This Third Edition of ELECTRONS IN SOLIDS: AN INTRODUCTORY SURVEY, is the result of a thorough re-examination of the entire text, incorporating suggestions and corrections by students and professors who have used the text. Explanations and descriptions have been expanded, and additional information has been added on high Tc superconductors, diamond films, "buckminsterfullerenes," and thin magnetic materials. Adopted by many colleges and universities, this text has proven to be a solid introduction to the electrical, optical and magnetic properties of materials.
Photoelectronic Properties of Semiconductors

Photoelectronic Properties of Semiconductors

Richard H. Bube

Cambridge University Press
1992
pokkari
The interaction between light and electrons in semiconductors forms the basis for many interesting and practically significant properties. This book examines the fundamental physics underlying this rich complexity of photoelectronic properties of semiconductors, and will familiarise the reader with the relatively simple models that are useful in describing these fundamentals. The basic physics is also illustrated with typical recent examples of experimental data and observations. Following introductory material on the basic concepts, the book moves on to consider a wide range of phenomena, including photoconductivity, recombination effects, photoelectronic methods of defect analysis, photoeffects at grain boundaries, amorphous semiconductors, photovoltaic effects and photoeffects in quantum wells and superlattices. The author is Professor of Materials Science and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, and has taught this material for many years. He is an experienced author, his earlier books having found wide acceptance and use. Readers will therefore find this volume to be an up-to-date and concise summary of the major concepts, models and results. It is intended as a text for graduate students, but will be an important resource for anyone researching in this interesting field.
Putting It All Together

Putting It All Together

A thinking person can hardly avoid developing some kind of pattern within which to express a personal reaction to both scientific and theological inputs. Bube works to clarify the identity of these possible patterns for relating science and the Christian faith, to give examples, and to provide a balanced critique of each. Such an understanding of the issues involved is essential for mature Christians living in a world dominated by the concepts and artifacts of science. Contents: A Look at the Issues; Authentic Science; Authentic Christian Theology; Pattern 1: Science Has Destroyed Christian Theology; Pattern 2: Christian Theology in Spite of Science; Pattern 3: Science and Christian Theology are Unrelated; Pattern 4: Science Demands Christian Theology; Pattern 5: Science Redefines Christian Theology; Pattern 6: A New Synthesis of Science and Christian Theology; Pattern 7: Christian Theology and Science: Complementary Insights; Epilogue: A Christian Philosophy of Science.

Research and development of photovoltaic solar cells is playing an ever larger practical role in energy supply and ecological conservation all over the world. Many materials science problems are encountered in understanding existing solar cells and the development of more efficient, less costly, and more stable cells. This important and timely book provides a historical overview, but concentrates primarily on exciting developments in the last decade. It describes the properties of the materials that play an important role in photovoltaic applications, the solar cell structures in which they are used, and the experimental and theoretical developments that have led to the most promising contenders.
Photo-induced Defects in Semiconductors

Photo-induced Defects in Semiconductors

David Redfield; Richard H. Bube

Cambridge University Press
2006
pokkari
This is the first book to give a complete overview of the properties of deep-level, localized defects in semiconductors. Such comparatively long-lived (or metastable) defects exhibit complex interactions with the surrounding material, and can significantly affect the performance and stability of certain semiconductor devices. After an introductory discussion of metastable defects, the properties of DX and EL2 centres in III–V compounds are presented. Additional crystalline materials are also dealt with, before a detailed description is given of the properties and kinetics of photo-induced defects in amorphous semiconductors. The book closes with an examination of the effects of photo-induced defects in a range of practical applications. Throughout, unifying concepts and models are stressed, and the book will be of great use to graduate students and researchers interested in the physics and materials science of semiconductors.

An Analysis of Richard H. Thaler and Cass R. Sunstein's Nudge
When it was published in 2008, Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein’s Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth, and Happiness quickly became one of the most influential books in modern economics and politics. Within a short time, it had inspired whole government departments in the US and UK, and others as far afield as Singapore. One of the keys to Nudge’s success is Thaler and Sunstein’s ability to create a detailed and persuasive case for their take on economic decision-making. Nudge is not a book packed with original findings or data; instead it is a careful and systematic synthesis of decades of research into behavioral economics. The discipline challenges much conventional economic thought – which works on the basis that, overall, humans make rational decisions – by focusing instead on the ‘irrational’ cognitive biases that affect our decision making. These seemingly in-built biases mean that certain kinds of economic decision-making are predictably irrational. Thaler and Sunstein prove themselves experts at creating persuasive arguments and dealing effectively with counter-arguments. They conclude that if governments understand these cognitive biases, they can ‘nudge’ us into making better decisions for ourselves. Entertaining as well as smart, Nudge shows the full range of reasoning skills that go into making a persuasive argument.

The Papers Of Col. Richard H. Gilliam Of Buckingham County, Virginia
"The data contained in this publication are based on the personal letters, documents, and sheriff receipt book of Colonel Richard Holland Gilliam. Some of the papers are personal in nature; most relate to his activities as Deputy Sheriff of Buckingham County." As Deputy Sheriff, his duties included "the serving of papers from the county court and the execution of other actions of the county government including the collection of fines, taxes, court claims and other debts. The great importance of these papers largely stems from their being the only source of information on certain activities of the county government prior to the courthouse fire of 1869. These papers date from 1825 to 1870." Papers include summons, adjudged debts, promissory notes, receipts, bonds, fines, tax assessments, and personal accounts. Approximately 1200 persons are mentioned. A brief genealogy of the Gilliam family is included. A full-name index adds to the value of this work.
