In The Wallace-White Family: Images, Letters, and Legacies, Richard White takes an innovative approach to connecting with his 16 great-great grandparents, 8 great-grandparents, and 4 grandparents plus one. Using black-and-white photos from the 1860s to the 2020s, White uses brief biographies as springboards for letters to his ancestors. He asks his great-great grandparents, Alexander McRobbie and Wilhelm Christian Sauer, why they left their native Scotland and Germany in the 1850s and what it was like to settle in their adopted communities of Milford, New Hampshire and Brooklyn, New York. The answers to Whites' questions about his relatives' lives, their decisions and motivations, their triumphs and sorrows, are lost in time and in the distant past. But the very act of posing the questions and imagining their answers gives White a profound sense of engaging in conversation with his ancestors. He feels closer to them than ever before--and this is the hope he shares with his readers.

Richard White has always enjoyed writing family history and stories. His four previous books include a family history, two books of travelogues, and letters to his ancestors. In My Life in Stories and Photos, his autobiography, Richard connects the stories of his youth and adulthood with over 130 photos from 1950 to 2023. He writes, "This book is a far cry from the detailed draft of my autobiography, which I wrote in the 2000's. It was hiding for years in a thick three-ring binder in the basement, and it only went as far as New Year's Eve 2000. I wondered, 'How should I tell my story' I opted for a substantially pruned-down narrative complemented by photos capturing special moments in my life through the years. So many details have been left out. But I hope what I have included here will be an interesting and at times compelling story."

The Roads We Have Traveled, Volume 2, Richard L. White collects his travel writings beginning with Kerstin's and his trip to Mexico in April 2009 and concluding with a family vacation in Boulder, Colorado in December 2019 at the very end of the decade. While the coronavirus pandemic brought a sudden halt to the Whites' travels, it was the perfect time to pause, reflect, and bring this collection together. Volume 2 complements the first volume, published in 2009 and covering nearly four decades of travel (1970-2008). The 44 travelogues in Volume 2 include Richard's recollections and observations of visits to a number of foreign countries and states, almost always in the company of Kerstin. While she primarily documents their travels through photography, Richard is always capturing an experience, a moment, an image, or a feeling through the written word. This is also the story of the personal growth of Richard, Kerstin, and their children Janine, Lisa, and Windy, as they complete their graduate and undergraduate degrees and forge new lives and new purposes in the broad field of education in New York, Miami, Chicago, San Francisco, and London. Throughout the book, Richard demonstrates his love of travel, writing, observation, history, culture, and memory, passions that he shares with Kerstin and has passed on to his children.

Blacks in the White Establishment?

Blacks in the White Establishment?

Richard L. Zweigenhaft; G. William Domhoff

“The next thing the girl said was, ‘I’ve never been near anyone black except for my maid.’ And I thought, I’m going to have problems here.”—Bobette Reed Kahn What were the feelings and experiences of the young blacks from economically impoverished backgrounds who in the 1960s were placed in white upper-class prep schools? What do their current attitudes and achievements reveal about the importance of race and class in America? In this sensitive and engrossing book, a social psychologist and a political sociologist report on the early graduates of A Better Chance, a program designed to recruit and prepare minority students for entry into exclusive boarding schools, elite colleges and universities, and ultimately positions of power and prestige. Zwegenhaft and Domhoff’s book is a vivid testimony to the costs and the rewards of this innovative attempt to transcend racial barriers. As Zweigenhaft and Domhoff relate, these young men and women faced difficulties in the dramatic transition from black ghettos to the most exclusive boarding schools in the United States. Yet most not only endured but flourished. We hear their stories about the orientation programs they attended, their experiences in prep schools and colleges, the overt and covert forms of discrimination they faced, and the problems they encountered when they went home again. They discuss the pressures they felt, the friendships they made, the marriage partners they selected, and the frustrations and gratifications in their occupational lives. The question of the relative importance of race and class in the United States is an ongoing controversy among policymakers, educators, and social scientists. Zweigenhaft and Domhoff’s study sheds light on this debate—it concludes that while the importance of class has increased in the past few decades, race is still the paramount factor in the personal and social identity of blacks.

J. Samuel White & Company was the oldest firm on the Admiralty List and built 252 ships for the Royal Navy alone. The yard’s closure in 1966 ended 300 years of shipbuilding during which time the company had gained acclaim from mercantile and naval customers alike. Famed early on for fast Revenue cutters and naval brigs, in its final years Royal Navy destroyers earned it great distinction. Highly innovative, it developed and patented many pioneering products while other innovations included semi-diesel engines, heat exchangers, air conditioners and compressors, besides a range of marine thruster units. Not only did the company build ships and boats but it also constructed a range of marine aircraft. During the First World War, White’s production accounted for 100 ships, including twenty-seven destroyers, and 201 seaplanes. Production during the Second World War added up to 317 ships, among them twenty-six destroyers and a large minelayer. Illustrated with photographs of these and many of the company’s other products, this book tells the story of J. Samuel White and its subsidiary concerns, a business built on a reputation of quality which earned it the slogan: “White’s-built – well-built!”.

A fascinating handbook providing a rare synthesis of the environmental history of northern Europe from the Paleolithic era to the present day. Of interest to students and academics alike, this book provides a much-needed synthesis of the recent literature on northern Europe's environmental history. Beginning with the Paleolithic period and the recolonization of Europe after the Ice Age, this book maps out the key environmental trends in the history of the region's environment and its interaction with the human population. The book also highlights how dramatic events outside Europe, such as the Tomboro volcanic eruption in Indonesia in 1815, had dramatic consequences for the region's climate. Given the culturally diverse nature of modern Europe, a vital aspect of the book is its identification of the common themes that unite the interaction of the region's nation-states with the natural environment. Part of ABC-CLIO's Nature and Human Societies series, the book enables readers to better grasp the extent of humanity's effect on our world.
