

The battle at Fredericksburg, Virginia, in December 1862 involved hundreds of thousands of men; produced staggering, unequal casualties (13,000 Federal soldiers compared to 4,500 Confederates); ruined the career of Ambrose E. Burnside; embarrassed Abraham Lincoln; and distinguished Robert E. Lee as one of the greatest military strategists of his era. Francis Augustín O'Reilly draws upon his intimate knowledge of the battlegrounds to discuss the unprecedented nature of Fredericksburg's warfare. Lauded for its vivid description, trenchant analysis, and meticulous research, his award-winning book makes for compulsive reading.

The Battle of Malvern Hill on July 1, 1862, marked the climax of the Seven Days’ Battles around Richmond, Virginia. For the first time since the Civil War began, the full might of Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan’s Union Army of the Potomac and Gen. Robert E. Lee’s Confederate Army of Northern Virginia met. The world watched and wondered as this high-stakes combat played out on the doorstep of the Confederate capital. McClellan’s army emerged victorious with its superior positions and overwhelming artillery firepower. Yet, McClellan retreated from victory to establish a safe base on the James River. Lee’s army secured a default victory simply by holding the battlefield and saving Richmond from capture. Francis Augustín O’Reilly’s long-awaited Retreat from Victory: The Battle of Malvern Hill and the End of the Seven Days, July 1, 1862 is the first book-length treatment of this critical and pivotal battle. O’Reilly examines the singular struggle at Malvern Hill in depth and from a wide variety of perspectives, including its implications for the war, the armies, the opposing governments, the people, and slavery. He pieces together the tactical movements of troops on the battlefield and the intentions of leaders on the front lines and in the halls of government in Washington, D.C., and Richmond. Above all, he gives voice to the soldiers, sharing their experiences in combat and on campaign. Two decades in the making, Retreat from Victory draws on hundreds of primary sources—many previously unused—including official records, diaries, newspapers, and regimental histories. O’Reilly’s sound and reasoned conclusions are grounded in his deep archival research and keen understanding of the complex terrain. This climactic Civil War battle elevated General Lee’s career and marked the beginning of the end of General McClellan’s. It was a watershed moment when the Civil War transformed from a rebellion into a revolution. The war grew exponentially larger and more brutal—and ultimately doomed slavery in America. O’Reilly’s Retreat from Victory provides a definitive account of the Battle of Malvern Hill, setting a standard that will endure for the foreseeable future.

What’s written about us by non-Roma is a stereotypical image that’s both romantic and vilified. Parramisha challenges the reader to reconstruct a new image as a life affirming narrative of our wholeness as a Romani identity.
