The Rise of Amphibians

The Rise of Amphibians

Robert Carroll

Johns Hopkins University Press
2009
sidottu
For nearly 100 million years, amphibians and their ancestors dominated the terrestrial and shallow water environments of the earth. Archaic animals with an amphibious way of life gave rise not only to modern frogs, salamanders, and caecilians but also to the ancestors of reptiles, birds, and mammals. In this landmark publication, one of the leading paleontologists of our time explores a pivotal moment in vertebrate evolution, the rise of amphibians. Synthesizing findings from the rich and highly diverse fossil record of amphibians, Robert Carroll traces their origin back 365 million years, when particular species of fish traveled down an evolutionary pathway of fin modification that gave rise to legs. This period of dramatic radiation was followed by a cataclysmic extinction 250 million years ago. After a long gap, modern amphibian groups gradually emerged. Now the number of amphibian species and individuals throughout the tropical and temperate regions of the earth exceeds that of mammals. The Rise of Amphibians is documented with more than two hundred illustrations of fossil amphibians and sixteen exquisite color plates depicting amphibians in their natural habitats throughout their long existence. The most comprehensive examination of amphibian evolution ever produced, The Rise of Amphibians is an essential resource for paleontologists, herpetologists, geologists, and evolutionary biologists.

Mysteries and Science is for kids 9 and up. It takes a look at weird things from abracadabra to zombies. What does science have to say about things like astrology, Bigfoot, dowsing, ESP, ghosts, and monsters? These and other similar topics are covered here, including predictions of the end of the world, palm reading, and vampires. In all, Science and Mysteries takes you on a journey through fifty chapters. Some chapters deal with weird things, some deal with how scientists think and what kinds of tools they use to investigate things. We may not always agree with scientists, but they make us think. And thinking is always a good thing.

'Know Thyself' advised the ancient Greek sages who defined us as rational animals. Rationality, they thought, could be achieved by controlling the emotions and avoiding logical fallacies. We now know that the brain is a great deceiver. Unconscious biases drive us to believe and do things that the conscious mind explains in self-serving stories, making us appear more rational to ourselves than we really are. Modern science has taught us that rationality involves much more than just controlling the emotions and avoiding fallacies. Today's rational animal-what we call the critical thinker-must understand the unconscious biases that are directing many of our most important judgments and decisions. The Critical Thinker's Dictionary explores the insights of ancient and modern philosophers along with the latest findings in such fields as neuroscience and behavioral economics to lay out the many obstacles and snares that await anyone committed to a rational life.

The main theme of the book is to relate ideas of quantum fluctuations (expressed via Fisher information for example, or diffusion processes, or fractal structures, or particle creation and annihilation, or whatever) in terms of the so called quantum potential (which arises most conspicuously in deBroglie-Bohm theories).

Ike's "Go-To Guy"...the life story of Paul T. Carroll, told in loving memory by his son, Bob Carroll. The text is brought to life by scores of family photographs, personal stories, letters, telegrams, newspaper and magazine articles, and historic papers and diaries dating from the early 1900s through the WWII era and beyond. Paul Carroll progressed from West Point to Army assignments across the United States, to Iceland, and through France. He fought in Patton's Third Army, earning the Combat Infantryman Badge, two Silver Stars, two Bronze Stars, and the Legion of Merit. He was truly an outstanding combat commander, highly respected by his commanders, fellow officers, and troops.Later in the Pentagon, Lieutenant Colonel Carroll worked for three successive Army Chiefs of Staff: Marshall, Eisenhower, and Bradley. It was while he was working for General of the Army Eisenhower for over two years that Paul developed a unique relationship of mutual respect and trust. This bond led Eisenhower, after he left the Pentagon, to call on Carroll for assistance. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Carroll became Ike's "Go-to Guy" to put together the core team in Paris for NATO's military headquarters; to plan, organize, and run President-elect Eisenhower's trip to Korea; to organize the White House staff; and to serve as the first Secretary of the White House Staff. Not long after Carroll was promoted to Brigadier General, he tragically died of a heart attack at age 44, leaving behind his beloved wife, Ruth, and sons Peter, 16, Bobby, 14, and David, 8.This book is a well-documented account of Carroll as Eisenhower's "Go-to Guy" and also is the story of his family, a life story that is both historical and poignant.
