Vapaa Taidekoulu perustettiin vuonna 1935 Maire Gullichsenin aloitteesta. Koulussa opetettiin aluksi ranskalaisen modernin maalaustaiteen periaatteita ja värimaalausta. Se muistutti Pariisin kaikille avoimia vapaita taideakatemioita ja tarjosi vaihtoehdon Suomen akateemiselle taideopetukselle. 1950-luvulla Vapaan Taidekoulun opettajat ja oppilaat keskittyivät konkretismiin Unto Pusan ja Sam Vannin johdolla. 1970-luvulla opetuksessa painottuivat puhdas abstrakti värimaalaus, Josef Albersin värioppi sekä koulun opettajien Tor Arnen ja Carolus Enckellin kautta tulleet amerikkalaisen maalaustaiteen vaikutteet. 1990-luvun lopulla alkoi matka kohti nykyhetken maalauksen moninaisuutta. Nykyään koulun tärkein pedagoginen periaate on taiteellisen ilmaisun vapaus ja maalauksen käytäntöjen opetus. Vapaan Taidekoulun opettajina ovat toimineet lukuisat merkittävät taiteilijat, kuten William Lönnberg, Sigrid Schauman, Unto Pusa ja Sam Vanni. Koulussa ovat opiskelleet muiden muassa Tove Jansson, Tor Arne, Carolus Enckell ja Rafael Wardi. Koulun rehtorina toimii nykyisin Elina Merenmies. Vapaa Taidekoulu on ainutlaatuinen ilmiö suomalaisessa taidehistoriassa ja merkittävä vaikuttaja Suomen taide-elämässä. I slutet av 1990-talet inleddes resan mot mångfalden i dagens måleri. Idag är skolans viktigaste pedagogiska grundsats frihet för konstnärliga uttryck och undervisning i måleriets principer. Flera av skolans lärare har varit ansedda konstnärer såsom William Lönnberg, Sigrid Schauman, Unto Pusa och Sam Vanni. It demonstrates the pervasive nature of storytelling and considers narratives as a means of causal explanation in the human sciences.By introducing four classic literary plot structures with their respective characters, events, moods and denouements, the book divides IR literature into tragedies, romances/epics, comedies and ironic/satirical stories. For each plot type, its characteristic features, logic and appeal are first reprised through some well-known prose examples before being employed in the analysis of major IR texts. King Lear, for example, helps bring out the tragic logic of Politics among Nations, and Sleeping Beauty demonstrates the romantic appeal inherent in The End of History. Twelfth Night is used to approach The Transformation of Political Community as a comedy, and A Modest Proposal paves the way for the examination of Bananas, Beaches and Bases as irony/satire. Rather than assess the absolute merits and shortcomings of the competing theories, the book discusses the relative strengths and weaknesses of stories that adhere to different plots in giving meaning to actors and events in the international arena.Discussing a broad range of theories, this text will be of interest to scholars and students of International Relations and World Politics, including various subcommunities such as specialists in peace research and Feminist IR.
The use of new information and communication technologies both inside the courts and in private online dispute resolution services is quickly changing everyday conflict management. However, the implications of the increasingly disruptive role of technology in dispute resolution remain largely undiscussed. In this book, assistant professor of law and digitalisation Riikka Koulu examines the multifaceted phenomenon of dispute resolution technology, focusing specifically on private enforcement, which modern technology enables on an unforeseen scale. The increase in private enforcement confounds legal structures and challenges the nation-state’s monopoly on violence. And, in this respect, the author argues that the technology-driven privatisation of enforcement – from direct enforcement of e-commerce platforms to self-executing smart contracts in the blockchain – brings the ethics of law’s coercive nature out into the open. This development constitutes a new, and dangerous, grey area of conflict management, which calls for transparency and public debate on the ethical implications of dispute resolution technology.

This book examines how the thinking towards international relations of political leaders, researchers, the media and the public is fundamentally metaphorical in nature: the abstract and far away constantly made concrete and familiar through the imaginative rationality of metaphors. It delves into ten competing structural metaphors: international relations as natural selection, as family dynamics, as balancing operations, as building and constructing, as games and play, as business and trade, as journeys and paths, as musical performances, as health or sickness and as puzzles and riddles. Drawing attention to the important role of metaphors in grasping this field and providing explanations for its events and motives for its actors, this study will appeal to scholars and students of International Relations and World Politics. This book explores the judicial treatment of suicides in early modern Sweden, with a focus on the criminal investigation and selective treatment of suicides in the lower courts in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Riikka Miettinen shows that reactions and attitudes towards suicides varied considerably despite harsh condemnation by officials. The indictment, investigation, and classification of suspected suicides and the mental state of a person already deceased were challenging, and depended on local co-operation and lay testimonies. Not all suicides were considered alike; a widespread view on the heinousness of suicide was not the same as agreement about specific cases, and did not result in uniform handling of them. The social status and local ties of the deceased influenced the interpretations and responses at the local lower courts and communities. Esteemed local community members had a better defence and greater chance to escape the shameful penalties.

This book takes a fresh perspective to acquisition research, focusing on employee emotions. It builds on the human-centric approach to mergers and acquisitions, where previous literature has concluded that emotions are important, yet few studies have explored them in depth. To fill the gap, this book takes emotion research in organizations as its starting point, exploring what emotions are, how they emerge, and how they influence organizational contexts, such as acquisitions. Whereas previous acquisition literature has concluded that emotions are most often negative and lead to complications, this book shows how emotions can become a positive force driving post-acquisition change and unification.
