A World Trading System for the Twenty-First Century
When designing a world trading system for the twenty-first century, "Keep calm and carry on" beats "Move fast and break things." Global trade is in trouble. Climate change, digital trade, offshoring, the rise of emerging markets led by China: Can the World Trade Organization (WTO), built for trade in the twentieth century, meet the challenges of the twenty-first? The answer is yes, Robert Staiger tells us, arguing that adapting the WTO to the changed economic environment would serve the world better than a radical reset. Governed by the WTO, on the principles of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), global trade rules traditionally focus on "shallow integration"--with an emphasis on reducing tariffs and trade impediments at the border--rather than "deep integration," or direct negotiations over behind-the-border measures. Staiger charts the economic environment that gave rise to the former approach, explains when and why it worked, and surveys the changing landscape for global trade. In his analysis, the terms-of-trade theory of trade agreements provides a compelling framework for understanding the success of GATT in the twentieth century. And according to this understanding, Staiger concludes, the logic of GATT's design transcends many, if not all, of the current challenges faced by the WTO. With its penetrating view of the evolving global economic environment, A World Trading System for the Twenty-First Century shows us a global trading system in need of reform, and Staiger makes a persuasive case for using the architecture of the GATT/WTO as a basis for that reform.

A Japanese Approach to Stages of Capitalist Development
This book uses the levels of analysis approach first developed by Japanese political economist Kozo Uno to theorize stages of capitalist development. Stage theory is understood as a mid-range theory informed both by the theory of a purely capitalist society and by historical analysis. The four stages of mercantilism, liberalism, imperialism, and consumerism are theorized according to an abstract type of capital accumulation, which is understood broadly to include mutually supporting economic, ideological, legal, and political practices.

This book offers a novel treatment of one of the most important and long-standing research agendas in critical political economy: the theorizing of stages of capitalist development. Albritton advances the work of Japanese economist, Kozo Uno, to explore capital accumulation and its ideological, legal and political supports, not only in the stages of mercantilism, liberalism and imperialism, but also in the post-World War II capitalist stage of consumerism. The power of Albritton’s adoption of this Japanese approach resides in the crisp clarity it achieves over the way stage theorizing of capitalism draws on both economic theory and historical analysis. In the new, fully revised edition, written with Richard Westra, two new chapters are added. One meticulously examines the tendencies of capitalism euphemized as globalization and financialization which followed the crisis of the stage of consumerism. The other deals with current threats to civilization posed by burgeoning militarism, environmental destruction and climate apocalypse. The concluding chapter argues for the necessity of major social change to ensure a liveable future for humanity. The book will be of interest to researchers and students of political economy and the history of economic thought, as well as a wider audience interested in the transformation and crises of capitalism.

Pool Stage: A Small Book of Poetry

What gives poetry its effect? Perhaps it is its foreignness to day to day living --- something apart from the travail of reality. Perhaps it is that poetry springs as much from the heart as from the mind. Whatever the reason, in poetry certain aspects of life and living gain a clarity and meaning not found in prose writing. In his work the "Apology" Plato attributes to Socrates the statement that "...the unexamined life is not worth living..." This small book of poetry tries to examine some of those aspects of life that makes it worth living.

After discussing the structuralism, post structuralism, Marxist, queer and feminist theories of dramatic action and dramaturgical development, the author posits an ontological (and refreshing)vision of Shakesprean stagecraft and dramatic movement. Skakespeare as an actor and Roman Catholic is an outsider in an early modern Protestant state in the process of dynamic cultural, economic reform and political repression. These themes are reflected in the unsettled, morally ambiguous characterizations that Professor Crosman studies: Hamlet, Polonius, McBeth, Henry V and Falstaff among others. Also discussed are the emergent Latin, Greek and Italian literary modes and their effect on English theatrical prosody.
Dark Sovereign, a New Version for the Stage: The Tragedy of King Richard III that Wm Shakespeare Should Have Written
The first edition of "Dark Sovereign" was privately published in 1991 and has no ISBN number. Edition 2, published in July 2011, comprises the full text with its complete 715-item glossary. This edition, No. 3, "Dark Sovereign, a New Version for the Stage" was published in January 2019. For the first time in four centuries a modern writer has challenged William Shakespeare by writing a full-length play in the Bard's Renaissance English-fluently. Shakespeare wrote "The Tragedy of Richard the Third" as Tudor propaganda for the Court of Queen Elizabeth I, portraying King Richard III as a sociopath and a killer. Author Robert Fripp, formerly the series producer of CBC-TV's long-running investigative "The Fifth Estate" series, took four years to pen his modern, revised view of Richard III. Fripp's "Dark Sovereign" tells the real, the historical tale of Richard's troubled reign. "At last " comments New York director Nathaniel Merchant. "Here is the antidote to the scurrilous but seductive play by Shakespeare. Fripp shocks with his skillful and uncanny use of verse and his portrait of Richard as a man, not a caricature or stock villain." Says the author, "It's not wildly revisionist. Just wildly different. 'Dark Sovereign' seldom gives King Richard's character more benefit of the doubt than reliable histories do. 'Dark Sovereign' is no whitewash. It runs close to a view long-held in England's northern counties: that Richard was a benign, capable ruler. He was caught between a rock and a hard place in a smouldering civil war, England's Wars of the Roses. 'Dark Sovereign' dramatizes the snake-pit of that conflict with a human, not a demonic, face. It's a stronger story without Shakespeare's character assassination.' So, why put the word "Dark" in the title? 'The word carries the sixteenth century sense you find in dark horse and dark star, ' says Fripp. 'It suggests a quality unknown; and that is certainly true of Richard III, smeared with his enemy's propaganda through four centuries.' Art historian Claude Marks, a lecturer at New York's Metropolitan Museum, called "Dark Sovereign" 'a cultural accomplishment of the highest order.' No wonder Samuel Liff, Senior Theatrical Agent at the William Morris Agency, described "Dark Sovereign" to the author's agent, Jennifer Watts, as 'The most courageous thing I ever saw in theater. A good play, too.' 'Many authors, including Shakespeare, Francis Bacon and the six teams of scholars who produced the King James Bible in 1611, were writing in what we call the Golden Age of the English language, ' says Fripp. 'It's a beautiful language. It's yours and it's mine.' The author should know. As a boy, Fripp won a choral scholarship to Salisbury Cathedral choir where he recited, chanted and sang early modern English for five years.
