Tracing Our Genetic Mutations

Tracing Our Genetic Mutations

In Central West Africa over a quarter of a million years ago, mankind evolved to become the very first known genetically and anatomically modern humansHomo sapiens. One hundred forty thousand years ago, some of these modern humans migrated to the Great Rift Valley and Ethiopia, where almost all non-African people living today originated. More than seventy thousand years ago, some of their descendants moved across the Red Sea to the Arabian Peninsula, where 90 percent of the worlds existing non-African population originated. Many thousands of years later, some of these hunter-gatherers moved north. Because of climate change, their black skin changed to the olive brown of the Middle East, and some of them later migrated to the Caucasus and the Southern Eurasian Steppe grasslands. A few went east to Siberia and Northern Asia and eventually to the Americas, mutations changing their bodily features as they went. Others moved east and south, to India and Australasia. Forty thousand years ago, after moving farther north to the vast colder Northern Eurasian Steppes, mutations again took place, with the people adapting to the climate by changing their hair, skin, and eye color to a lighter hue. My own paternal haplogroup eventually moved west from the Eurasian Steppes to the fjords of Norway, becoming Viking warriors who raided the British Isles. They eventually settled here in the eleventh century with the family name Manningham, changing to Glover in the seventeenth century. My maternal ancestors moved from being some of the first farmers in Anatolia to become the Anglo-Saxons in North West Europe who invaded and settled in South East England over 1,400 years ago. Over the centuries, some members of these families settled in the United States of America, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, helping to build these new countries to what they are today. Some towns and cities are named after them. If you are a member of one of these now-very-wide families or simply interested in the early history of mankind, I hope you will find this little book of interest. Richard Donovan Glover

Washington was the first to have a voter-approved state Equal Rights Amendment. It was the first state to elect a woman as governor, and the first to elect a Chinese-American to the position. Still today, the state's political affairs take unexpected twists and turns as voters continue to speak out and introduce change. Governing Washington provides an absorbing look at an evolving state political system and presents intriguing case studies.Readers will learn how the state charter of rights differs significantly from the federal Bill of Rights. They will examine the impact of special interest groups and the increasing use of the initiative process. They will be introduced to the complex budget realities facing states in the twenty-first century. With chapters on public opinion, the court system, the legislature, the political parties, budgeting, changing demographics, and more, this volume updates the popular Washington State Government and Politics, offering fresh discussions and analysis from top political authorities throughout the state.

As collaboratives increasingly make a difference in educational reform, a growing number of states are examining the entire K-16 system and exploring ways to connect educational levels and systems to better serve students—especially those at-risk and underrepresented. The Collaborative Advantage contributes to the field by documenting the benefits of a collaborative, K-16 approach to educational reform and by providing a comprehensive set of lessons and recommendations developed by inter-institutional collaboratives from around the United States. This jargon-free book identifies three critical stages in the development of a collaborative: foundation-building, growth, and making collaboration a sustainable force for reform. Numerous challenges, solutions, and examples are provided for each stage. To further assist practitioners, the authors identify three partnership types—program, pathway, and policy. This book will be of interest to administrators, practitioners in both higher education and K-12, and faculty who teach courses in education, sociology, public policy, and organizational behavior.
Beyond Blue: Echoes of Color: Art from Richard J Donovan Correctional Facility A coloring book by incarcerated people
This is a coloring book entirely created by incarcerated artists Project PAINT: The Prison Arts INiTiative (projectpaint.org) is a visual arts organization that provides Arts in Corrections programming at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, CA and California State Prison, Centinela in Imperial, CA. Project PAINT offered a "Coloring Book Design" course to the people on Facility E (Echo Yard) at Donovan. This is a compilation of the images the students submitted for the book. Any money raised by the sale of this book will 100% be used for further classes and additional art supplies for Project PAINT participants. Learn more at projectpaint.org. Thank you for your support Statement from the artists in the class: "Artistic expression is important to us as artists to maintain our connection with our free spirits - free to create and experience freedom, expressing ourselves and finding comfort in our art. Some of us who create are working out our "issues," or keeping our cultural traditions alive. We give life to our stories, visions, and dreams with our art. We express through images the changes we experience being incarcerated. We wanted to be involved in this project to create this coloring book, joining this group of artists with a common goal of promoting restoration - to restore and reconcile ourselves to the outside world. Art is important to this process as it is the medium through which we are able to express and create beauty. Touching these elements of beauty continuously creates a reflection or echo that manifests in the life of the artist. We want the world to know that beautiful things can come from prison. We want you to slow down and be more aware of life and the world around you. Experience the simple things we all miss being incarcerated." -The Coloring Book Design Class, 2019
Analysis with Ultrasmall Numbers

