This classic book, available in paperback for the very first time, explores why some people can successfully change their lives and others cannot. Here famed psychologist Paul Watzlawick presents what is still often perceived as a radical idea: that the solutions to our problems are inherently embedded in the problems themselves. Tackling the age-old questions surrounding persistence and change, the book asks why problems arise and are perpetuated in some instances but easily resolved in others. Incorporating ideas about human communication, marital and family therapy, the therapeutic effects of paradoxes and of action-oriented techniques of problem resolution, Change draws much from the field of psychotherapy.
It was a snowy night in New England and an unmarried university professor, Jeff, 48, fell in love with one of his graduate students, Rebecca, 35. After 8 months, Jeff gave Rebecca an engagement ring that he had received from his grandmother, and they planned a wedding., Rebecca called Jeff several times during the day, just to say "honey, I love you" or "honey I'm thinking about you and miss you." After Rebecca received her graduate degree, she received a promotion with a large salary increase; however, many events occurred that caused the loving relationship to be challenged. Jeff met Rebecca's old boyfriend, Aaron, and during a conversation, Aaron gave Jeff information that Rebecca did not want to share with Jeff. Disagreements and denials come into their relationship. Rebecca identified with a different group after her promotion, and she spent a few days boating with a group. As she returned to work on Monday, the company was continuing its random drug testing, and Rebecca was selected. She tested positive, and to keep her position, had to agree to spend a short time in a drug-rehab center. Rebecca usually arrives home by 6:30pm, but this Friday night she never called. She arrived home at 9:30pm. Jeff was waiting for her, and she would not explain where she was, except that she had already eaten. She wouldn't explain where or with whom she was with, although Jeff asked many times.Jeff moved back to his condo, and after two weeks, there was still no communication between them. After playing golf with his buddies, Jeff came home to find Rebecca had broken into his condo. As she ripped her shirt and shorts, she told Jeff he was going away for a long time. She opened the door to the condo, yelled rape, and continued to yell rape through the open door. How would Jeff get out of this situation?Jeff continued to ask Rebecca for the return of the engagement ring. She said she sold it at a pawn shop, and although Jeff visited several pawn shops around the New Hampshire area, the ring could not be located. This romance novel has a lot of twists, and the reader wonders if this romance between Jeff and Rebecca will last, or will it be the end of a lovely beginning?
