How do women artists in Russia, Estonia and Latvia view themselves in the post-Soviet era? What is their relationship to feminism and how has that relationship changed following the fall of the Soviet regime? Having conducted over 60 interviews between 1995 and 1998, Renee and Matthew Baigell explore in this volume these women's difficulties of pursuing an art career in a male-dominated society, and the attitudes of their male counterparts toward feminist concerns. The artists interviewed - some born as early as the 1920s, others as recently as the 1970s - discuss their private lives and situations, as well as specific works of art. They reveal a wide range of attitudes and a complex relationship with a feminist movement often regarded as an alien import from the West. Gender issues in art school, parental attitudes toward the prospect of their daughters becoming artists, the demands and strains of career and family life, and questions regarding a female approach to imagery are among the topics raised, as are these artists' hopes and dreams for the future. This book also includes a brief chronology of pertinent art exhibitions during the 1990s.

This book addresses the question: how effective are countries in promoting the innovation needed to facilitate an energy transition? Chapters explore energy policy and institutions, innovation policy in general, as well as energy innovation in key countries, including the US, Germany, the UK, China, Japan and Korea, and the EU. At the heart of Energy Innovation for the 21st Century is a fascinating set of international empirical case studies covering supply and demand side technologies at different levels of maturity. These are set within an analytical framework encompassing the functions of technological innovation systems and innovation metrics. The book explores energy, science and technology policies, contextualising the case studies to aid the assessment of the overall performance of innovation systems. Drawing together lessons for energy innovation policy and institutional design, this book is a much-needed resource for sustainability and innovation scholars and researchers. Policy-makers and practitioners will also benefit from the practical advice offered in this timely volume.

Rene Girard interrogates the Brahmanas of Vedic India, exploring coincidences with mimetic theory that are too numerous and striking to be accidental. Recognizing that the Vedic tradition also converges on a revelation that discredits sacrifice, mimetic theory locates within sacrifice itself a paradoxical power of quiet reflection that leads, in the long run, to the eclipse of this institution which is violent but nevertheless fundamental to the development of human culture. Far from unduly privileging the Western tradition and awarding it a monopoly on the knowledge and repudiation of blood sacrifice, mimetic analysis recognizes comparable, but never truly identical, traits in the Vedic tradition."

Appointments focuses in on The Flint Water Crisis from the point of view of a doctor's office. The narrator, a nurse, provides insight while the families share their stories. This play is appropriate for high school and middle grades. College drama programs may wish to adapt it for a younger adult audience as well. The play zeroes in on the facts such as: since April 2014, between 6,000-12,000 children have been exposed to toxic levels of lead that may lead to serious health issues in their futures including emotional and behavioral side effects as well as nutritional deficiencies. The poisonous water is also a probable cause of Legionnaires disease which has killed 10 people and infected at least 77 adults since 2014. Additionally it's a likely factor in the uprise of Flint area miscarriages since 2014 amongst the women in Flint community. At this point, people are finally being charged with crimes and the water is continuously tested, but politicians still are not helping like the community has begged and the sense of mistrust pervades society. This issue does not heed social status, race, ethnicity, sex, gender, or education-it affects us all. It is a humanity issue and this play appoints the audience as activists.

This uniquely designed book presents the first survey of contemporary artist Toni Dove's pioneering work at the crossroads of performance, cinema, and virtual reality. Credited as one of the innovators of "interactive cinema," since the early 1990s, Toni Dove has created an oeuvre of "speculative technology" blending computer driven interactivity, live-mix performance and installation in projects which examine histories of consumer culture through evolving technologies. Dove's collaborative practice brings together visual artists, filmmakers, fashion designers, robotics engineers, computer programmers, musicians, actors, and writers-each at the vanguard of his or her own metier. Accompanying a major exhibition, this distinctively designed volume presents four of Dove's most notable works, including the debut of her newest work The Dress That Eats Souls, which exists at the forefront of computer and robotic technology.

In the fall of 2008, fifteen of the world's leading economists--representing the broadest spectrum of economic opinion--gathered at New Hampshire's Squam Lake. Their goal: the mapping of a long-term plan for financial regulation reform. The Squam Lake Report distills the wealth of insights from the ongoing collaboration that began at these meetings and provides a revelatory, unified, and coherent voice for fixing our troubled and damaged financial markets. As an alternative to the patchwork solutions and ideologically charged proposals that have dominated other discussions, the Squam Lake group sets forth a clear nonpartisan plan of action to transform the regulation of financial markets--not just for the current climate--but for generations to come. Arguing that there has been a conflict between financial institutions and society, these diverse experts present sound and transparent prescriptions to reduce this divide. They look at the critical holes in the existing regulatory framework for handling complex financial institutions, retirement savings, and credit default swaps. They offer ideas for new financial instruments designed to recapitalize banks without burdening taxpayers. To lower the risk that large banks will fail, the authors call for higher capital requirements as well as a systemic regulator who is part of the central bank. They collectively analyze where the financial system has failed, and how these weak points should be overhauled. Combining an immense depth of academic, private sector, and public policy experience, The Squam Lake Report contains urgent recommendations that will positively influence everyone's financial well-being--all who care about the world's economic health need to pay attention.
