In recent years, the law relating to entry, search and seizure has undergone major change. Significant legislation, including the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012, has led to the amendment and abolition of powers, creating a complex and dynamic legal landscape. What powers are available? Who may use them? And under what circumstances? A practical guide to the powers available in both criminal and civil proceedings, The Law of Entry, Search and Seizure offers comprehensive analysis of the powers available to the police and other officials in light of all the relevant legislation. It contains exhaustive treatment of police powers both at common law and under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and subsequent legislation such as the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005, including powers of personal search as well as searches of premises. The book also covers the powers of many other officials, such as the HM Revenue and Customs, trading standards officers, and the powers of central and local government officers. Focussing in particular on the most commonly-used powers, but with reference to others which are available, this new edition offers expert analysis of the ways in which powers are typically used, and the constraints which exist in relation to them.

In this adventure-filled narrative, science writer Richard Stone follows two groups of explorers- one a Russian-Japanese team, the other a French-led consortium- as they battle bitter cold, high winds, and supply shortages to carry out their quest. Armed with GPS, ground-penetrating radar, and Soviet-era military helicopters, they seek an elusive prize: a mammoth carcass that will help determine how the creature lived, how it died- and how it might be brought back to life.A riveting tale of high-stakes adventure and scientific hubris, Mammoth is also an intellectual voyage through uncharted moral terrain, as we confront the promise and peril of resurrecting creatures from the deep past.

The Origins of Modern Japanese Philosophy

Nishida Kitaro is widely considered as the first original philosopher in modern Japan. Addressing this claim, Richard Stone critically examines Nishida’s relation to his contemporary philosophers in the Meiji era (1868-1912), highlighting the continuity, difference and relationships between them.Stone reassesses the notion that Nishida’s An Inquiry into the Good (1911) was substantially more philosophically worthwhile than any preceding attempts at philosophy in Japan, whilst demonstrating how his early ideas were heavily influenced by the work of thinkers such as Inoue Enryo, Onishi Hajime and Miyake Setsurei. He argues that original philosophy in Japan did not suddenly start with Nishida. Instead, it developed within a process of methodological refinement, wherein ideas starting from early Meiji philosophers were gradually given more rigorous treatment over the course of the era, eventually culminating in Nishida’s early philosophy.Providing an in-depth analysis of Nishida's work that brings it into dialogue with his predecessors, The Origins of Modern Japanese Philosophy offers both an engaging insight into the Meiji Period as the background of Nishida's philosophical formation and also a clear account of how several core themes in modern Japanese philosophy evolved over the course of an era.