Analysis with Ultrasmall Numbers presents an intuitive treatment of mathematics using ultrasmall numbers. With this modern approach to infinitesimals, proofs become simpler and more focused on the combinatorial heart of arguments, unlike traditional treatments that use epsilon–delta methods. Students can fully prove fundamental results, such as the Extreme Value Theorem, from the axioms immediately, without needing to master notions of supremum or compactness. The book is suitable for a calculus course at the undergraduate or high school level or for self-study with an emphasis on nonstandard methods. The first part of the text offers material for an elementary calculus course while the second part covers more advanced calculus topics. The text provides straightforward definitions of basic concepts, enabling students to form good intuition and actually prove things by themselves. It does not require any additional "black boxes" once the initial axioms have been presented. The text also includes numerous exercises throughout and at the end of each chapter.

Beyond Adolescence traces the lives of adolescents and youth from the late 1960s into the late seventies and early eighties. It is unusual because of the period of time in which the study took place, as well as because of the portion of the lifespan it covers - early adulthood. Concerned with understanding the role of problem behaviour in young adulthood and the factors that influence it, the study also traces outcomes on young adulthood of earlier involvements in problem behaviour, with an emphasis on personality and social environment. The research extends and tests the theoretical framework that guided the study - Problem Behaviour Theory - and shows its usefulness for understanding young adult problem behaviour and development.

Security Force Assistance is analyzed, and some specific recommendations designed to improve U.S. performance are provided. While SFA may be a new term, the activities themselves are familiar ones related to how the Department of Defense works to train, advise, and assist foreign partners' security establishments to accomplish common objectives. The United States has demonstrated serious SFA deficiencies in recent years. As Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has noted, the United States is likely to remain actively and broadly engaged in SFA for many years to come. The need for comprehensive improvement encompasses DoD military and civilian efforts and requires thoughtful integration with broader whole of government approaches.

Description: Faith & Co: Business on Purpose is the official study guide to accompany the compelling documentary film series. Designed especially for groups, the guide incorporates the films into an easy to use 10-week format. The guide thematically frames and sequences the films, offers theological insights, and provides provocative discussion questions and reflection exercises. The guide also incorporates dozens of additional interview excerpts with cast members as well as with other business leaders and theologians at the forefront of the faith at work movement. Featuring stories from around the globe, the film series profiles business leaders who are reimagining business as a calling to serve God and neighbor and explores implications for spiritual formation, ethics, managing, selling, design, serving neighbors and care for creation. Praise for Faith & Co: Business on Purpose: "The Faith & Co documentaries and film clips are the best I've seen on Faith and Work. The Study Guide is well thought out and structured. I can't recommend it more highly, for individuals, Bible studies, workplace groups. But beware, you are likely to be challenged and changed by it." Dr. Gordon Preece, Priest-in-Charge, Yarraville Anglican Parish and Director of Ethos, and Religion & Social Policy at the University of Divinity, Melbourne. "Faith & Co. is about depth. Deeper thinking of what it means to see that business itself is ministry. The inspiring, well-crafted films let us inside the hearts and minds of Kingdom business practitioners who have thought long and hard about what it means to live love, give opportunity, guard human dignity, and steward well the creation God has gifted us. Unfortunately, much of the conversation about connecting faith and work in the business sector just scratches the surface. Faith & Co. is theologically richer, digging into the implications of creation, fall, redemption, and new creation for everyday business. This isn't "5 Tips for Successful Business." This is wisdom for the long haul." Amy L. Sherman, Ph.D., author, Kingdom Calling: Vocational Stewardship for the Common Good "Faith & Co: Business on Purpose succeeds in the hardest task of faith-work integration-helping you figure out how your work matters to God, not just how work in general matters. Oriented primarily towards entrepreneurs, managers and professionals, Faith & Co., uniquely integrates biblical faithfulness with practical application. Incomparable for today's generation of Christians who work."Will Messenger, Executive Editor, Theology of Work Project
