Suspicious Circumstances: An Album of Events and Oddities with Thoughts on the Word What
In this deliciously delightful and amusing new work, world-traveller, writer A. Robert Lee masters a surprising form: the weird-essay-vignette. In a series of random, yet suspiciously linked, encyclopaedia-like entries, he revisits the bizarre, the banal, and the absurd behaviours, events, and trivia that fuse to create a life – from sexing ostriches, to giant fake teeth, to the meaning of meaning. For readers who love informative comedy, or armchair philosophers who find flipping through dictionaries a serendipitous hoot, this will be a book never to forget, and always to return to.

The wealth and breadth of literature produced by African Americans is staggering and dates to the earliest days of black presence in the United States. A. Robert Lee's Designs of Blackness takes on the critical and expansive task of mapping the traditions that influenced African American writing composed between 1746 and the present, in the process addressing the work of more than one hundred and fifty authors. Lee discusses writers like Phyllis Wheatley, Frederick Douglass, and Toni Morrison who have published books of poetry, history, and fiction, but he also considers works from oral and vernacular genres, including the speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the blues songs of Bessie Smith. Through this broad lens, Lee comments on significant moments in African American history and thought, as well as the threads that link these figures. Newly updated in this twentieth-anniversary edition, Designs of Blackness is a monument to the incredible creative force of literature by African Americans, and an invaluable tool to anyone interested in American culture and history.

A major reassessment of Hawthorne. The great novels are re-evaluated, as are the stories, and attention is paid to Hawthorne's use of the American past, of Nature, and to his understanding of the newly emerging American history and culture and his place within the context of European literature.

"He has a very high and noble nature, and [is] better worth immortality than most of us"óso Hawthorne wrote of Herman Melville in his journal for 1856. This collection of essays undertakes to re-examine the "nobility" of Melville's powerful and engaging imagination. Not only are his primary motifs of "the journey" and the quest for Truth given attention, but also his subtleties as a great maker of fiction are analysed. Hence the collection as a whole stresses Melville's way with language and irony and his serious, inventive playfulness as a writer.

Searching for the 17th Century on Nevis: The Survey and Excavation of Two Early Plantation Sites
Searching for the 17th Century on Nevis is the first of a series of monographs dedicated to the archaeological investigation of the landscape, buildings and artefacts of the Eastern Caribbean by the Nevis Heritage Project. This volume presents the results of documentary research and excavation on two sugar plantation sites on the island of Nevis. Upper Rawlins, located high on Nevis mountain, was occupied in the late 17th and early 18th century and abandoned early. Fenton Hill was occupied from the mid-17th to the mid-19th century and originated with an earthfast timber building, probably a dwelling house, later converted to a kitchen and encapsulated in stone about 1700. The adjacent main house was probably destroyed in the French raid of 1706 and rebuilt in timber. The final occupation was by Portuguese Madeiran labourers, who were introduced to fill a labour force shortage in the 1840s. Detailed reports on the finds assemblage include discussions of the handmade, bonfired Afro-Caribbean pottery made by enslaved African women, imported European ceramics and glass, clay tobacco pipes, metalwork and building materials. The dominance of imported goods from south-western England demonstrates the strong mercantile links between Nevis and Bristol, but local Nevis production of ceramics adds new insights into the estatebased ceramic production on European lines.

Biochemistry and Structure of Cell Organelles

THIS BOOK HAS BEEN WRITTEN BECAUSE WE FEEL THAT THERE IS A NEED FOR AN up-to-date compact book on cell organelles that transmits the excitement and challenge of modern subcellular biology. We hope that the book will be interesting and useful to students of the biological sciences and medicine, and to those in the teaching professions who do not have ready access to research papers. Since space is at a premium, we have denied ourselves the luxury of a philosophical discussion of the problems of defining organelles. Rather we have chosen to include all those intracellular structures which have limiting membranes and definable compartments. The separate chapters consider nuclei, plastids, mitochondria, microbodies, endoplasmic and sarcoplasmic reticulum, Golgi bodies, lysosomes and various secretory vesicles, including chromaffin granules and synaptic vesicles. Nucleoli, ribosomes, and centrioles are included in the chapter on nuclei. New and exciting information about all these structures has emerged in recent years-for example, the nucleosome, interrupted genes, signal sequences on proteins destined for the bioenergetic organelles, mapping and sequencing of organelle genes, and consolidation of chemiosmosis as a unifying principle in energy transduction. We have outlined as many of these developments as possible and pointed out some areas of controversy. The literature on subcellular biology is so extensive that it would have been easier to have written a separate book on each organelle.

