The multi-faceted Revolutionary War career of Benjamin Tallmadge included operations as a dragoon commander, intelligence and counter-intelligence officer, and master of combined land-sea operations. Tallmadge fought in the battles of Long Island, White Plains, and Germantown, and defended the Patriot population in the no-man's-land of Westchester County against British and Tory raiders. After Washington rewarded him with his own legion, he unleashed bold raids on British-occupied Long Island from his bases in Connecticut. All the while, he ran Washington's most active espionage ring in New York and Long Island. Reversing roles, he played a key role in foiling Benedict Arnold's plot to betray the American stronghold of West Point to the British. Tallmadge's Revolutionary service graphically illuminates the struggle in the region that witnessed the most continuous, relentless, often pitiless, fighting of the struggle. In particular, this book describes the internecine quality of the fighting in politically-divided Long Island and Westchester, and details how the struggle continued without let-up even after Yorktown. Though Tallmadge's fascinating post-war career receives careful attention, the book focuses on his Revolutionary War service.

During the summer of 1781, the armies of Generals Washington and Rochambeau were encamped in lower Westchester County at Dobbs Ferry, Ardsley, Hartsdale, Edgemont and White Plains. It was a time of military deadlock and grim prospects for the allied Americans and French. Washington recognized that a decisive victory was needed or America would never achieve independence. In August, he marched these soldiers to Virginia to face General Cornwallis and his redcoats. Washington risked all on this march. Its success required secrecy, and he prepared an elaborate deception to convince the British that Manhattan, not Virginia, was the target of the allied armies. Local historian Richard Borkow presents this exciting story of the Westchester encampment and Washington's great gamble that saved the United States.
George Washington had contact with Native Americans throughout most of his life. His first encounter as a teenager left him with the impression that they were nothing more than an "ignorant people." As a young man he fought both alongside and against Native Americans during the French and Indian War and gained a grudging respect for their fighting abilities. During the American Revolution, Washington made it clear that he welcomed Indian allies as friends but would do his utmost to crush Indian enemies. As president, he sought to implement a program to "civilize" Native Americans by teaching them methods of agriculture and providing the implements of husbandry that would enable them to become proficient farmers--the only way, he believed, Native Americans would survive in a white-dominated society. Yet he discovered that his government could not protect Indian lands as guaranteed in countless treaties, and the hunger for Indian land by white settlers was so rapacious that it could not be controlled by an inadequate federal military establishment. While Washington appeared to admit the failure of the program, this book--a unique and necessary exploration of Washington's experience with and thoughts on Native Americans--contends he deserves credit for his continued efforts to implement a policy based on the just treatment of America's indigenous peoples. Even today, he still stands guard over Boston, watching all who approach the "cradle of the Revolution" by way of Huntingdon Avenue. His visage remains as strong and determined in bronze as it was in real-life flesh and blood. John Glover has been at this post since 1828, when a grateful Commonwealth of Massachusetts erected this statue to honor the general from Marblehead and his men who time and time again saved the American Revolution from total and final defeat. A true son of Massachusetts, John Glover impressed George Washington at first sight, and the General continued to call on him for special service throughout the war. Glover developed the first American navy early in the conflict, and his ship Hannah was the first armed vessel to fly American colors. Glover and his men saved Washington, the entire army and the Revolution itself at the battles of Brooklyn and Pell's Point on Long Island. Then, on a cold and wintry night in December of 1776, the "web-footed warriors" from Marblehead rowed the army across the ice-choked Delaware River to Trenton where Washington won his most famous and his most needed victory. This book, based on letters, diaries, memoirs and contemporary papers, makes note that Glover was many things to many people and also had his set of demons to fight. And it shows that John Glover was, as the statue noted, at his best as "a soldier of the Revolution." Several photographs and an index to full-names, places and subjects add to the value of this work.