We live in a world facing many crises, pandemics, climate and environmental challenges, human rights abuses, and threats of totalitarian regimes. Romano Guardini (1885-1968), a major influencer of Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis, worked through one of the most difficult periods of German history--the first half of the twentieth century. What does he have to say to these challenges, and how is his notion of providence relevant today? Jane Lee-Barker shows how Guardini's insight and deep thought on God's providence weave their way through his work, enabling the reader to fully appreciate "God's world." In relationship with God, the human person is invited to participate in responsible care for the world while responding to their own vocational call from the God who sustains him or her.

Gas Reservoir Engineering provides the undergraduate as well as the graduate student with an introduction to fundamental problem solving in gas reservoir engineering through practical equations and methods. Although much oil well technology applies to gas wells, many differences exist. This book helps students understand and recognize these differences to enable appropriate handling of gas reservoir problems. Natural gas production has become increasingly important in the U.S., and the wellhead revenue generated from it is now greater than the wellhead revenue generated from oil production. Because this trend eventually will be followed worldwide, we feel that it is important to emphasize gas reservoir engineering courses at the undergraduate level and to have a textbook devoted to this purpose. This book also serves as an introduction to gas reservoir engineering for graduate students and practicing petroleum engineers. Although much of the technology for oil wells applies to gas wells, there are still many differences. It is important to learn these differences and to have a good, fundamental background in how to recognize and handle them. We have tried to provide practical equations and methods while emphasizing the fundamentals on which they are based. We have not attempted to be complete in the sense of presenting the best-known solution(s) to all problems in this area of technology. In many cases, we didn't even present the problem, much less a solution. Instead, we concentrated on fundamentals and hope to have made the literature in gas reservoir engineering more accessible both now and in the future. If you don't find your favorite topic in the table of contents or in the index, it simply didn't make our short list of fundamentals that we believed to be key parts of the literature.
General Lee: A Biography of Robert E. Lee

General Lee: A Biography of Robert E. Lee

One of the most famous generals in American history is one that fought against the Union during the Civil War. Robert E. Lee is still remembered and even praised even though he led the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia against the Union for about 3 years of the war. Lee is celebrated for giving the Union Army of the Potomac trouble for most of the war, forcing Lincoln to fire several generals and defending Richmond until April 1865. As a result, the South loved him, and even today many Southerners look at him as the perfect leader. However, Lee wasn't perfect, as evidenced by his defeat at Gettysburg. And ultimately, he wasn't working with enough to win the war; both of his invasions of the North ended with strategic defeats, including at Antietam. Despite his defeats, Lee was revered by Confederate veterans, and this biography was written by his nephew Fitzhugh, who was a cavalry officer in Lee's army for much of the war. Naturally, Fitz Lee defends his uncle against most of the perceived criticisms.

A WALL STREET JOURNAL BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR - From the award-winning historian and best-selling author of Gettysburg comes the definitive biography of Robert E. Lee. An intimate look at the Confederate general in all his complexity--his hypocrisy and courage, his inner turmoil and outward calm, his disloyalty and his honor. "An important contribution to reconciling the myths with the facts." --New York Times Book Review Robert E. Lee is one of the most confounding figures in American history. Lee betrayed his nation in order to defend his home state and uphold the slave system he claimed to oppose. He was a traitor to the country he swore to serve as an Army officer, and yet he was admired even by his enemies for his composure and leadership. He considered slavery immoral, but benefited from inherited slaves and fought to defend the institution. And behind his genteel demeanor and perfectionism lurked the insecurities of a man haunted by the legacy of a father who stained the family name by declaring bankruptcy and who disappeared when Robert was just six years old. In Robert E. Lee, the award-winning historian Allen Guelzo has written the definitive biography of the general, following him from his refined upbringing in Virginia high society, to his long career in the U.S. Army, his agonized decision to side with Virginia when it seceded from the Union, and his leadership during the Civil War. Above all, Guelzo captures Robert E. Lee in all his complexity--his hypocrisy and courage, his outward calm and inner turmoil, his honor and his disloyalty.
